Pompey vs. Arsenal

Pompey Gunner survive?

Pompey come to their ultimate game at the end of their annus horriblus, good old Arsenal face us, a team we have yet to beat in the Premiership, and also a team pushing hard for a title shot.

Vital Quotes:

All the build up to the match has centred around the usual financial constraits surrounding our terminally club. This week sees news claiming players won't be paid once more, the departure of James/Begovic/Belhadj/Kaboul and Dindane, with an embargo still in place, Paul Groves may have to lace up!!

Avram Grant has spoken of his desire for Pompey to 'get nasty', we have the players to do this in Brown of course, but what he really wants is a dogs of war mentally throughout the side I think.

Pompey Team News:

O'Hara is a big blow, his 5th card of the season rules him out, luckily Yebda is around for one more game before his African adventure, he, along with Belhadj and Kanu should be up for selection, while Begovic remains in goal in place of the, ahem, 'injured' David James.

Player to watch: Boateng

Buster could only play a cameo against West Ham, his arrival certainly lifted the side at half-time, he came closest to scoring and the energy levels soared.

Arsenal Team News:

Arsenal have major doubts over top man Fabregas, he scored twice aginst Villa in a half hour cameo.
Denilson is also a doubt, bur Rosicky may return.
Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Gael Clichy (back), Kieran Gibbs (foot), Robin van Persie (ankle) and Johan Djourou (knee) remain sidelined.

Player to watch: Arshavin

The Ukrainian takes on mantle as top man for this one, with van Persie and Fabregas the onus will be on the man who tore Pompey apart last season.

Match Facts & Stats

The closest we have come against arsenal was a disallowed Kranjcar goal on the last day of the season a couple of years back, Matt Taylor scored twice in December 2006 as we took a half time lead, otherwise besides a few notable acceptions we lose, in fact we haven't registered a win since 1958!

Ummm. Last season Arsenal fielded their reserves & we got stuffed 3-0. Sadly a draw maybe the best we can hope for. They do draw a few away from home against 'lesser' teams. We live in hope & yhere ain't much of that about!

Could be the last chance to see a few players in blue - It will be interesting to see who is pulled from the team for the cup tie, they won't want there assets cup tied. PUP

Arshavin is Russian not Ukranian...still one to watch though!
gun 'em down
I'm afraid after wasting another ton of money on an away day I've sought of started to lose faith in the club, I can't ( today anyway) even find it in me to waste a tenner on a Pompey win; We are going to get absoloutely Wengered
russellm
dead in the water...administration round the corner..fratton sold to developers
plymouth graham
haha i think that may be 1 of the best titles i've seen in quiet awhile :D

A draw would be a fantastic result! OK can't think of anything else even remotely positive to say. I just hope it's not too freezing cold tomorrow night.

"their annus horriblus" - and for the fans Paul. This year has been like my worst nightmare. It's been so unbelievable. If we lose to Arsenal, if we lose players, if the embargo remains - will AG stay? I don't know how the players are going to get themselves up for this game. I think the fans will play a big part but if it's quiet we'll be in for a pasting. PUP and let's end the year on a high note - you deserve it for all your effort (even though we've criticised various players) in what must be the worst footballing season any of you have experienced.
PFCblue
good luck lads - you might need it!

I live in hope of a draw, good luck to the good ship Pompey, and lets hope that 2010 see's some improvement. PUP !

i used to go and watch pompey during my time in the andrew, few pints at the old air balloon, then of to fratton, great times i find it so sad that pompey are in the position they are, all due to bad management and bad ownership, your club has a great history, and deserves better. i relly hope to see pompey around for many years , the league would be a sadder place without you all the best for the future
cornish gooner
Thanks for those words cg, but I hope we don't do you any favours tomorrow. After that I hope you go on to win the league. Arsenal have shown the world 'honest' football management.
PFCblue
Cheers cornish, many thanks!...Your right we do have a great history, it deserves so much more than the crap we're having to put up with!

I see we are now cast adrift at the bottom of the league and a loss to The Arse will confirm our loss of the Premiership franchise. If we are going to lose to the Sh1te we must beat teams like Arsenal. So, you lost to West Ham (who are Sh1te) so now go and beat The Arse. It's your fault so sort it out.

As pointed out, Arshavin is Russian, I read it & was horrified as if the Ukrainian future wifey was 2 see a Russian mistaken for Ukrainian, she would be far from impressed ha! As for our little one-dual British/Ukrainian nationality hey Uncle Rug & future Pompey with Reece lol! As for the football, not much to say really! However Jacob's is said to be optimistic about the financial future according to the Guardian...we will see!
dazza0410
DAZZA0410, sorry to dissapoint you but Jacobs bought HR's book on "How to twitch and tell lies at the same time" for Christmas. As for the Football it looks like thats all thats left. With 5 players off to ANC and no chance of the embargo being lifted, even that is looking dodgy. PS is also writing a book on "How to destroy a Football Club in 5 easy steps" don't think anyone will buy it though. Something that made me laugh on Sky, was Jamie R's slip on his post match analysis, when he said "we are trying to get Spurs to play expansive football" he then realised what he said and quickly added they are....! Not biased then Jamie!!!!!!!!!!

ITS JUST COME UP ON BBC SPORT "PORTSMOUTH FC ISSUED WITH WINDING UP PETITION".......
southportpompey
Already a thread on this sp. What a complete shambles we're in.
PFCblue
Winding up order issued on 23rd Dec. In court in Febuary. Well it had to happen didn't it. What a complete bunch of *ankers these new owners are. Sorry to say it again but it's all down to PS, he is the only bloke in the world who can find the worlds 2 poorest Arabs. Fakes not Sheikh's!!!
Mike1954
its just the start OTT wages for Players & Dumb transfer fees when will people ever learn Pompey wont be the last to suffer like this.Feel sorry for the true fans who will stick by the club.
dannybhoy46
Not a bad day at the office then a wind up order and a thrashing by Arsenal.
