'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Defoe on debut goal (AUDIO)

Well even though it seems there are a few i's to dot and t's to cross still on Jermaine Defoe's full debut, the striker didn't let it show.

After a quiet first half the striker, now called up to the England squad after initially being left out of Fabio Capello's 30 man provisional squad, pounced in typical fashion to level Nicolas Anelka's classy opener at Fratton Park.

Much has been reported of the dependency of Defoe's reported £9m move on Benjani's exit to Eastlands, an issue likely to be resolved this week despite the closure of the transfer window. Sven Goran Eriksson still maintains he wants the player even with, technically, no time left for incoming players until the summer.

However Defoe is ignoring the rumours and, speaking in his post-match interview following the Chelsea match, says he's absoluted thrilled to get off the mark on his debut. The 25-year old knows all about netting on debut having scored AGAINST Pompey 4 years ago for Tottenham in a thrilling 4-3 clash.

Nice one JD... saying all the right things...

When is a transfer not a transfer? Man City decided they don't want Benji after the deal is done and Defoe is a loan only after everyone said he is a permanent signing. This transfer system need a major overhaul. I hope the Defoe deal goes through and Benji comes backtoPompey and Sasha gets another overdraft from the bank.

Was at the game on Sat and thought Defoe looked class considering he had not played with the players before. Took his goal well too. Diarra was also class and though Niko played better with Diarra there. Lets get the transfer sorted today so we can all push on forward!

I've got to agree with that mate - this needs to be sorted, clearly defoe wants to be here and altho benji i think still wants to be here also, i think he has accepted that he had to go - right or wrong... but if citeh are trying to screw us over they should be told to stuff it... it has dragged on far too long tho hasnt it and its time things were sorted once and for all.

With Defoe, Benji, Baros and Nugent and Utaka (yes I'm confident-hopeful they both will come good) as our main strikeforce and Kranjcar, Muntari and Diarra backing them it would be an awsome combination. I hope the transfers are sorted out but with Benji coming back our way.

HR has given his strongest indication yet that Kanu wont be in the starting line up. He has stated that Defoe and Baros struck up an instant partnership - no mention of Kanu coming back into the line up.
