Pompey vs. West Ham

Pompey v Irons

Pompey entertain West ham at Fratton, just a month after a demoralising defeat in the reverse fixture, revenge will no doubt be on our minds.

Vital Quotes:

Pompey are on the crest of a wave, well more a ripple really after first turning over Sunderland and then getting the draw we wanted for the 5th round, joy is not a word commonly associated with anything Pompey these days, but I was punching the air last night I can tell you!

Avram Grant is keeping a low profile as far as the press are concerned, he is no doubt as sick of the off-field dramas as the rest of us.
Paul Groves seems to be our spokesman now and he said 'Wins breed confidence and any win in any cup can give us a springboard and something we can build on.

'They're all big games - especially the home games and especially the ones against the teams in and around us.

'But this is one we can look forward to on the back of a result and performance like the one we had on Saturday.''

Pompey Team News:

Pompey have struggled to fill the bench in recent games, Diop and Brown have both managed to pick up injuries at the weekend and the problem may be worse, Finnan and Smith are both training again though.
David James and David Nugent both remain Pompey players, but both are hankering for action elsewhere so won't figure, Nugent's loan is not officially complete until midnight Tuesday anyway.

The side is going to look very much like it did on Saturday, Utaka has earned his place, while Basinas must be banging the door down, Mullins stands by.

Player to watch: Utaka

John is finally finding his form after a two year sabatical, if he can keep it up we may have a real asset, he needs to justify his 30k wages somehow!

West Ham Team News:

Carlton Cole is on the cusp of rejoining the starting eleven, he may have to make do with a bench spot though.
Perma-injured Dyer is joined by Gabbidon on the sidelines.
Zola can enjoy moving from looking over his shoulder for players moving on to the luxury of a bit of financial stability.

Player to watch: Green

May seem an obvious one, but he is the man we have to beat.

Match Facts & Stats

A 4-1 reverse last season was the start of the end for Tony Adams tenure, but at least Bellamy has moved on!

trip to Fulham will be your hardest fixture!
Utaka on 30k a week! and the rest. Lets hope he can keep up his form and start earning it. If he carries on like he has been I think he's the missing forward we've been looking for. I've always supported him as a player because it's only now he's been played upfront where he's at his best so we should see the best of him. People have to remember the majority of his pompey career has been under Redknapp who never played him upfront or even gave him a chance there. PUP!
Oh c'mon Putney - harder than away to Man City on their current form? I think not. Anyway this is about tomorrow night's game - I'm looking forward to it, I think we can get something tomorrow, we've been on fine form despite everything that's been going on. And we MUST get three points!
ytact, it is a must get, sadly though, i just cant see it.
plymouth graham
Alan shoorking difeendin Hansen tips us for a shooork win tomorrow. Here's hoping!
BEGOVIC,BORRE,wilson,KABOUL,HERMINATOR,BASINAS,MOKOEnA, MULLINS,PRINCE,FREDDY,UTAKA. God help us with that lineup but its all we have . . . .. maybe we can play wilson in centre midfield. . . . .
moley2: Utaka is on 80k (at the most) a week according to other sources...
At least those wages show the SUPREME financial position of POMPEY, am I right!?
I know Lysimachus, thats why I said and the rest. Your dead right though, it's the reason were in complete s**t paying ridiculous wages like that!
A win and we'll be one win from 15th spot :-)
30k is nearer than 80k, that is tabloid talk
The 80k is supposedly an over exageration according to the journo on the quay; so 79,999.99 then. Don't count on kaboul according to the journo on the quay, Pompey trying to make a bidding war between spurs and citeh, the mancs having the upper hand cos Kaboul hates Levy
fingers crossed for the win!!!!!! PUP
Have people heard the latest... Not sure how true but check it out...potential new saviour....
Hey Dazza,I saw this article too then checked him out on wikki...interesting newa feed,
plymouth graham
Yeh I checked him out on Wiki also. It's funny that in the article this morning it talks about his footballing career at Udinese and Sampdoria. Then you read on on the Wiki page and see he only ever played 10 mins of a match for Udinese & never featured for Sampdoria. Was interesting that himself and the Libyan Government wanted to create a semi-autonomous city similar to Hong Kong in Libya. Anyway Graham, how are you? Still see much of Jeff?
I can confirm what Paul says Utaka is on nearer 30k! Still a sackload though!
What's wrong with Ben Haim? Is he injured?
Pompey Malta
Any one around this evening?
Corny here Penton...... up for a win tonight.....
Hello mate, sorry been trying to get iraqi goals to work...and at long last! No mate sorry, i reckon 0-2, esp as ive just seen us line up narrow AGAIN!
Why when it's been proved lately we dont have the players to play narrow, does AV insist on starting every game like it?
Basinas is playing though...lets hope he can spray those passes.
He just did a 5yd one that gave them a pop at goal haha
Back to good old Quay...just lost the tv again!
Slack start by the sound of it..
Went back to the quay...and yet again 10 mins behind!!!! Whats that all about?
Sorry about this Corny, im more disjointed tonight than a Russian gymnast
Close one... Penton, use the quay on the PFC delay.
Hey Corny, my eldest has just got accepted by Exeter Uni, got to take him down on the 10th, thats down your way mate isn't it?
Good old Bego......close one....phew!!
Jeez this game's livened up!
About 100 miles from Exeter.... Your right there Penton, a couple of minutes of madness...
Evening Penton and Corny. Was watching on the Iraq page but it's dropped out. Good luck to your eldest Penton - now your expenses start in earnest.
First goal is vital, who ever gets it, wins it me thinks
Utaka on left wingm strange 4-3-2-1 formation with no width and plenty of room for Noble in midfield. Lets hope Avram changes it again at half time!
Do hope he sticks it out....My daughter started Bath Spa in September and jacked it in in December......homesick! Evening Blue.....PUP.
Yep..we've got to get some width in this game..
Lets hear it for Begovic guys!
Hiya Blue, you had the same trouble as me I see! Yeah your not kidding! luckily enough he has a Fairy God Father (Meant in the good way) Who makes sure he gets help (Not all; but a definite help!) Sports Science for the lad, he wants to run his own gym in Florida. Hey I said; whats wrong with being a decorator in Hampshire? Haha
Evening Vecccio
Hi Penton, hope you are ok?
Sounds as flat as Kate moss's chest
4-4-2 pkease second half Avram! Ritchie on for Mokoena on left wing.
I'm fine Vecccio thanks. Wish AV would get into his head we need width!
Get off Finnan. Bring on Vanden Borre
Spot on Vecccio, we need that avenue to go explore
hope ritchie does get on today for his debut .. when was the last time we had some play for us who lived in pompey? nightingALE??
Bolton 1 up, Wolves 0-0. We need Burnley to equalise and the Scouse Bankrupts to grab a winner!
Well not just live was born
Definitely need a change for the 2nd half, we're getting nowhere trying to go through the middle of the park.....come on Avram sort it.
Evening Hussler, It would be nice, but can't imagine The staid man gambling like that do you?
Lets get it wide and use Utaka's pace. Seems every time he has the ball the crowd pick up a decibel!
Oh for *****5 sake! here we go again!
Well done Avram! CHANGE IT YOU FOOL!!!!!!!!!
We're gonna get whooped if this poop carries on!!
come on pompey borre or ritchie on and 4-4-2
Over the feckin bar....geeezzzzzzz
OOOOOh Wilson you wonker!!!
If it wasn't for Beggo' we'd be buried!!
VDB.....about bloody time
Your dead right there Penton....
Dear oh dear! we've lost 7 out of 10 home games this season, make that 8 and we're done!, 6pts adrift and floundering
With all the crap that's been happening for the last 18 months or so, isn't it lucky we have got Beggo?
Bloody we go again...miss....miss....friggin ...miss
Sod it I'm gonna have a lump of Ginger Cake....
Flippin heck Corny! don't be ashamed go for it....
Sorry but Grant is to blame for this, he should have started with a more attacking formation. 1 up front at home. COME ON????
Webber you beauty!!!!!!!
GOAL, Kaboul, what an strike that was.
Vecccio, he put out sides like that in the Cup as well...Change it and all's a no brainer!
Come on Pompey.....we can win this. Webber eh, another please.
Well done John Utaka and well done Webber
I know penton, big gamble though. Could have been 3-0 West Ham at half time.
Just when is AV gonna realise we need a different line up from the start, not give the players only 45 minutes to save a game!?
Who knows. Bloody amateurish.
I know I was a PH supporter but everyone said AG had better tactical nous. Nearly Utaka!
Avram, this is down to you!!!!!!!!
The difference between Harry and other Managers is; Harry more often than not took the game to the opposition at home, he didn't sit back and wait to see what happened!
Search me....I just don't understand why we start with this negative stuff, and need to be under the cosh before we change it. At bloody home as well....
well done Danny! I really thought we would take all 3 points when the official said 4 minutes remaining. oh well, draws still ok
bego was motm for me =) he could be the saviour of the relegation battle. a win and technically 2 pts from safety! its a big if though!
could of done with a win but a draw was good with the players we had for selection ... we should be much stronger when we get everyone back and a few in and of course ohara back .... he was an unused sub for spurs today...
Absolutely rudderless. Mokoena, Mullins and Basinas aren't worth half a Diarra, or Sean Davis for that matter. Difficult to see what else Avram could do with the team, he put faith in the system that worked against Sunderland and it didn't really work here. You could argue that we've got nothing to lose but when you're in the situation we're in I guess you set the team up for damage limitation. However, that isn't the way we want our teams set up, we want to see some fight.
i'm sorry i've just got in from the match and i have NO idea what any of you are complaining about re Avram, we we're playing with what we had and from where i was sitting we were playing a 4-4-2 with utaka and piq up front or at least with utaka just behind, i do agree he should have put borre on from the start though but it was a good game and if you look at the stats we where the best team on the night. and if we had diop and brown i think we would have had West ham easy, and lets face it their goal was lucky as **** anyway!
