'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Teams - England v Switzerland

Before anything else I would like to say that I hope that the minutes silence in tribute of the Busby Babes that were tragically killed 50 years ago will be impeccable observed, which I feel it will - I also hope this is the case in the Manchester Derby at the weekend.

David James and Glen Johnson were in the original 30 man squad, but Johnson missed out on the final 23. However on Sunday night Jermain Defoe was called into this party.

James starts in goal as he looks to rightly stake his claim to be the England no.1 that he should have been for the past 2 years. Defoe takes a place on the bench, but then again so were the rest of the squad...

This is the England line up:

David James
Wes Brown
Les Ferdinand
Matthew Upson
Ashley Cole
David Bentley
Jermaine Jenas
Steven Gerrard
Gareth Barry
Joe Cole
Wayne Rooney

Substitutes
Scott Carson
Micah Richards
Joleon Lescott
Jonathan Woodgate
Wayne Bridge
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Owen Hargreaves
Ashley Young
Michael Owen
Peer Crouch
Jermain Defoe
Chris Kirkland

This was 'supposed' to be a game in preparation for Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria this summer, but as we all know this is not how it panned out...

Switzerland line up like this:

Benaglio
Senderos
Gygax
Barnetta
Spycher
Yakin
Inler
Lichsteiner
Nkufo
Fernandes
Eggimann

Substitutes
Zuberbuhler
Coltorti
Margairaz
Grichting
Behrami
Huggel
Vonlanthen
Ziegler
Derdiyok

For those of you not at the game, if you are listening on the radio or watching on TV why not make a few comments below as the game unfolds so we can share our thoughts... having James involved will surely capture people's imaginations tonight wont it?

Nice One Fabio .. You've picked the best English Goalkeeper for your first game.. Do yourself & Pompey proud Jamo..
Chix
Hopefully JD might get a shout too... Two Pompey players in the same England team, how good would that be ..... when was the last time that happened ?
Chix
england's no.1, england, england's no.1...
pompeyrug
yep, lets hope defoe gets on too... as for your question, where is dave when you need him :-)
pompeyrug
26 mins gone Jamo has done well apart from one sliced clearance. Switzerland are a very physical side and a number of England players have been kicked around the ankles. Keep JD on the bench methinks.
eastneydave
maybe a good shout dave, we cant afford him to get injured... i dont think he will get on anyway will he, as he was late into the squad - unless he has really impressed in training? yep jamo has done what he has been asked too - its a typical england performance so far isnt it...
pompeyrug
Spoke too soon, Rug! :)
Aamir
1-0 at half time I'll settle for that .... a clean sheet in the second half hopefully...... Makes me mad that Switzerland are in Euro 2008 and we aren't ... McClown for ya.. hope he gets the Scummers job and takes them down... but that's a different debate !
Chix
weve been much better in the 2nd half - and in fairness werent that bad in the 1st... shame that jamo has been beaten, but there was nothing he could do for the goal was there, despite what motson 'might' have been hinting at... 2-1 up tho, so far so good...
pompeyrug
Yeah agree that Jamo couldn't do much about the goal.. His failed collection right at the end may stick in the memory but hopefully the game will be remembered for it being Capello's first game and nothing else.. James didn't have a lot to do but seemed to do it well..
Chix
that was a 'jamo bored as he had nothing to do so lost concentration' moment wasnt it, which in all fairness are few and fair between now arent they... he did alright tho didnt he, i think the fact that he started this game means he is pretty high up in capello's thinking so as long as he keeps playing well for us between now and france he should retain the shirt? if he plays against france he will get a better run out, then we will see what he is made of - i think he has a few demons of his own to get rid of against the french doesnt he from euro 2004...
pompeyrug
The friendlies will give a chance to many, it's how he picks for the w/c qualifiers that matter. Hopefully Jamo's league form & Pompey's continued success, will keep him in the No.1 spot. It should also help Defoe & Johnson.
storagematt
jamo didnt have anything to do, gerrard noway deserved motm, what was upson ding on the field? we played better when shaun wp and hargreaves came on. wasnt pleased with jenas either. but at least we got a win!
jbaker
and bentley was really impressive, at least capello doesnt care about him rejecting an u21 call up
