A deal has been agreed with Poole for them to take Ben Close on loan for the next month on a 'youth loan.'

The end of season traditionally sees clubs give younger talent a chance, Pompey were no different in that score with caretaker Gary Waddock, and credit to him, doing this with us.

Several younger players were given a chance in the final weeks with his attitude, which I like, being one where he looks at ability, or potential ability, first and forgets the age - perhaps an easy thing to do when you are only the 'caretaker manager' mind!

Of course injuries helped make such moves easier but among those who played a fairly prominent role in the final weeks was Ben Close, who he has spoken very highly of in the News this week...

All in all Close started the final 3-matches of the season and, from what I saw of him at Fratton at least did appear to grow in stature.

Extension to an extension!

What with the talk of Conor Chaplin perhaps getting a new deal, which I complete agree with as I've said, it reminded me, as did the performance that he put on as captain of Pompey in the Paint Pot Trophy defeat at Exeter, Ben Close DID sign a new deal recently!

That, and I apologise for this, I overlooked it appears...

Close, regularly given a chance by Gary Waddock at the back end of last season having been brought into the 1st team picture by Andy Awford, signed a new deal with Pompey in the summer.

He only went and signed another one the other week!

Glad we've got Ben on a new deal as he's got something about him.

Think 2017-18 will be a big season for Close, well, a make or break one anyway, as if he's not there or thereabouts in the 1st team I'm not sure that 'option' will be taken up. Not quite 'now or never' but think next season will define his Pompey career.

Pompey midfielder Close to a return

If I'm completely honest I didn't realise that Ben Close had been missing from the 1st team squad, at least having a chance to compete, due to injury - I thought it was simply a case of him being overlooked in favour of others!

I really should pay more attention, as injury issues must have been revealed at some point, right? Although I'd missed that...

Either way Close was another of those involved in that friendly win over Crawley last week.

Close has been in and around the 1st team squad for a while now but has suffered several injuries since Cook arrived so he's not been as involved for Pompey as he could have.

I accepted some time ago that my dream of playing for Pompey, let alone scoring, wasn't ever going to happen - Ben Close can now say he's managed both, scoring at Blackpool on Saturday.

Several times I've written, in fact I think it was around this time last year, if Close is 'to make it at Fratton Park' now is the time - if his first goal cannot act as a spur then nothing will.

Definitely think it's make or break for him this season, hope it'll be make as opposed to break...

A two year extension to his existing deal will now see Ben Close remain with Pompey until the summer of 2020.

Well, it certainly seems Kenny Jackett very much feels Close has a long-term future at Fratton Park owing to this extension. Certainly been his real 'breakthrough' season hasn't it.
