Pompey vs. Wigan

Pompey V Latics

Tony Adams takes charge of his first match at Fratton Today, Pompey fans made their feelings clear last week against Fulham and we got our man.

Vital Quotes:

Tony Adams has declared that he wants Pompey to be a passing team, music to most peoples ears, we have got used to a brand of football under Redknapp, and its good to hear that Tony has similar principles, in his own words 'I've got to watch it after all'
The dust is settling on 'the departure', its more about who is fit again now, rather than what HR will do at Spurs, the sooner what he does at WHL remains at London, rather than dominating our thoughts the better, we are Pompey after all.

Pompey Team News:

Glen Johnson may make a welcome return today, he is not a definite starter, but is in the frame, Pamarot has deputised ably, but Johnson gives something extra going forward.
John Utaka is making all the right noises again, he put in a much more commited performance at Anfield, and if he can add a work ethic to his game, we may have the same dynamism down the right that we have on the left, and that would be worth watching!
Sol still has tight hamstrings, but Kaboul is looking the part in his abscence, playing in the middle rather than midfield is what he is made for.
Kranjcar will be on the bench once more, and this is where he expects to remain for a while, he is the first to admit he is nowhere near ready to start, but a match wining cameo awaits in the dugout.
Defoe will return upfront, his abscence on Wednesday raised a few eyebrows, but we were 15 mins from a great point, he will play more than he misses, but may get used to a subs role away from home at some of the stronger teams.

Player to watch: Utaka

Put in a shift on Wednesday, but consistency has been his achilles, if Tony can get the best out of him, he can take all the plaudits.

Wigan Team News:

Wigan a in free-fall at the moment, losing 4 on the bounce, but anyone who saw them run Liverpool close recently will be aware of the threat they pose, 2-1 up with 11 men, it was only when Valencia walked that they lost their way.
Valencia has returned to the side since Anfield, and both he and Zaki pose a big challenge, with old 'cauliflower arse' Heskey, Wigan are on the lookout for goals and a much needed result.

Player to watch: Zaki

The surprise package in the Premiership this year, goals are flowing freely, and Zaki is the fulcrum.

Match Facts & Stats

We've both conceded 15 so far, Pompey did let in 10 of those in just 2 games though, Wigan can score, but are leaking at the back.

Ref Watch:

Russell Brand (Ross on Sea)

Yes I know Squee, no more score predictions from me! But we didn't play badly, we had a lot of chances, and a lot of bad luck. If that wasn't the case we'd have more reason to be concerned. But losing at Fortress Fratton to Wigan is depressing isn't it. Its all Harry's fault!

We missed some fantastic chances, our boots seemed a lot more slippery than theirs and to my mind, you couldn't play proper football in those conditions. The pitch was completely waterlogged. Don't think we would have done any different if Harry had been there.

Tracy - I was typing that just as we went 1-0 down thanks to that Boo Boo Diop. You're right though, it seemed that we played ok and it was all rotten luck. And I agree that it's that bloody Harry's fault! Bet you he'll be in an interview later saying 'I got chocked up when I saw Pompey lost to Wigan' ...yeah, yeah Redknapp - I don't believe a thing you say!

Losing to Wigan is not depressing... we are a good side, you know. We've had some terrible luck of late. Two games we didn't deserve to lose, the other two we did admittedly but we bounced back at the right time and for Pompey, this is simply a blip but a welcome win for the boys in blue and white.

Or the boys in fluorescent yellow which may have helped a lot on the day as to be honest, there were times when I couldn't see the blue shirts clearly in that gloomy atmosphere. Might explain some of the dodgy passing (possibly not). I'd have worn white shirts with the visibility a bit hooky. Also Latics looked more physically solid - was this an optical illusion caused by the shirts or were there really a few more birck-outhouse types there? Pompey looked a bit flimsy in some areas.

Said it would be tight, 1 goal in it but had us down to win 2-1. Awful day, bleedin' awful. the start of many to come I fear.
