Pompey vs. Hereford

Must win? Damn Right!

Pompey will be looking to get their season off and running of sorts tonight, Hereford are the opposition and will probably come with Giant-killing aspirations after dispatching Charlton in the first round.

Vital Quotes:

Pompey need a win, any sort of win, a comfortable win is preferable, but if we scrape it it will do.
Hereford are hardly setting the world alight in league 2, 2 draws and 2 defeats is their record so far, but Pompey can top that with 3 defeats of their own.
Leyton Orient springs to mind with this fixture, it was back in January 2002 when we famously got stuffed 4-1 at home, any repeat would not go down favourably with an already frustrated and disgruntled Fratton faithful.

Pompey have not met Hereford since 1983 in any form of football, and have only lost once in a total of 9 meetings, this was in this very competition.

Pompey Team News:

Pompey will no doubt field a weakened side (if it can get any weaker) James won't be chanced for certain, so take your pick from Niemi/Begovic/Ashdown as stand-in.
Marc Wilson is another doubt after limping out of the Arsenal defeat, Piquionne also is carrying a slight knock.
Nugent may well get a run out, if he can pop a couple in it could be the knock on the door Paul Hart needs.
Richard Hughes will likely figure, as may Joel Ward and Cowans-Hall.

Player to watch: Basinas

Hart obviously doesn't hold faith in the Greek, but if he can pass it around tonight he may well get more of a look in on Sunday.

Hereford Team News:

Ryan Valentine has completed a one match ban so should return at Left-back, while Bristol City loanees Plummer and Jackson have both been cleared to play.
Glen Southam got a cut to the head in Saturdays game, but should make the line-up.

Player to watch: Bartlett

Hopefully the Bulls keeper will be the busiest man on the pitch

Dead right Paul a must win. No Europe this so a run in the League Cup will be a good thing all round. 1-0 will do.
Must win indeed, for many reasons. One reason being so the damn redtops won't have any more ammunition to throw at us in reports! A good way to end and escape from the recent bull****. I think Niemi is injured, probably Begovic in goal.
Paul Hart will find a couple of plates coming his way if Basinas doesn't start.
MATCH PREDICTIONS anyone?? 2-0 Pompey
We've got to knock a few goals past these, but a win is vital.
Anything other than a win is unthinkable!
4-nil Pompey.
3-0. Nugent with 2, Cowan-Hall with 1. PUP
2-0 utaka and kanu
Team News... Begovic, Vanden Borre, Kaboul, Mokoena, Ward, Utaka, Basinas, Hughes, Kranjcar, Belhadj, Piquonne.
how negative another 4-5-1 formation we are the next leeds mark my words . tommy smith what a joke
Our bench is: Ashdown, Nugent, Kanu, Mullins, Richie, Hurst, Mahoto
No Distin - with all the transfer rumours about today what do we read into that?
Distin has a nasty gash on his insole according to Hart. They must think I was born yesterday.
arr **** that's not good, oh well say bye bye to distin.
More or less than 10,000 there tonight? I'm gonna say less.
Andrew.............Niemi went away for an operation as far as I know! no-body apparently realised this!! a great buy for the club ay?? just what was needed............... not! when we've already got 3 keepers................................
1 up that will do me...well done Freddy
Bloody hell, utaka ka ka 2-0
2-0. Utaka
welcome moley, I thought i was talking to myself
Nope, got the quay on and checking newsnow for anymore info on the takeover, will it be announced 2moz?
Well a good start then. More goals please they may be almost bottom of Div 4 or whatever they call it now but goals are good for the confidence.
3-0 Krunchie
Kranjcar 3-0!!! Can we play u every week, lol.
Niko - 3-0
Good performance so far, seems we are passing the ball well, hope confidence stays high for Sunday.
Job done, but I still i can't help worry a little, we sound disorganised and lacking at times. And our Belgian friend sounds as pants as he did on his debut...bit of a faux pas their me thinks. Glad freddie and Uslacker scored though!
Both Freddy and Utaka have got bags of pace which has to be utilised in the premier league, could be a proper handful as a partnership.
If Utaka pulls his finger out, I must stress!!!!
Nugent on, Utaka off
Come on Hughsey 4-0, we want 5, we want 5!!!!
Four up, and Mr Hughes gets it....Blimey
Nice one derrrrrso u plank, never a penalty!!!
Is anyone else updating 2nite apart from us Penton? Is everyone at the game?
Let's all laugh at scummers.
Sorry Moley my bally comp crashed, don't tell me it's now 4-5!?!
Nope still 4-1, should have been alot more, if only nugent could get the ball out from under his feet when through on goal!!!
Still can't get on Quay!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Job done, well played all round and fully deserved the victory. 3 points on Sunday and takeover away from being a stable club.
Well I am now online and very glad to see that we can score goals! Who has sounded like they played well and who has sounded awful?
Here's hoping Frippy, hopefully we'll take confidence from 2nites performance into sundays game and get something out of it. Plus point Joel Ward looked good coming in for Distin, maybe another one to watch, may well be playing if reports are true and Sylvain is off.
Van den Boring is awful, I think that might be a dudd signing unless he is just short of match fitness. Trouble is you haven't got time to wait for him now the season has already started. Belhadj did well again.
As I said Moley I lost the Quay, Did Van Den Boring sound as bad as I thought in the 1st half?
All we need to do now is take this new found confidence to FP sunday, and stuff those damn Citeh billionaires! Lol.
Yeah he looks a poor player, jury is definately out on him, I would prefer Kaboul playing at RB bot that leaves us short in central defence, especially if Distin leaves.
Anyone know if there are any highlights anywhere on the box tonight?
Wonderful. Mokoena was captaining the side? Is that true guys? How come not Hughes.
Pompey Malta
Mahoto was better in midfield than hughes (aside from his *fluke* goal), mokoena and basinas!
Highlights are being shown on a loop on Sky Sports News. And i think all the highlights from all the games are on tomorrow night, one either ITV1 or BBC 1.
I thought Nugent was AWFUL. Quite embarrassing. Two kiddies near me chanting "Nugget off, Nugget off!" At least I think that's what they were saying. Though Basinas did ok for an old geezer. At times when we were getting especially ropey in the middle (and you know who you are Richard Hughes), he managed to impose a bit of control and slow things down for regrouping.
