Shrewsbury - Fratton Park - 27th January

What a disappointing start to 2018 it's been... a defeat at Bristol Rovers to kick off the year was followed with just a point from meetings with S****horpe and Rotherham, admittedly the latter two are more along the lines of what we might have expected.

It doesn't get any easier this weekend at Fratton Park...

Shrewsbury, arguably League One's surprise package, have slipped a little following a blistering start to the campaign, but they'll prove quite a challenge at the weekend and might actually come to the South Coast feeling as if they're favourites to collect the points?

The third in a run of five from six games – Doncaster and Blackburn to come – that would tell us much about our play off hopes, is it too much to say Pompey probably do need to beat the Shrews on Saturday to keep pace with the top six? Especially considering the aforementioned upcoming games are sandwiched either side of a trip to MK Dons.

Gone are the days where we should expect to turn up at Fratton and beat Shrewsbury, who with all due respect most would more often than not feel would leave with nothing, but as always it'll be an expectant crowd at the Park... will we go home happy or disappointed though?

As said, I think we need to win if we want to remain in contention for a play off place, instead of becoming also rans this season. Do I think we'll achieve this though? The heart always says it'll be a Pompey win but the head isn't so sure. However, I'll let the heart rule the head, as it usually does, and go with a Blues win...

Saturday was disappointing, in as much as Pompey lost 1-0, but in fairness the Blues didn't play too badly - well, we have certainly played worse - against Shrewsbury.

January continues to be as poor as December was good for Pompey. Defeat against Shrewsbury made it three in the last four. A point against Scunthorpe is all we've got to show for 2018.

Most my views and thoughts on the game are shared in the front page posts, visible via the links above.

However, I'll say, I think we were unlucky to lose BUT paid the price for failing to create enough clear cut chances an take those we had. Also when you defend like we did for the goal you could argue we got what we deserved.

Jackett, we'll I think he made some 'odd' decisions with his changes and - admittedly injuries haven't always helped - his chopping and changing of the side too often.

A settled side - when he can, he should - is what we need.
