Pompey vs. Stoke City

Pompey v Potters

Pompey get back to the gritty stuff again tomorrow after the glitz of Europe, and we will meet up with one or two familiar faces.

Vital Quotes:

Fatigue is the big worry for tomorrow, the match in Portugal covered 2 days after all! 2 hours of football on a Thursday night was not the best preperation for a game on a Sunday afternoon, but such are the trappings of stepping out with the big boys.
Pompeys battle weary troops only flew home yesterday afternoon after a goodbye dip in the Atlantic, but if the photos are anything to go by, it was hardly bath water.

Pompey Team News:

Diarra is a definite no-no, his two yellows against Spurs have seen to that, Arnold Mvuemba looks like a likely substitute.
Belhadj dipped out on starting in Portugal, but his fresh legs may well earn him a recall, especially if Harry reverts back to a 4-4-2 at home.
Traore ran his heart out on Thursday, but he really did look absolutely creamed in extra-time and may get a rest.
Sol Campbell would be the most likely recipitent of a deserved rest from the defenders, Hreidarsson is champing at the bit, as no doubt will be Younes Kaboul.

Player to watch: Defoe

Jermain let Crouch have the glory against Guimaraes, but you can count on him wanting the headlines back again, especially with an England squad imminent.

Stoke City Team News:

Pompey welcome back both Andy Griffin and Ricardo Fuller, both neither really cemented places in the first team, but we know how Griffin loves a tackle and Fuller can turn a match with a piece of skill. Also returning will be Amdy Faye, he was a midfield powerhouse for a while until his head was turned by agents.
Tony Pulis also comes back to Fratton, he was one of the victims of Milan Mandaric's impatience durin his reign, but he has really shown that he deserves a chance to manage at the highest level.
Rory Delap is the biggest doubt, the ex-uptheroader has a hamstring injury, and his Dave Challinor style throw-ins will be sorely missed.

Player to watch: Fuller

I reckon he would love nothing more than to bury one in the Fratton end, he never scored many for Pompey, but Bill Cosby has natural talent by the bucket.

They are a team packed with ex players and no Delap hopefully. Late change of the referee due to a transport dispute Dentresangle is replaced by Andre Marriner.

Will this be Westwood's first game at the Milton end then?? That's gonna be interesting, rumours of a bandstand being built for them.

Think I'm with you on hoping for a 1-0 paultsmouth...might even be bordering on quietly confident but don't think there's gonna be a lot of goals. PUP!

I've got us down for a 2-0 win, but I don't like the way everyone is saying they will be a pushover.

who's saying they will be a pushover? I am thinking a drawwould be a good result, as our team will be very tired, and there team will come at us hard, fast, and fresh - so I think we could just be run into the ground...

Before Europe, we all saw this fixture as a home banker. Now, there is some doubt. Stoke have proved to be difficult to beat as they naturally fight for their premiership lives. We will be tired, minus Diarra & the pitch will be very wet from the weekend rain. Stoke will play long ball & long throw if scummer Delap plays. A very scappy game, far from free flowing as they look to drag us down to thier level. It could be Pulis revenge tactics that wins the day but I hope we have enough to nick it. Dig deep lads.

I hope he's not Full of himself after making his mark at a club post-Pompey.

We have to get in front then see how things go,Belhadj & Mveumba should still be fresh & Davis just back so I'm still hoping for the win.

I'm with you Carpet, I would be happy with a draw, I fear a post-Portugal 'hangover' with tired players, and a Stoke team who didn't play midweek and will be really up for it. Play Up Pompey!!!

I think we will learn a lot about our season today, if we lose or really struggle then it will prove the squad isn't strong enough for a sustained European campaign
