Pompey vs. United

Fratton

Pompey v Man U

The end of another tumultuous week at Fratton will end with the visit of last seasons Champions, the preperations could of been better, but then again, this is Pompey.

Vital Quotes:

As Paul Hart departed and Avram Grant stepped in, I couldn't help but notice one of the red tops had a final dig at Pompey, can't remember its name, but it used to have quite a good football cartoon in it, anyway, the journalist in question said 'the last person with any integrity and decency has been kicked out of Fratton park, Pompey have now lost the sympathy vote and I hop they go down'
Nice sentiments, but I hardly remember the sympathy vote coming from any newspaper this season!

Avram has banged the drum about keeping us up, he reckons he will have funds come January, something his predecessor never had, but he also said the current squad is good enough to stay up.

Well United is a good as place as any to start then!!

Pompey Team News:

David James is set for another spell on the sidelines, but Begovic has been recalled from his loan spell at Ipswich, he will get another chance to show he should be his long term replacement, and if last seasons performances are anything to go by, we are in safe hands.

Steve Finnan is near full fitness once more, while Yebda and Belhadj should be over the knocks that kept them out last week.

Another returning to fitnees is Diop, he is a prescence in midfield, but United is probably here too soon. Likewise Utaka, he has been out for a month with a thigh injury, but he will give another option up front.
Piquionne may well replace Kanu, but we will have to wait and see what our new general has in mind.

Player to watch: Begovic

Big boots to fill, and will certainly get his hands warmed tomorrow.

United Team News:

Man U have some injury problems themselves, Evans and O'Shea are both struggling, while Ferdinand is out until next year.
Berbatov is also back to full fitness after 4 weeks out, but my money is on Owen and Rooney to start.

Player to watch: Rooney

Both Utd's and Englands best player, he will need to be frustrated for us to get a result.

Match Facts & Stats

Our form at Fratton is not too bad against the mancs, 3 wins in 6 seasons, before us Utd never enjoyed the South coast at all, another departed team from up the road enjoyed some success as well.

Ref Watch:

Sir Horace Gentleman

Match Prediction:

Can Avram get the lucky first win? Or is it normal service resumes and defeat? Plonk a bet here.

Next Fixtures:

Villa in the cup, then Burnley, both at home.

whose confident then?
paultsmouth
Not over confident Paul.
eastneydave
Nor me, then again, who is at the mo?
paultsmouth
Well it's football so anything could happen. I'm certainly not confident that we can turn them over. But I am confident that we can give them a run for their money. As long as they're not 2-0 up by half time and our heads don't go down I reckon Sir Alex will be getting a bit twitchy. I'm gonna hope for a fairy tale start to Avrams reign...2-1 Pompey.

By the way..Every time I first see that pic of Begovic I think he's wearing a dirty great plastic earring. Am I the only one.
cornypomp
me.

*forgot to refresh page after a long time.. that was directed at paultsmouth. anyway, I have a good feeling about this game. Sadley, my head is still telling me we'll lose... so i'll predict we'll lose 4-1. which for me, is confidant!

Is the ref really called Sir Horace Gentleman?
Lysimachus
errrm no :P and corny yea, every damn time as well lol

Good spot Lys, yes that's his name, recntly returned to his profession after a sabatical

I'm looking forward to a good match and a good atmosphere today, but I'm not expecting a win - not against Manyoo. But you never know. AG both started and ended his reign at Chelski playing Manyoo, and has a score to settle after the Champions League final.

Re the newspaper quote (last person with integrity and decency) - are they deliberately overlooking the supporters? And what do they know about either?

classic stuff paul...
i know i am crazy, but i am feeling it now! 'if' my bets come off i stand to make over £100 from £5 worth of bets - the most 'likely' ones, even if they may seem unlikley (dindane 1st goal, 2-1 win and that accumulate) could net around £80 for less than £2 stake - £3 on a pompey win gives me £27, inc. returned money.

Met Paul Hart 3 times before and after the Wigan game. What a man, a truly decent man. I am genuinely saddened by his departure and it is not his fault we are in this situation. A scape goat for want of a better word is what Pompey have done. RIP Pompey...

I woke up with a craz optimistic feeling for this one. Not only have we got a new manager, but I've got my lucky pants back. Haven't been able to wear them since Sunderland at home last season. They kept us up those pants.
PompeyFrippy
Well...don't keep us in suspense Frippy. Why haven't you been able to wear those pants?

nice prediction carpet. i made £30 profit. hey im on a win win here. either pompey get points or i win cash. i dont mind losing one for the other! but we were cack in the second half and shouldnt have the pen in the first half. we shoulda known they were gonna come at us at the start of the second half. wilson got a warning in the first minute when the ball was played over so i was incensed 2 minutes later we get caught and punished. piqs pen was also stupid. AG needs to go straight into the basics cabinet of the office and start the team with the "how to tackle successfully without giving a penalty in the box beginner edition" lol
pompey--pessimist
surely grant has seen enough of piquionne to see how dogpoo he is. he offers nothing at all up front, hes lightweight at best, shooting prowess makes diop look good, and when he comes back to defend, he does stupid things like the penalty incident, and it doesnt take a jedi knight to see this. At least utaka who offers something fairly similar up front doesnt bother to come back and act like frank spencer in his own box, send him back. tommy smith if not premier class, is still better than 'light said fred'
