Pompey
vs.
A Dutch side

Fratton

17/12/08

19:45

Pompey get to wave goodbye to Europe tomorrow night, hopefully with a debut win over Dutch side Heerenveen.
Like Pompey, the Dutch lot are winless and have no chance of qualifying from the group, but surely no-one wants to finish bottom.

Vital Quotes:

Johnny Metgod has indicated that his compatriots are a good footballing outfit, something you come to expect from the Dutch, but they have picked up from an awful domestic start to rise up their respective table.

Pompey Team News:

Pompey have a squad of 22 to pick from theoretically, but Kaboul, Utaka and Diarra are all definitely out, so wholesale changes won't be quite possible.
Jamie Ashdown may get a rare run-out, and Marc Wilson must be in for a good shout of moving from unused substitute to actually playing.
Kanu should start also, but will it be Defoe or Crouch to partner him?
Hermann will probably also start, Belhadj has earned a rest and Sol will no doubt be hankering for a night off as well, the only shame is Nugent never got named in the squad by the previous manager.

Player to watch: Mvuemba

Arnold is a good prospect, but wide right on Sunday he was bloody awful, this is his chance to prove he is a central man.

A Dutch side Team News:

I won't lie, I haven't got a bleedin' clue about this lot, I looked through their squad list and was still none the wiser, Danijel Pranjic is the most familiar name, but will probably be rested in a dead rubber.

Player to watch: Sibon

Once of Wednesday, and as I've heard of him gets my vote as danger man!

Match Facts & Stats

Pompey have never won in Europe, and we have never faced a Dutch side in competition, hopefully more than one of those stats will change tomorrow night.

Match Prediction:

Can Pompey keep an elusive clean sheet? Can we hold onto a lead?

Having done all 5 home & away european matches, this is a massive anti climax. But, ticket is paid for & a 70 mile road trip is nothing to what we've done to get to Portugal & Germany.

I have a ticket but have got to be on duty at school christmas concert. Some of us have all the luck. See if I can infiltrate the choir and get them singing "Blue Army" instead of "White Christmas"

that would be good... if atleast our first and last games in europe were wins, maybe we could forget the bits in between! (or maybe not the AC milan game in the middle...)

A game too far for me, im afraid as much as i love Pompey, Liverpool to Pompey on a Wednesday night when there is nothing at stake is not a good idea. Instead see you all at the Reebok on Saturday.

I'll be there, even though I'm coughing and spluttering all over the place and generally feeling like ****! I did watch Wolfsburg play this lot on the internet, Wolfsburg won 5-1 and Heerenveen were awful, and very poor defensively. I really hope we get a win, because everyones feeling a bit flat about this, and if we lose to this lot it's going to be really awful. Not just a win, but a good performance too, whoever plays. But lets remember, this is Pompey playing a European side in the UEFA cup - so sing your hearts out for the lads!

oh, and I didnt get a ticket becuase I thought I wouldnt be in the country - which meant I couldnt go to see AC Milan either... and now I'm here, I'm GUTTED I won't be going... who cares about whether we are out of europe? This'll be the last time to see us play a team from the continent competitivly for some time... possibly
