There was a time when Chelsea coming to Fratton Park would capture the imagination of all.

Not too far past a decade ago, playing Chelsea at Fratton - or Stamford Bridge for that matter - was such an exciting game we couldn't wait to come round. Without sounding flippant, it got to the point where it was a regular occurrence so was, in many ways, 'just another game.'

I do recall an FA Cup tie - think it was in the third round - at Stamford Bridge when Pompey were struggling as a then Championship side - again I think it with us at that level and was the season after the 2010 final against them? - that did quite excite me. Clearly not as much as the FA Cup final meeting in 2010, which was a final we weren't given a chance of winning, but a game I really did feel was ' meant to be' given what we had been through... sadly it wasn't, which was perhaps confirmed when Kevin Prince-Boateng missed his penalty.

Well, is a meeting with Chelsea's kids in the Checkatrade Trophy enough to set pulses racing this week? Quite bluntly, no. This competition has little to no meaning to the masses, the general comments over t'internet and lack of attendance from the fans - in fairness most fans at most clubs - speaks volumes.

Yes, it'll be a decent challenge for us in a game where I would expect Joe Gallen - who will lead the side in place of Kenny Jackett - to select a strong XI, especially given the fact we have had a break since the New Year. However, Chelsea, kids or not, and we are talking multi-million pound talent on display, as much as the attendance could be a little higher at Fratton, interes will not be that greater.

As for the game itself, if a result, whatever your interest, can be secured it would be surprising, right?

enjoyable game, ref awful, he seemed to think it was a pre-season friendly and let a lot go, first Chelski move after 20 seconds was a big lump upfield to a short centre forward! we dominated for 15 minutes but as usual failed to take half chances, Chelski switched formation and pushed up on our midfield and it became an even game.
Lazy stewards took an age to find people seats, took 2 policmen to sort, then annoyed to find numerous Chelski sat with us despite them having the Milton End( they were not local and moaned about Pompey whole game), stewards again not interested in moving them.
Their winner good free kick but again poor position of wall or needed another player on the end of it, that then lead to mini riot as their players ran whole length of pitch on the touch line goading Pompey fans, hence coins and bottles and a one man pitch invasion, thankfully 1 steward was alert and tackled him to the ground, all the ref did was pick up a bottle.

It seems the Chelski youth have learnt from Conte to act with no grace and plenty of arrogance, and no doubt they all earn more than the Pompey players on their yoof contracts.

Would appear possibly Thompson and Close injured as well, new bloke Ronan as short as Chaplin but stays upright more often, Kennedy poor final ball and May not at the races.

Ok, there's never, well rarely, a time when we want Pompey to lose but defeat to Chelsea U21 in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday wasn't the worst thing to happen was is?

Thanks for the views Wiggy - admittedly this isn't a competition I took much, if any, interest in. That isn't because I don't care about Pompey but feel the competition has been completely devalued over the years and disrespected, admittedly the Blues have somewhat done this too BUT it's the changes to the format that most put me off.

All being well Ronan can compensate for the loss of Rose as he's a massive loss, losing Close and Thompson is hardly ideal either.
