Defoe to finish Pompey's top scorer!

Jermain Defoe will finish the top scorer for Pompey this season! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from Chix's poll are thoughts that I would like to agree with, and think 'could' happen but would not stake too much on... although I do like a little flutter so I would be tempted to put down a little bet!

Benjani left this week with 12 goals to his name - see below in the 'current poll' section for further thoughts on this - and whilst Defoe started with a goal on his debut - which could have been 3 on another day - with only 13 league games to play this season he would need to average almost a goal per game between now and the end of the season to do this...

I would not bet against Defoe managing this feat, particularly given some of the teams that we face but it is a tall order, but not impossible by any means particularly for a striker of his pedigree and goalscoring ability.

'If' Defoe could go on to score a further 12 goals between now and May, as all of these would come in the league - as he is cup tied - then I think that we would almost certainly make it into a European position at the end of the season, although it is not to say that we will not by any means even if he cannot.

What the poll asked - With Benji gone and Defoe off the mark who do you think will finish as Pompey's top scorer?

How you voted - Defoe 42%, Benjani 39%, Baros 5%, Nugent 3%, Utaka 3%, Muntari 3%, Kanu 2%, Kranjcar 2%, Diarra 1%

Current Poll - Benjani finally completed his '£7.75m' transfer to Man City this week - but we only got half this amount up front, but 'might' get more, with Pompey confident that 'we will get the full amount'...

The rest of the money that we get for the 3rd top scorer in the what is considered 'the best league in the world' is dependant on how many games he plays, so how many do you think he will play - this is what whitestones wants to know with this - 'how many games do you think Benji will play for Man City?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

It would be fantastic if JD could score another 12 goals in the remaining 13 games, tough going though.

Methinks unlikely too but would be great. Now next season will be different.

I missed this poll but wouldn't have voted for JD for precisely the reasons Rug outlines. It would be nice to see it happen tho'.

I agree with you fellas, I just cant see it happening. I wonder which people voted for him tho?

I did Stones... I just think that the guy has a point to prove and although it's a tall order there are some teams who we are due to play who can not afford to settle for a point.. JD will get chances and we know he can take them .... Yep I'm happy to stick my neck out and have a flutter on this one.... Pompey have goals in them at the mo and if we play like we did against Chelsea we can bag a couple each game.. and who's to say that JD won't get one of Pompeys every two ...

depends if he plays the loan striker, if he does no chance he is too lazy, if its 442, then with Krunchie coming back to his game( not yet convinced about baros) i think it is entirely possible, rememeber of benji's 12 goals 6 came in two games

in all fairness i thought that defoe worked hard last weekend - granted it was his debut so he would... im still not sure he is as lazy as is believed tho tbh, altho in all truth if he bangs the goals in isnt that the most important thing? as i say i think he is really going to have to go some but he is the kind of fella that could get 5 or 6 chances in a game and i would fancy him to take 50% , 30 odd % minimum of these chances so you never know... im not writing it off, but it will be tough - i too will be having alittle flutter on this tho Chix :-)

'channel 5 bolton crap' i like that, hopefully next season we'll be seeing european football with pompey - i assume that channel 5 is 'the worst' channel to be shown on?

Defoe is really good striker. Maybe at the top of Pompeys

benjani only scored in 8 games this season, so theres no reason why defoe, a more natural finsisher, cant. in a 90 min game ur always gonna create chances, and with a great finisher like defoe if he can even take 1 in 3 chances then hes going to do well. he maybe should have scored more against chelsea, which is already a good sign. and he wont have to face many (if any) better defences this season, as he is cup-tied, and certainly not a better keeper.

and the results show that it was a very close vote, could have gone either way, so i think it will be very close, no matter which way it goes!

fair point bakes - when you take that into account he has a chance - he will take more chances than not, so if we give him them he will take a large percentage...
