Newcastle vs. Pompey

St.James Park

27/4/09

20:00

On Sky

Toon v Pompey

There is a game on tonight, and believe it or not there are two teams playing, the press is full of how Newcastle are going to start their resurgeance tonight, but there is little mention of the other team invloved.

Vital Quotes:

Paul Hart has already dismissed the Shearer factor, stating that he cannot defeat us himself and that its Newcastle's under acheiving stars that must do the job.
Pompey still have a little bit to do in staving off the grim reaper that is relegation, 40 points would see us right, but with Arsenal going 20 games undefeated up next, as soon as those points are on the board the better.

Newcastle Team News:

Newcastle have a doubt of Jose Enrique still, he has missed the last two matches a knee knock and is joined as a defensive worry by Steven Taylor who has turned an ankle.
Viduka is pushing for a start ahead of Martins, but Michael Owen looks a safe bet to start.
Old mate Joey Barton has not recovered from a broken metatarsal in time (shame)

Player to watch: Nolan

Must wonder why he left Bolton after stepping straight back into the sort of disarray he thought he had left behind him, but he can make a side tick and has a decent goals record against Pompey

Pompey Team News:

Pompey may be without Nugent for the trip to Southern Scotland, the dead leg that forced him off last week is still troubling him and may let in Pennant for a first start since his own injury woe.
Kranjcar who it was though may be fit for this trip has been confirmed AWOL until the summer now, so its up to someone else to find the inspirational passes now.
Kaboul is still struggling with a thigh problem so this all points to Jonno at right-back with Nugget or Pennant in front of him.

Player to watch: James

If he is on top form a point looks good, the longer he keeps out a wave of black and white the more the Geordie hoards will get frustrated with their team.

Match Facts & Stats

Last season saw Pompey triumph 4-1 at St.James, a match I was priveleged to have been at, but the counter-attacking verve of last year is all to far away.

Ref Watch:

Boring Bob Grover

Match Prediction:

Can Pompey secure top flight survival or is Alan Shearer really the second messiah? Hedge a bet here.

The ref is a homer so we have to keep it clean, tight but not negative, Toon need to win so the game will open out and we will get our chances. Sit back for a nil nil draw and we will get stuffed.

who is the ref russ?
agree playing for a 0-0 will see us beaten i reckon. newcastle need to win more than us so they will be going for it, which will mean we get chances, but we need the support for the striker for this - barcodes arent a patch on manyoo and we did 'ok' on the whole there, similar performances, but with more attacking thought, and we can/will win tonight!

Yes, if we ship more to Toon than to Manyoo we will want shooting.

As I said on another piece, I too have a bad feeling about this game. Be just our luck for this to be Saint Shearers first win as a manager, wouldn't the press just love that?

Greetings from a dull, drizzly Tyneside! Wish you were here! Shearer's really building this one up isn't he, but is it because bravado is all he has? He's getting all the players and fans fired up, and they will come at us, but unless he's found a way to really organise them into a top class force in the last week, I doubt they've got enough about them to pull it off. Certainly the atmosphere is good, which is great, looking forward to it. I read a quote that Shearer thinks this will 'trouble the opposition' (it was one of the those articles where we weren't mentioned). Will it? I don't think Shearer's that naive - of course it won't. Which brings me back to bravado and a fired up crowd is all he has. Newcastle are really really desperate for a win, and this could work in our favour. Especially if we can silence their crowd, which an early goal (or 2 or 3) would do - in fact even 0-0 for a good while might get them frustrated. I'm not even sure if they're underestimating us, but then I go back to my point about Shearer not being that naive. A draw would be OK for us and a disaster for them. I think we'll at least get that draw, and might just nick it. Play Up Pompey! PS nice city, really like it!

It's not the worse result in the world if we get beat. Most of those around us did. A draw would be a great result & certainly would hurt them! A win would put us as good as safe. I know Hart will go all defensive & play 451 & hope to play ugly & not get beat. This will gime them the incentive to attack, get the home crowd going & loook for that first goal. lthink we should go for it & attack the fck out of them, shut the home crowd up.

Well the Toons are going for it, Three strikers from the off. Martins Viduka and Owen...Jeez, we'll have our work cut out keeping that lot quiet. However; it could leave them light in Midfield and allow us space to get at them.

Hope to exploit them down the wings, use the pace & bang in at least one goal!

If we play with some width and pace we'll stuff 'em. Playing for the draw will just play into their hands.

this one hasn't been built up at all? I'm still struggling to understand it. "newcastle really should be winning this one"... WHAT?! a team struggling in the relegation zone, that was hammered 4-1 last season, by a team made up of more england internationals than arsenal, liverpool and (probably) chelsea combined?! a team with "living legends" sol campbell, Kanu and John Utaka?! we should walk this one...

Lovely to hear from you Tracy. I heard Newcastle is a really nice place so you should enjoy it. Just hope you enjoy walking out of the stadium come 9.30! I wish you worked for the Newspapers, Carpet. We will play into their hands if we don't attack - I absolutely agree. I just hope Paul Hart can see it.

PS: Anyone seen the cartoon in the Daily Mail. In answer to Shearer giving out black and white flags, streamers and whistles etc., they have a cartoon of a load of clowns all dressed in black and white running on to the pitch. The caption is: "The new strip should do it!"

A belated preview is complete, the first 15 minutes and I reckon we will know the outcome, a result today and the summer holidays will be a step closer

Fat man waving flag and shouting the Bladon Races into a mic. This is the most embarrassing thing I have EVER seen since Delia staggered onto Carrow Road after too much cooking sherry.

we seem to be holding out and frustrating the ell out of Newcastle. Johno seems a bit out of sort. I reckon they could be there for the taking late on in the game if we can keep them at bay

I think its fair to say 'WE'RE SAFE!!!!', but i actually feel a little saderned by the dimise of such a big club in Newcastle. They just never looked like scoring and we're quite lucky to even get a point.
