Well, you have to ponder such things...

Like you say though NOT going to happen although they wouldn't necessarily have to be a conventional front pairing.

Oh the thought of this gets me excited, but it won't happen. I do think we need a change up top however. Smith has faded in the last few games and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else given a chance, Chaplin for me.

In addition, I'd give Lalkovic a start ahead of Bennett. He looked so hungry for it when he came on against Doncaster.

But think of the damage Lowe and Chaplin could do if let loose against a dodgy defense.

When speaking to Cookie, he did talk about his system and the idea of the 4-2-3-1 is to get the attacking midfielders high up the pitch so it's like playing with 4 up front, not just 1 isolated striker. Then you have the full-backs bombing on and playing like wingers, Rose pushing on as an extra body from midfield, and the centre-halves coming out & playing, effectively leaving just Doyle and one other player back. That is not defensive as some suggest the home formation is.

It's hard on Smith and he takes a lot of stick when quite often he doesn't get any support and people aren't running beyond him, which is one of the problems with the system as it is essential that the midfielders join the attack. He is then left to try and do all the running, holding up, and finishing. Then there's the service into him which is often hopeless punts forward rather than working it into his feet. But he did have a good spell of games in November/December where we saw what he really can do and he was unplayable at times. It just doesn't happen enough.

Cook did say though that he knows he needs to play a 'second striker' behind the main front man when teams come to FP and sit deep. Lavery was the perfect player for this and knew the role inside out. Cook said that the club offered very good money for him but Wednesday weren't interested in accepting. He also said that he pushed hard in the summer in attempts to bring either Lee Novak or Nicky Ajose to the club but they both chose to go to Charlton for more money.

That's why we're targeting another striker. Somebody who is a handful and links the play very well, while creating space for others to get in. Personally, I think Ryan Taylor would have been a great lone striker for us as he was an intelligent footballer who held the ball up well and battled well against defenders, plus his finishing massively improved at the back end of his time at the club. Cook pointed out that Pompey have already had most players in L2! It's all about getting the right player in now.

Good post FrattonBlue - I'm absolutely shattered as its been a long day but will revisit this and see if I can turn some of this into front page material next week? Away for the weekend - taking in my first game in months - so computer free weekend in many ways.

Hard to justify shoving Lowe straight into the starting line up but I would have him on the bench. I'd play Smith and Chaplin, they have looked dangerous in the limited time they have had on the pitch together. I'd also push Evans up and bring in Buxton, get the back 4 sorted and a little tighter to allow for the extra striker. Smith is no lone striker. I liked Ryan Taylor but his best spell was playing with Tubbs in my opinion. I'd like to see Lalkovic get more game time but if it's 442 then you can't drop Naismith at the moment. So just a couple of changes for me, Bennett for Chaplin, Buxton for Baker, we are then spoilt for choice on the bench, Whatmaugh, Davies, Talbot, Linganzi, Lowe, Hunt, Lalkovic, Baker, Bennett, Roberts... 6 from 10 to sit with O'Brien... or 4 from 6 if you include Whatmaugh and Linganzi as Def/Mid subs (leaving out Davies and Talbot). When I look at this I can't help but think we should have cashed in on Bennett when we had the chance.

Called it exactly as it happened didn't you weller - Smith and Chaplin with Lowe on the bench.

Do agree all in all though that Lowe probably couldn't come straight into the team. Wouldn't call Smith and Chaplin a conventional pairing but it 'seemed' to work on Saturday so hope we see more of it!

Lowe looked good when he came on against Rochdale but his sending off resulted in a ban - this suspension didn't apply to the Checkatrade Trophy when he scored two against Fulham.

Looking forward to Lowe's return - thought he impressed before his sending off against Rochdale and looked decent scoring two goals against Fulham in Checkatrade Trophy.

Wouldn't surprise me if he started at Wigan you know.

Lowe's position was probably under threat heading into the weekend and at half time he was one that could have come off - he did the job in the second half though scoring two goals, including is stunning second.

Enough to earn himself a place in the Team of the Week? Apparently so.

Jamal Lowe will be very much part of the long-term future at Pompey - even if his former Hampton & Richmond teammate Nicke Kabamba isn't? - as he's signed a new deal.

Well, I'm happy with this. Yes, Lowe has shown some inexperience in the Football League at times but also proven his ability.

Securing him until 2020 - potentially 2021 - should see the next few impressive years of his career, perhaps the best of them, at Fratton Park.
