Pompey vs. Sunderland

Pompey v Mackems

Back to the cut and thrust of premiership football for Pompey, we need a win to stay in touch with the Euro spots, Sunderland need one to stay out of touch with the relegation ones.

Vital Quotes:

Harry Redknapp has been praising up Kenwyne Jones this week, the big West Indian was certainly a handful at the Stadium of Light, he gave Campbell a torrid time.

Pompey Team News:

No new injury worries for Pompey, Nugent is still sidelined but looks Ipswich bound anyway. James has got off the toilet and should be fit to start, Ashdown is waiting in the wings.

Player to watch: Defoe

Benjani has departed and its over to Defoe to supply us with our goalscoring thrills, a European spot we want and its the England man with the responsibility to fire us there.

Sunderland Team News:

Richardson won't be available to score this time thankfully, a hamstring has him sidelined. Higginbotham and Liam Miller also look like dipping out.

Player to watch: Jones

Goes without saying really, the ex-saint will be in for stick, Campbell and Distin know what to expect this time, so if we stop him we should stop Sunderland.

no problems, and home win...just a shame we couldnt have scored more. commentators said sunderland deserved a point, but how can any team who fails to get a single shot on target deserve get a point?

There were problems merlin. However we didn't need a magician to win, just a DEFOE penalty. Yes it is good when you win without playing well. Mind you Sunderland's away record is atrocious.

We need to start playing well though. Not since Chelsea have we managed that!!

we played well against chelsea, arsenal, and then you have to go back as far as newcastle for a really good performance!

Performance was average at best but on the bright side we got the three points and showed a few signs of flair at times... Carps Sunderland did not deserve a point at all they shut up shop and played 4-5-1 and didn't even look to get forward ... good to see a fair number of Vital members (and friends & family) in the Brewers beforehand Me, Rug, Eastneydave, Linvoy4England, pompey4me, steaming. storagematt,... have I forgotten anybody ??? Oh and PE-TER-MAR-IN-ELLO on the pitch at half time too.. to be honest that made my day ... My idol as a kid... So a few beers and three points and a step nearer Europe ... performance apart.. job done ..

chix, had to laugh when Kanu came on! I can see you and your Bro from where I sit, But....you have to admit, the team looked better when he came on, if you dont admit that, you Have to admit It was 0-0 before Kanu, and 1-0 with Kanu!! Crap game, so i'm trying to think of the positives!!

baros was ****. that was why when kanu came on we looked better, it was like having an extra man on the field. but then, defoe wasnt much better...well, untill kanu came on, but maybe that could have been because sunderland opened up after the goal... either way, when kranjcar got the ball, i said we would get a penalty - it was almost identical to when he got the penalty against reading. i dont think he dived, but he forced the foul...

Bit harsh on Baros imo carps, I thought the guy ran and ran. Lets be honest, the front 2 were not getting much service. why oh why oh why oh why can no player at Pompey beat the bloody front man from a dead ball situation?

kranjcar did form two corners. one we should have scorred from, the other we should have got a penalty from. harry, we need to wok on set peices - and have done for a very long time.

And he did with a free kick, in fact that went about 100 yards over the wall and the goal!

Not much point on working on set pieces when we haven't got a player who has any idea of how to deliver them and while they look lie they don't care anyway. Contrast with the way Andy Reid took them and the confidence he had with them.

if you watched the ACoN, or more specificly Ghana, they had one player take every single set peice, and at some points, they were the best oportunties they got - and each one had almost inch perfect delivery...just a shame that said player cant replicate that form for us...

my 'promise' wasnt a stella moment... i wasnt drinking stella! in all seriousness i really hadnt drunk anywhere near enough for it to have been, sam's a nice kid tho p4me - had a nice chat with him when you got your beer in... yep i too thought of the kanu 'discussions' we were having prior to the game when kanu came on and gave quite probably his best perfromance of the season, arguably best performance for pompey full stop... i think it showed that he should be used - but from the bench...

Mutari was used a lot for set pieces in the African Cup and did them well. Kranjcar has shown time after time he is not consitantly good with them and that includes corners. If Muntari is does well for his country, why don't we use him every time?

P4me.. A Stella moment ... My life is full of them ..... But i'll always keep my promises... Just ask the wife (lol) .. If Arsenal win the league and Pompey finish 5th I'll take Sam and the entire site out ... ...;) Ok I have to admit that Kanu did make a difference yesterday but I think it was more to do with his presence than anything else.... Did you catch Roy Keanes comments on MOTD re Sunderland players being in awe of Pompeys... I think that was directed towards Jones, as, as the moment the final whistle went he swapped shirts with Kanu.. Also why did Diarra throw his shirt into the Fratton End... Is he off !!... anyway all in all a few good beers with you fellas and three points (and Perter Marinello of course) I had a good day...

diarra thowing his shirt into the fratton end was a nice moment, shows that he appreciates the support, the players should do that more often ;)

Chix, I appreciate the offer. There's a nice restaurant in "The Rocks" in Sydney. I can meet you there or would you just like to send the airticket and I can meet you in Portsmouth. There's a few of us from Australia so you might get a group discount. Your wife probably hopes you DON'T keep your promises...lol... mine just yawns.
