Aston Villa vs. Pompey

Villa v Pompey

Hapless, pointless, rudderless, clueless.
Just some of the names being bandied around in the press about Pompey at the moment, some harsh, some carry a bit more weight. Pointless is factually correct, we may have deserved a couple of points by now, but a big fat zero out of a possible 15 tells its own story.

Vital Quotes:

It's been quite nice for the turmoil to have been at another club this week, O'Neill and one time Pompey target Reo-Coker have attracted the headlines this week, rather than Pompey and their pit of perpetual doom.
Pompey players are making all the right noises, Both Ben Haim and Smith have spoken out this week about how 'we will get it right', but is Villa park the place this will happen?
Let's face it, we will take a point absolutely anywhere right now, all the time we are rooted to the bottom with nothing, the further the light at the end of the tunnel becomes.

Aston Villa Team News:

I reckon Reo-Coker may well be missing from the squad this week, but John Carew is a man with a case for playing, he is was influential in Villa's win at Birmingham last week, and if anyone has watched Pompey this season a frailty in the air is a big problem.
Davies, Downing and Bouma are still out, but Dunne slotted in nicely last week and looks a fixture.
Nicky Shorey will be hoping to play against the team he snubbed in favour of bench-warming.

Player to watch: Kaboul

He has arguably been our best player so far, with the expected arial assault from Carew, he will need to be at his best, and he is also our top scorer!!

Pompey Team News:

Finnan is back training, but I think Carlisle looks a more likely debut ground, likewise Hreidarsson.
Willamson may well be in the managers thoughts, but upfront Dindane is still thought to be lacking fitness, so Piquionne has been issued with a 'time to start scoring' ultimatum.
O'Hara and Boateng will have had a little time to train with their new mates, hopefully producing a little more cohesion throughout the team.

Player to watch: Smith

Thought he was our best player last week, he seems more of a winger than forward though, but he has certainly put in a shift so far and looks likely to score somewhere.

Match Facts & Stats

A Sulley Muntari inspired win was our first success since 1970 at Villa park, will it be another 27 years this time?

Ref Watch:

Stuart Goddard (nice stripe)

Match Prediction:

Time to break the duck? Or six out of six? bet here.

Next Fixtures:

The mighty Carlisle

Come on Pompey, give us something to smile about!
paultsmouth
We have been happy with the performances, but we just cannot keep on saying this. Pompey have to start picking points, and playing Villa away is not a nice play to go, but every team is hard to beat. So, this afternoon, we really should take a minimum of 1 point. A win will be nice. Prediction (or hope, not sure): 1-2 for Pompey.
Pompey Malta
good luck lads, should be an interesting game, one thing in your favour is how charitable Villa can be. If another team is on a bad run, we very often help them out by losing, if a player hasn't scored in a while we do similar... it is very strange...! Still think we'll beat you though, if not I'll never hear the last of it from Rug!
The Fear
Hope Rug is bleating on tonight then Fear, I would definitely join him!
paultsmouth
arr that'd be greatly appreciated fear, just let piq score 1, go on you know ya wana ;) lol, i dunno MON was talking about how we will be dangerous cause we ain't got any points and i hope he's right, but in all honesty another good solid performance will do me (without the poor defending ofc) not many teams expect to get anything from villa at home so it'll be a hard game.
pompeym@
I hope this is the game to get us our first points. If we can keep it tight and grab a goal then I can see it happening. It dosen't have to be pretty, Off the mark should be our goal. Play up Pompey!
race
Oi! Fear! Where's our Interview With A Pompy fan????????????

IveJIve put a 10 on us to get something from this game. A short prayer: dear. Lord help the referred to be seen to be right in his decisions, help Portsmouth play positive attacking football and The defence be of accord; finaally lord don't let me be 60 down at 5.50pm today and not be able to buy any papers in the morning for not being able to read about another defeat. Ahmen
russellm
Amen to that Russell!
Gandor1
With bit of tactical nous and 100% effort we should be able to get at least a point. I hope we don't go into the match playing for a draw, cos that way we'll end up with nothing.
PFCblue
Going for the draw guys 1-1. We will score first but let in an 90+3 goal! lol. seriously though ... GL team - a good performance isnt remembered ... only the score line and points - so lets begin!
pompey--pessimist
lol nugent just scored!
pompey--pessimist
David Nugent just scored a great header for Burnley, the best ive ever seen from him, lol. He couldnt do it for Pompey though could he?
PompeyFcMad
At least we're not hartless!
footy_fans
nugent scores 2 ... you cant help but say it was gonna happen!!!! his confidence will be sky high now!
pompey--pessimist
I TOLD YOU HE WAS DECENT
PompeyJoe
One good game doesn't make him decent. He also scored three games in a row last season for us if I remember right. Still never really considered him decent. I still think we needed to get rid.
pompeywa
What a worthless bit of defending by Belhadj. Needless PK given away.
pompeywa
If we don't beat Everton we may as well look forward to the drop. Even Derby managed 11 points. Come on Pompey we have got something to aim at, 15 perhaps ?
pompeygray
sorry to let you down guys, we weren't at all charitable today, looks like major changes needed at Pompey as I don't think our lot got out of second gear for much of the game. (Ljkal the interview was up on the site, just had to scroll down to find it!) Good luck Pompey, your fans did you proud today, the manager didn't look at all happy, I think he knows his head is on the block but to be fair, when he was made to sell your top players, I'm not really sure what he was meant to do??
