Defoe handed England call up

Defoe handed England call up

As I had predicted earlier today - eastneydave can vouch for this, as I think he saw the comment? - Jermain Defoe has received an England call up.

He had originally been omitted from the 30 man squad, but after injuries to Emile Heskey yesterday and Gabriel Agbonlahor today after an impressive debut Defoe has this evening got the call from Fabio Capello to meet up with the squad ahead of the friendly with Switzerland this week.

It is a thought that his non-selection for this 30 man squad in the first place might have been 'the straw that broke the camels back' and convinced him to leave Spurs in the first place?

Sadly Glen Johnson was yesterday cut from the 30 man squad and did not make it into the final 23.

The 'trimming' of the squad is something that some people are questioning. The argument is that this could have a negative effect on the players cut, and maybe he should have just chosen a squad as normal, but on the other hand another argument is that even the ones cut know that they are well and truly in Capello's thoughts...

is this bad news? I mean perhaps he thinks that now hes back in, he can go back to tottenham, since hes on loan, I wish benji had gone on midnight, it would leave such a bitter taste, if defoe left at the end of season, when weve waited for him for years literally, and only have him for a few games. : (

how can it be bad new gleams? mate defoe is now our player - 'if' the benjani deal does fall through, then we will just have him on loan until the summer - but he wont be able to play against spurs - then sign him when we have the funds then... we have an agreement in place and i very much doubt - even with the screw ups we have made in the past - we will let defoe get away again now that we have him... i think he has already said too much to go back to spurs anyway tbh?

1. Yes Rug you did predict this earlier and 2. It is good news because he played and scored for Pompey yesterday had he still been at Spurs he would not have played and who knows. 3. It is bad news as it robs him of precious time on the training ground with Milan Baros particularly and the midfield in general.

Back in the squad is great but if he plays & as he is on 'loan' is he classed a Pompey or Spurs player?

my understanding is JD is registered as a pompey player, tbh i think Capello changed his policy partly because down to injuries he had no real alternative. I think it is an excellent outcome for both JD and the club, capello told him (JD) he needed to go somewhere and get starts, JD listened and he has done that, and now through good fortune he has his england place back, why would he go back to spurs and risk it all again when he knows the OKI shirt is no bar. Moving to pompey got him his place back and we will get a striker full of confidence, the club gets more much needed positive notoriety and the club will now find it easier to find other players to sign. Unlucky for GJ but he will get his chance i am sure.

Lets hope we sign Defoe permanently this week. By the end of the season the fee will be 12 million and we won't be able to afford him.

You never know what's been written in the loan contract so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist unless things are confirmed.

why would he do that though kaybee? in all fairness if someone isnt playing regularly for their club their is no way they 'should' play for their country - defoe was no execption, he has come here and in just 90 minutes been given a chance, granted by some fortune, the misfortune of others...
