'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Nugent targets Preston comeback

Dave Nugent is back in light training after his hernia operation - which had been troubling him for some time - and should be back in full training next week, and as he has told the Pompey site he is targeting the FA cup game with his former club Preston as his comeback date: 'the operation went well. I came back last Wednesday night and had a few days off before starting my rehab on Monday.

'The injury had been niggling me for a while but it got worse and worse and after a while the pain was too much, so I had to do something about it.

'It's frustrating but that's part of football - you get injuries.

'I want to be back training with the lads soon and hopefully I'll be travelling up with them when we play Preston'.

With Jermain Defoe cup tied and Kanu likely to still be out injury Nugent would have a decent chance of starting that game if fit, and even if it is a bit 'sentimental' for the reasons it is Preston I would hope he will.

Again Nugent has been honest in his assessment that his career so far has not been that great, but he is looking to start again and finally put things right: 'I haven't had the best of times here so far but I'm sure that one of these days the luck will go my way and I can start scoring a few goals'.

A slice of luck, which he has had none of really could ignite his Pompey career, he just needs the dice to role for him.

The hernia problem might not have done him many favours before the operation, but he now has a fresh start and although I have always backed him - admittedly I wavered slightly - I am backing him even more now, as I still think that he will be a fantastic footballer for club and country.

Despite the arrivals of Defoe and Milan Baros - as well as other being here already - I still think in the long term Nugent has a very big part to play in our future and could feature up front with either of the two mentioned strikers, and with success...

Fit for the bench at best. No doubt if we play 442, Barros & Utaka may lead the front?

Go for it Nuge! A couple against your old team would be sweet. After all he's going to have his work cut out even more now to get into the side.

Yes lets just hope the lad gets fit again and that at least gives us another option up front, should we get injuries or suspensions etc. He is a good player and although he hasn't proved himself at this level, once a goal scorer always a goal scorer in my book. He will get a break one day and then as Benji did he will go on and bag a hat full. Just hope its in a Pompey shirt.

if fit enough i reckon nuge will start that game - 'arry doesnt have much sentimentaility but even he will bow to this and let him start against his old team... so long as he is fit!

Maybe starting that game would get the monkey off his back. I sure hope so, cos it's an enormous monkey.

Not sure Utaka will lead the line against Preston Matt but I think we might see him start to get deployed up front rather than on the wing.. especially now Harry has option to play 442 rather than 451.. would like to see Nuge start against Preston score a couple and bury any ghosts... You never know he might turn out to be a Trebilcock and score in the final desite hardly playing during the seasson... now wouldn't that be good !!
