Braga v Pompey

Pompey's plethora of matches returns with another visit to Portugal, this time a little further up the road to Braga

Vital Quotes:

Harry Redknapp has gone on record in declaring that Braga are a better team than Guimares, this statement is fuelled by an old player apparently.
'I spoke to somebody who used to play for me, who is now out in Portugal, and he knows everything about Braga.

He also knew about Guimaraes, the last team we played. They were a good team but I've told Braga are a better team. So it will be a tough game.'
Well that is the news on the official site, but to us Pompey fans Braga are another unknown quantity, 5 Brazilians, A Cameroonian and Columbian frequent their line up, and they say the Premiership has too many foreigners!

Braga Team News:

Albert Meyong, a Cameroon international is likely to partner the Columbian Wason Renteria, if Wason is anything like compatriot Hamilton ricard we should be okay.
Braga are without a win in the league since the opening day, but have qualified for the UEFA through the Intertoto cup, scoring freely along the way.
Luis Aguira is the main man in the centre, most of the play goes through him.

Player to watch: Aguira

I know little about him, but from what I have found he is the boy to watch.

Pompey Team News:

Midfield is where the problems lie, Diarra looks like again missing out with his knee knock, Richard Hughes has only just returned to full training, so I reckon Diop will partner the soon to be suspended Sean Davis in the centre, Utaka I doubt will get a start as his lack of effort is starting to irk even Redknapp who has stood by his man so far.
Our defence may well contain Pamarot again who performed admirably at Villa.

Player to watch: Campbell

Sol seems to be having an Indian summer all of a sudden, his pace which seemed to have deserted him has miraculously returned, and he has become the man-mountain we love again.

Match Facts & Stats

Braga have yet to beat an English side in Europe, while Pompey are old hats with 1 win in 2 against the Portugese.

Ref Watch:

Ali Umbongo (DC Congo)

Match Prediction:

After our last trip to Portugal, any advance on the first half last time out will be a bonus, but will Harry go for it? I reckon he will, this is a one off and a win will set us up nicely.

Next Fixtures:

Fulham at home Sunday just after the Great South run

The stadium looks something else!

Sure does Paul. Shame we will have to watch game on the Internet though - if we can make it work that is!!
eastneydave
Going to have to try mate!
paultsmouth
Biggest ex-player I can find is Quim the goalie, got to say he has the best name in football!
paultsmouth
Braga could be a surprise package. The Portuguese press are talking this game up and see them getting through with flair. There's even talk of them making a move for Juande Ramos as a new manager!
Sindbad
But the revelation that Braga had a goalie called Quim (see paultsmouth) is of staggering importance. If you boys can't take advantage of this then what's the point of playing away in Europe!
Sindbad
This could be a very tight game, so we will well need the experince that some of our boys have in Europe already to see this one through. PUP
sneakay
Think you'll sneak a draw.

sorry, removed the link, use google if you need to find these sort of things as dataco can sting us for keeping links up to 'those' sites!
The Fear
no worries mate, thought as much!
SUAC51
I appreciate you can't post links up here to where I can watch the game on tinterweb, but any clues as to what I should google to find the right links would be very, very appreciated!

Dan - I've got an 'idiot's guide' I can e-mail out (its in powerpoint) - if you (or any members) contact me via the Forum with their e-mail address I'll send it -I'll give a deadline of 7.45 to ask! Otherwise try livetv.ru or footydoctor

Oh forgot to say - you have to keep trying the links!

Braga seem to be quite a bit lower in the Portuguese league than Guimaraes, I think this should be 3 points - and it should be a good game in that amazing stadium. Oh how I wish I was there!!

Ok... Ive done my research now... (looked at the pompey site, and a few others... but hey!). In the UEFA cup, teams tend to rely on there own home form being better than there opositions. In other words, you win your home games, you go through... and the away games you inevitably loose. Braga are going to be tough. they saw there rivals beat us in normal time, and they consider themselves better - in truth, I think they are about the same, as there 0-0 draw prooved when they played eachother after we played guimersesh(or however its spelt). Anyway, with AC milan coming to fratton, that is certainly not going to be a game we can expect to win. so we will need to make the most of our away games - wolfsburg ad braga. Having done a lot more research on wolfsburg, I have been told by a reliable source that we will likely win that (or more accuratly, that wolfsburg are **********...bad). However we definatly wont want to rely on that, or the home game against hereenveen - so a point here would be good. They will view this as an oportunity to take the initiative in the group (for the second/third qualifying places) we must do the same. I would be pleased with a point - a defeat leaves us on the edge, a victory puts us in good stead. Whatever happens, one things for sure - it'll be tough!

sorry for the long post... but I thought you might all accuse me of trying to increase my post count if I put it in lots of separate posts
pompeycarpet
which I would never do ;-)
pompeycarpet
Carept would we accuse you?
eastneydave
Probably!!!
eastneydave
*last two posts apeared in the wrong order (you may have guessed that?)
pompeycarpet
Post count away Carps...
Chix
I do..
Chix
Seriously though I know tonight is gonna be tough but I still fancy us to stamp a bit of authority on this group and pull off an away win...
Chix
They were my thoughts Chix. Sadly within 10 minutes it wasn't. i'll do a personal write up if anybody is in interested.
