Pompey vs. Swansea

Pompey v Swans

Pompey continue the defence of their cup (contrary to what the papers may think) by entertaining Swansea at Fratton, the second Welsh side to face us in a year.

Vital Quotes:

Pompey will be looking to keep their mini-revival rolling tomorrow, this time in the cup. The boys have found a bit of resiliance at last, and starting to get used to the system which served us so well at the start of last season.

Swansea have made all the noises about fearing nothing, their fans have taken up all their allocation as well, so we can expect a load of noisy Welshman around the City.

Last time Swansea played in Pompey they left with a hiding, not by the hands of the boys in blue however, but by Havant&Waterlooville during last seasons epic run.

Pompey Team News:

Pompey will include Jermaine Pennant in the team, on the right you would presume, but Nugent has performed reasonably well there of late and has been promised he will remain in the team.

Niko Kranjcar has been struck down with a groin tear, he limped out at Spurs and it appears he could be out for some while, so our midfield takes another blow and we lose our main creative spark.
Glen Johnson is probably our next biggest provider of goals , but he serves a ban after 5 bookings and Marc Wilson or Martin Cranie will cover for him.

Player to watch: Pennant

Point to prove or just playing it out until close season? Tomorrow will tell us a story, last thing we want is a bloke ducking out of tackles in case he misses a payday come the summer, but we will give him a chance to prove his worth.

Swansea Team News:

Swansea are undefeated in 10 games and are playinf fluently, Martinezs men play it the right way, so some football on the deck may be witnessed, thats if Fratton isn't under water!

Tom Butler has a groin problem, but if he fails to recover the MP Leon Britton is available after suspension.

Nathan Dyer is eligible to play, he is on loan from a struggling managerless Championship side, and his last appearance in Pompey was in court.

Player to watch: Dyer

He has gobbed off and said he wants to score for all the fans up West, certainly knows how to butter up the locals doesn't he?

Match Facts & Stats

Last time we crossed paths was back in the days of Biley and Hateley, Pompey hit 5 unanswered goals at the end of the 1983/4 season, and the last time we met in the FA cup was 1978, Swansea winning through on a replay.

I reckon another replay could be on the cards you know...

Am concerned that Glen Johnson, Niko and Papa aren't playing, but hey, we now have a bit of spirit about us and maybe, just maybe.....

Hate to say it, but as I said last week; we are in for a tough day. Can't see where we are going to create opportunities. I seriously see us going out. I do hope i'm wrong! Had hoped we'd have added to our midfield this week, Throughly dissappointed with the bleetings coming out of Fratton and the lack of action to back up the empty words!

its all a bit doom and gloom in here today isn't it!?..well, I recon we're going t win 2-0! yep, we're a few players down, but I still believe we have far too much for Swansea! 2-0, Crouch and Traore!

I too am hacked off with the boardroom promises but I do not see that translating on to the pitch .. We turned the corner last week - We are unbeaten in 2009 having only conceded one goal. The monaer we all wanted to go has gone, Pennant is making his debut, Nugent is sitting on cloud nine, James is superb form as it Kaboul, Campbell, Traore & Distin, Richard Hughes is back and we are the Cup Holders.. Sure Swansea will come at us and sure they will have a lot of possession bu that is our style of play now and we have to get used to it. I see nothing else other than a home win and quiet a comfortable one at that.

That's more like it Charlie. Pompey to win 3-nil for me. Yes, we're all disappointed with the BS coming out of Fratton Park about transfers but that won't have a bearing on the game. PLAY UP POMPEY!

Yep, I think we will win, may be tight, may be by an odd goal but that will do. We have turned a corned but whether we are heading down a good street, time will tell. We have a small squad & injuries & suspension show that. Time for the brave to get stuck in & be counted.
storagematt
not doom and gloom - we are simply going to be fielding a weak side (due to injuries, not out of choice), and so will struggle to break them down. hopefully though, we will be resiliant, keep a clean sheet, and steal a goal at the end.

Cyjax... I've been back to Vital Swansea to update my comments.. I think you are more likely to agree with those I made after the match ;) Well done Swansea. Show us up for what we are.. Awful

It's all well and good Tony moaning about "no fighting spirit" and, sure that was lacking in the first half but so too were 1) any semblance of winning tactics - i.e. playing JP throught the middle when he is a talented winger and crosser of the ball and keepin Nugent, a striker, on the right wing and 2) ability to pass the ball to someone in a blue shirt - no matter what bleeding formation we play is irrelevant if we can't keep possession. Football is a simple game; win the ball and pass it to a member of your OWN team.
