Dickinson, Pompey 'til I die!
2000200025
Hi all,
Been ages since I've been on here, but just to say, had a message last eve from my cousin who's worked at Swindon FC for 25yrs that Nathan Thompson is due to have a medical with us today.
I asked her her opinion of him andd she said; don't rate him personally but he's a lovely guy. If he was any good he'd have been snapped up when his brother was.
Plus she said, he'll need all the help he can get witch a medical, as he's just returned from a three week honeymoon...fat git! (Her words)

So there we are...possible movement with at least one signing

Captain at Swindon, Nathan Thompson's out-of-contract at the County Ground and has reportedly opted for Pompey ahead of a move to Charlton?

Hi Penton, great to hear from you - on Vital Pompey anyway

Kenny Jackett hasn't been moved on Thompson has he, merely playing the - which I like tbh - we'll know about arrivals, he'll talk about them anyway, when they happen.

Cannot quite get my head around this one? We have three excellent central defenders in Christian Burgess, Matt Clarke and Jack Whatmough - do we really need another one? Especially if he isn't as good... well, unless he can play in a full back area?

Made all the more odd by the fact we wouldn't go for James Henry as, in the words on Joe Gallen , we've got enough players in those attacking areas. Surely we have enough in central defence too, taking Tom Davies into account too...

Hi Rug,

I can't work this out either! Talking to Gill she really isn't impressed by him as a player and says he's injury prone too!
The consensus on forums seems to back her up, a real Marmite player.
Now Henry I'd have liked us to look at!

Would share this in a front page article but not sure if you would want me to/they would? Obviously people view the forum so it's no different but not sure what you think?

If Thompson arrives doesn't stack up that Henry, who would actually add to the squad I feel, wouldn't.

From what I'm reading Rug he can play at right back as well, which means Evans can be a back up and be used as a midfield option as well.

Same as Penton, I'm hearing mixed reviews about him, quite a few rate him highly and others don't see the hype, but I do think it's a position we need strengthening, and also gives us an additional option of playing 3 centre-backs - as I believed he was played in at Swindon.

That being said if Jackett is looking at 'proper defending defenders' then Thompson might have the edge over Burgess and Whatmough, who both defend well but are more 'ball playing defenders' popular in the modern game really.

Clarke can play footie but he's very much an old skool central defender isn't he, no nonsense approach.

Again, thanks for sharing, will be interesting to see what happens. Right, must get some work done.

'Versatile' is certainly a word I've heard used with Thompson. If a right back too then might not be so bad as I do think we need another right back tbh as not sure, as good as he was, Evans will be as impressive in League One as he was League Two at right back.

With Tom Davies seemingly heading to Tranmere it would also offer extra cover. Thompson would still be behind Burgess, Clarke and Whatmough for me, granted I've not seen enough of him to say 100% certainly he isn't an improvement.

Out-of-contract at the County Ground, Thompson was offered a new deal at Swindon but opted to end to his Robins career after League One relegation. He signed a two year deal at Pompey.

You sure did Penton, spot on as it's now a done deal!

My anniversary today too... wedding anniversary, four years now. Wife's at work all day, I would have spent it with her otherwise, of course.

In light of Thompson being listed primarily as a right back, capable of playing in central defence and midfield too, I'm happy with this deal and back Kenny Jackett's judgement.

Welcome to Pompey Nathan.

Cheers Penton - other halves birthday Monday so we'll tie in a double celebration, so don't expect me around at all Monday guys.

Aye, indeed she did come through. A mate of mine is a Swindon fan so if there's anything else coming out of the club you think they might want to know do let me know via WatsApp or something so I could let them know.

Prior to his departure for Wigan, Paul Cook wanted Nathan Thompson at Pompey. Interest was retained by Kenny Jackett, who completed his free transfer signing from Swindon last week.
