Pompey v Liverpool

Two 'crisis' sides meet today, I tell you what though, these big boys don't know the meaning of the word! Sat in 6th with only champions league qualification to worry about, luxury.

Vital Quotes:

Pompey may well be up against an omnipotent force today, Carragher has had a few words with beardy about some divine intervention, hopefully Primus' chair is a bit nearer to the man though.

Pompey have the carrot of knowing that a win would drag us off the bottom for the first time since the summer at the expense of West Ham who don't play until Sunday, and we know the stat about who is bottom at Xmas goes down generally.

Pompey Team News:

Pompey will have Boateng and James available again after illness, while Yootha Kaboul has finished his ban.

Avram will know doubt tinker with the side after wednesday's match, Piquionne may have done enough to hold his spot, but will it be Dindane or Kanu to partner him in what will surely be a more attacking side?

Steve Finnan looks favourite for the right-back spot ahead of Ben-Haim.

Player to watch: Piquionne

A goal midweek will hopefully be the catalyst for a rich vein of form from the Frenchman.

Scousers Team News:

Carragher makes his 600th appearance for 'pool, while Torres will probably be taken out of cotton wool for this one.
Glen Johnson should be fit after a sore hamstring, he will no doubt get a very warm welcome after starring for us in recent years.

Player to watch: Johnson

Still our player of the year, Hreidarsson will have to be on his toes for his trickery.

Match Facts & Stats

A 3-2 defeat last year saw Tony Adams depart, maybe this year its our turn?

Ref Watch:

Silverton Hutchinson

id love a win more than most even if just to annoy my scouse mates :) but if Torres and Gerrard are both playing its a big ask! PUP!
southportpompey
C'mon paulsmouth, no sitting on the fence now!!! Hopefully the conditions will even it up. We must get amongst them, play ugly & upset them. I've had my bacon sandwiches (sorry Avram), wooly hat ready & off to the match I go. Play up Pompey.
storagematt
Big game for both teams... It'll be close but I feel we'll have a bit too much for Pompey!! (hopefully) ;)
Liverpool_lad
Being in our position we cannot sit back and hope for a draw. We should have a go at them, and hope we get the 3 points. They aren't playing any good at the moment. Come on Blues! It is gonna be interesting to see Johnson. I think we should play Belhadj instead of Hermann at left back; the lad has the pace one needs to stop Glen!
Pompey Malta
matt i don't think we'll have a problem playing ugly judging by the last couple of matches lol and liverpool lad i unfortunatly fer your right....
pompeym@
come on the win!
FootyFans
portsmouth 0-2 liverpool ... definitely a penalty in the game ... there i said it!
pompey--pessimist
Hmmmm... I think my earlier prediction may well and truly be wrong!!! FFS!!!
Liverpool_lad
well spurs 1st team beat em so hopefully our reserves can.!!
liamyid
Well done Pompey, you battled hard and took the chances that came your way!!!
Liverpool_lad
Well mates - thank good that he brings you Avram Grant for christmas - or should i say Hanukkah. WAY TO GO!!!
alonrose
*Thank god of course - but good fit well as well.
alonrose
2-0. What's refreshing is that Pompey didn't 'sit back'. They were attacking until the final whistle.
PFCblue
Too true Blue....wow! I'm so happy, would have given anything to be there today. Well done you Blues. Avrams choice of Belhadj to keep Johnson on the back foot was brilliant. Two fantastic goals too, God I can hardly contain myself......PUP.
cornypomp
cheers liverpool and alon, good game and not just cause we won tbh, it was end to end for the most and both teams had some excellent chances but for once our defence held firm lol. oh and blue and corny of course we where attacking till the end we had BELHADJ at friggin last what a difference 1 player can make, so much width and flair, and yedba was the same on the other side so, so happy to see, fantastic performance and brilliant result! just awesome. lol
pompeym@
alonrose: i figured i'd see you here...funny how you're not on the Chelsea site anymore...well, as a Chelsea supporter I'm following your rise out of relegation with a genuine sense of confusion and bewilderment. When Avram inherited the Chelsea squad during his tenure, it's easy to dismiss his success as par for the course, luck, whatever you wish to call it. At Pompey, it's simply not the same. Whatever Avram Grant is doing, he should keep it up. Great fighting spirit out there and two goals taken magnificently. Plus, I despise Liverpool and it's always fun to see them suffer. Best of luck.
RadioactiveD
OMG!!! How happy am I??? I am going to get well and truly in the festive spirit today...I can't believe it!! GET IN THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
pentonpompey
Radioactive: Avram Grant should have stay as chelsea manager. He took you to a new heights, that even mourinho failed to take you. and as the better side in the champ's final as well. not to mention that he came to chelsea when it spotted 6 or 7 in the table. the only problem of chelsea is it crowd, because the team and the players are very good, but the crowd is fashionable and after one lose, start to cry. That's why as a by stander i like liverpool's crowd the most, they are truly fans, either you like the pool or not. but i think that this game will make their nerves weaker.
alonrose
Well done the lads. I am ashamed to say that for the first time this year, I thought we would lose. Mind you, Belhadj is my favourite player - I did'nt know he was playing, now, did I? I thought the Fratton End were brilliant as usual. Finally, can't wait for the papers tomorrow who will say how badly Pool played rather than give us any credit for winning. Oh well - can't have it all, I suppose.
gandor1
Get in there! My first home game for five years and what a fizzer, loved the 'your getting sacked in the morning' chant, Torres was a real cry baby, because we hustled him out of just about everything, great fighting spirit, I was getting a little worried just near the end when we started to sit back a bit but all in all a fantastic game, cheers rug your a legend, ill see you before the game against the arse, maybe we can take a point from them huh!!! We dare to dream, now sort the frickin club out huh!!!!!
NZ_Portsmuff
Woo Hoo!
tracyc
The difference between Hart and Grant is really beginning to show now - Grant has tactical nouse that Hart could only dream of. I really believe we'll look back on this as the turning point in our season! Well done Pompey - they deserve their Xmas party (if they're having one?)
tracyc
I had reservations when we signed him but i thought brown was awesome today
Super Bock 1898
well done pompey a well deserved mid table scalp today

alonrose: your agenda on the Chelsea site was to praise Avram and to argue with anyone who didn't. I remember it well and found it repetitive and irritiating. Pompey fans, expect to see Alonrose do the same here. Not that your opinion of me, AR, is in the least bit significant to me or anyone else, but I've always maintained a fair attitude toward Avram. He bottled it against Spurs in the Carling Cup final with a ridiculous series of inept decisions, both in the lineup and with subs. Other than that, I have little to complain about. He did wonderfully to lead us to the CL final, and by letting Ballack play in a more advanced role we saw a resurgence in the league, nearly won the thing. It was tough on Avram to sack him at the end of the season--but that arrangement was never going to last anyway. Chelsea are a global brand now, and with that they hire high-profile managers. Avram isn't one. For the sake of all the fine Pompey fans here, whom I absolutely respect for their loyalty and passion, I'll end the CFC discussions!
RadioactiveD
Nice to get a win before Christmas but I thought we looked nervous and careless towards the end. Liverpool were p*ss poor.
uktony
Well done Pompey, a well deserved win against us today. Yes we were ***** poor but the game still had to be won. The red card didn't effect the result, but did effect the score. If you play like that for the rest of the season you will be fine. Good luck for the rest of the season.
WestDerbyRed
Goals were brilliant and exactly what we WEREN'T doing v CHelsea. There's no point stopping on the ball thinking about what to do next, belt the bugger into the net. How exciting was THAT! And a bit of handbags near half time.
hammersmithblue
Well done guys another nail in Rafas coffin.
TeddyLyon
Thanks WestDerby a true sportsman! The best team on the day won, as simple as that.
eastneydave
Brilliant win. I've not had much to smile about this year but I had a huge smile on my face after this great win. Happy Chritsmas.
storagematt
Great win!!!! I must admit I knew its coming but didn’t want to jinx it. This win is an outcome of something Avram always did so well, not just the tactic and the formations First of all he will work on the belief the players at their abilities. Second thing that he is trying to do is to give the players the understanding of peace and quiet in their game. Out of these 2 main goals he will achieve a third one - what any manager wants, and that is the players will "play for him" If anyone here was asked before the last two games if he signs on 2 draws (2 points), I'm sure about 100% would have singed that. Now we have 3 points and more then that we see a totally different team. Today I sow this game live with my 3 boys who all are Pompy fans starting few week ago The house almost fall apart after the first goal from our yelling and shouting ,mindless to say when the game was over. Wish us all many games like that O_V
israeli
Cant beleive i missed this game! what a result!! christmas has come early!!
nodster
Happy Days - Ben Haims best game so far and Kaboul awesome! Begovice can stay in the nets for me. PUP
BarneyArmy
Radioactive - That was 100% nonesense. the only manager that ever took chelsea to the champ's final as the better side was Avram Grant and if to be the better side in the champ's final(first you have to get there) not consider to be a "world class manager", so i really don't know what's "world class manager". so, with all due respect, get back to your chelsea and pray that they ever get back to the champ's final as the better side with a "world class manager". and btw - are you spying after me? LOL :-)
