2017-18 Pompey Predictions League

Vital Pompey is happy to announce the 11th annual Pompey Predictions League competition will be running again this season, kicking off against Rochdale at Fratton Park.

Many of you will be familiar with the format having taken part in the competition in previous years. In actually fact most would have been involved every year we've run it, for that I again say thanks as always.

The squad is basically sorted and looking good so it should leave us confident for the season ahead but we'll keep the games format as it has been of late just going for the score needing to be predicted, not the scorers.

Simple but again effective... well, hopefully anyway.

HOW TO ENTER

As before this is a very simple idea that will take minimal time and effort, but should be a bit of fun for us throughout the 2017-18 season and also see just how much we go with our head or our heart.

To take part in this, as I say simple but effective yet best of all free, idea all you have to do is be a member of this site (sign up here) and be willing to spent a few moments before each game Pompey play to put forward your prediction on what you think the result will be.

THE RULES

You will have up until the time of kick off to get in your predictions – anytime after will not count less so with myself unlikely to be calculating the points again this season – with points then accumulated throughout the season. I would suggest predictions in the forum match day threads will be fine and if I get any predictions personally to me I'll pass them on.

Each league two game Pompey play will have a new thread within the predictions league forum created and you simply give your prediction on these areas.

1 - Pompey will win, lose or draw...
2 - What the score line will be...

HOW THE POINTS SCORING WORKS

Points will be scored for correct predictions in each category and will be given as follows.

1 - Correctly predicted match outcome = 5pts.
2 - Correctly predicted scoreline (You must specify which team will win by the result you enter!) = 5pts.
3 - Bonus points. If you are spot on with the exact result you also get a bonus of 10pts.

It is that simple really, but for example for the opening game with Carlisle I may go for Pompey to win 5-0. If this happens I would get 5pts for the win prediction and 5pts for the 5-0 scoreline prediction, so 10pts overall.

There would also be the 10pt bonus for being spot on with the outcome = 20pts in total.

Only predictions within the prediction forum will count. You only have until kick off to register a valid prediction. Although, as said, I suspect we'll accept them on the 'match day' threads for each game and at a push on the front page preview articles...

Points are carried forward continuously and the member who has the most accumulated points at the end of the competition will be the winner.

Only league games are covered in the overall game – play-offs if needed too – although there 'might' be spin offs for the League Cup, FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy games as well?

THE PRIZES

As with previous seasons 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will all win something, the higher the placing the better the prize therefore something for nothing – but your time – cannot be bad can it. This really is something for nothing as there is no catch as you do not have to payout anything.

Predictor of the month. The member that scores the most points each month will be put into the end of season draw for the predictor of the month prize. The more wins the more chances you have to scoop that prize.

GET INVOLVED

This is quick, easy, effective and best of all free. It is a bit of fun and should get some banter going so I hope plenty of you get involved again.

What have you got to lose guys?

It is not as if you are not coming on the site anyway, despite less actively getting involved – for whatever reason – now plenty still view so take a slight detour before each game we play, in the forum thread, and join in to stand the chance of winning something.

Well, that's enough from me, who is in?

===

As a note for the competition from last season I have to admit I completely lost track of it.

I'm not entirely sure who won what and who didn't. If anyone feels they missed out PLEASE let me know and I'll sort it out, otherwise, should I not hear anything by the end of August, I'll simply make a donation to a charity I plan to support to wrap it up.

PLAY UP POMPEY

Pompey Predictions League – table update #1

Over to uspompeyfan with his first update to the 2017-18 season...

It's always good to start a new season and today was no different. New season, new division, new owners, new Captain..... same crowd atmosphere and a nice 2-0 home win. Rochdale stuck around till the second goal in injury time, but the Pitman brace sealed the points for Pompey.

In the new compo league, the top three from last season, Daughter of Wiggy, Dorking and Jim Smith's Wig all secured a modest 5 point haul, but it was the ladies in general who showed up the men as Dasha, Morgan and Lorna all went for the maximum with a correct prediction.

Solid past players doubted Pompey's resolve in the first game and are duly stuck on 0.

Pompey Predictions League – cup table update #1

Over to uspompeyfan with his first cup update to the 2017-18 season...

The first cup game saw Pompey travel to Championship side, Cardiff in the EFL Cup. The side didn't disgrace, falling in extra time, after taking the lead.

The game may have caught our predicting team unaware with a decreased list of predictors; however, there was plenty of drama in the USPF household. The prediction is for the result and not 90 minutes. There would have been a bonus for saying draw at full time and naming the correct winner AET or winner after penalties.

Dasha therefore failed in her quest for points for that very reason and is duly fed up with life, like any teenage girl has a right to be, but tough, Rug's rules (and he was the arbitrator in this situation).

Next week is the Checkatrade (unless they went bust sponsoring it last season) Cup first game, but before then we have a fun affair in the league at Oxford......

Pompey Predictions League – table update #2

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

Welcome to League One Pompey. After a celebratory home opener, we were brought back to earth by a solid Oxford side who may surprise a few people this season. After a good first half, Pompey were frail at the back and got what they deserved out of the game.

Langston got the only points in the competition, the only person who seemed to know that Pompey had to fail at some point. He has jumped over the pack and slips in behind the three leading ladies who got it spot on last week.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #3

We might remember that we endured some rubbish at the Park early last season but still secured the Championship by May. This is the only consolation from a poor performance in front of 17,169 vociferous fans. Poor defending put us behind and a gifted penalty put us level. Overall a fair result from a game we expected so much more from, though we could be excused for being greedy, maybe.

Three players top scored with the 1-1 scoreline and this saw Trina jump to the top of the table with a late email prediction. Penton and Wife of Wiggy got off the mark and joined the group lying 5 points behind Mrs. Rug.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #4

Chaplin became the cookie monster as the small forward came on to prove his former gaffer wrong, by scoring the equalizing goal. Not a game for the purists, but most fans would have been happy with a point just before kick-off.

Jim Smith's Wig got his first perfect score for the season, while Ms Lorna achieved her second, which gave her a 15 point lead at the top of the table. Dasha and Wife of Wiggy also predicted the stalemate, leaving four of the top five spots filled by the fairer sex. Six players still remain rooted at the bottom of the pack with 0.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #5

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

The lower league TV hoodoo struck again as Pompey looked sloppy at best, downright awful at worst in this September Sunday affair. No points were scored by anyone as we all believed we couldn’t lose to Rotherham.

Lorna still leads by 15 points over the chasing pack and we still have a bunch of players waiting to break their ducks.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #6

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

After a less than stellar start, Pompey surprised us with a solid away performance and a nice, well deserved 2-0 win. Hopefully this is the sign of good things to come.

Jim Smith's Wig jumped to the top of the league with a perfect score, while Steaming got off the mark with a maximum too. Dasha and Trina separated themselves in joint third place as they also believed in the Pompey away success.

Lots of shots with no finish while the Cobblers were effective with all three of their shots on target. Another reminder that last season’s frailties will gather no points in League 1 this year.

Langston was the only realist who garnered points from Northampton's win, and the table hasn't changed with the women chasing Jim.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #8

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

Surely a day to celebrate as Pompey clobbered a fancied Fleetwood side who came prepared to play, 4-1 with a brace each to Pittman and Lowe. It wasn’t just the scoreline, but the quality of the finishing that made the game memorable; even Fleetwood's equalizer was unstoppable to be fair. While the score was a little flattering, Pompey were worthy winners on the day.

Predictors were unusually subdued prior to the game with only 9 people predicting home win. This could be due to a removal of the blue-tinted specs, but two regular posters, Ibizan Blue and yours truly, USPF, are still awaiting their first points.

Little change at the top as the top 5 all predicted Pompey's victory (could be a reason why they are top 5) and Steaming jumped into the 6th spot with his prediction of the blues win. Jim still leads Lorna by 5 points and they in turn have a 10 point cushion over the pack.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #9

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

This was always going to be a tough game as they were a useful side. Sloppy defending and a lack of effective firepower meant that the hosts ended up with a comfortable victory and Pompey remain asking questions of themselves.

Morgan was the only person with maximum points and leaps into second place. Dasha jumped to 4th with a home win and Blue exile was the only other player who knew Pompey would leave without points. Jim Smith's Wig still leads but Morgan is only 5 points behind, with Dasha and Lorna a further 5 points back.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #10

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

Pompey were impressive during the second half, but having gone ahead in a slightly fortuitous manner, ran out deserved winners under the Fratton lights. Pittman scored another brace which lifted him to joint top scorer, something we haven’t had for quite some time.

Then there were two…. Fratton Blue and Ibizan Blue remain the final two players as USPF finally got off the mark. 5 of the top 6 knocked up the 5 points for the Pompey win as the top players remain the same with Jim Smith’s Wig leading morgan by 5 points.

Another home game with the potential of another 3 points that will bring Pompey into the top half on Saturday.

Pompey Predictions League – cup table update #2

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest cup update to the 2017-18 season...

Penalty woes are usually horrific, but the unfancied Checkatrade Cup game made a penalty loss just an excuse to break a drawn match which tried to have football looking closer to Ice Hockey's NHL. The overall result was a 3-3 draw for the sake of scoring, however, a 5 point bonus for guessing a draw and Fulham win aet or penalties was offered up as decreed by Rug as compo supremo.

Morgan and Jim Smith's Wig gained the benefit of guessing the aet scoreline, while Wife of Wiggy stopped at the draw prediction. These were the three points gainers, and allowed Morgan to grab a 10 point lead at the head of the cup competition. Lorna and Frippy remain in joint second place after the Cardiff result, leaving Jim to take 4th spot with his ten point haul. Wife of Wiggy joined four other players on 5 points, leaving a host of disappointed predictors who have the false hope that Pompey will ever win a cup game.

It is fair to say that at least Pompey won and any win is better than none. Almost as many people predicted in this game as appeared in the Milton End. We must hope that our win-loss alternating doesn’t hinder us in the league though.

USPF, Dorking and Dasha all got 5 points to draw closer to Morgan who is leading the pack.

Consistent in our inconsistency as we alternated wins and losses. However, this was disappointing and another poor home serving for patient Pompey fans. That said, we play like what we are, a mid table team who won’t go down and to be fair, probably won’t go up either.

Pompey fans were optimistic as no one scored any points for the defeat, leaving the table unchanged with Jim Smith’s Wig leading Morgan by 5 points.

The top two players were joined by Steaming as the 3 players tied for top September scorer.

This was a struggle to watch and considering the lack of experience in the Gills defense, Pompey made heavy weather of the next to bottom, hosts. However, Pompey have slipped on these banana skin fixtures before, so the victory and three points will be a sweet reward.

A big change in the prediction table as Jim Smith Wig has a whopping 25 point lead as he grabbed maximum points, while the other leaders lacked faith in the blues. Both Daughter of Wiggy and Blue Exile jumped into the top 6 from nowhere as they both grabbed max points too, along with Storage Matt.

Pompey Predictions League – table update #13

Over to uspompeyfan with his latest update to the 2017-18 season...

It was nice to see a very controlled Pompey performance where everything seemed to slip into gear and Pompey securing another three points. Hawkins is certainly having a golden period and grabbed his brace well. Suddenly Pompey are looking at the leaders without the need to look downwards which is comforting.

5 players scored a maximum tally today, including USPF who scored only his second maximum of the year. Morgan closed the gap on JSW as the top two are pulling away a little bit, while Steaming scored another maximum to move quietly into third with 55 points

We have a quick midweek turnaround as Pompey go on a long road trip.
