HR on Diarra, Defoe and the game

HR on Diarra, Defoe and the game

Once again Lassana Diarra was absolutely fantastic for Pompey when he put in another dazzling display against his former side in our draw yesterday, and Harry Redknapp was quick to pay tribute to him on sky sports: 'the little fella in midfield was magnificent.

'Makelele's a great player, but he can be better.

'He will be a top, top, top player, there's no doubt about that'.

The fella certainly is something else - as I have previously said the better he does the harder it will be to keep hold of him but at the same time the better he does the better we 'should' do ourselves. I would think that we 'must' get into Europe next season for him to be here at the start of the 2008/09 season...

After tracking his young protégé Jermain Defoe for so long Redknapp was finally able to secure the signing of the fella on deadline day and he was pleased with his debut and the goal he scored: 'it's great for him to start with a goal.

'In all honesty he could have won the game for us today, but he's not had a lot of football recently.

'He's a fantastic young player. He's been scoring goals since I've known him since 15'.

Defoe is a goalscorer and in 90 minutes he has probably shown enough to convince that he could score a bag full of goals for us... but did we not think this anyway?

As far as the game goes Redknapp thought it was a good game and 'a good advert' for the league but stopped short of saying we got what we deserved: 'we did well. All round it was a good performance. It was a terrific game.

'We kept slugging away and they kept hitting us on the break. It was a good advert for the Premier League today'.

Had we come away from the game empty handed it would have been criminal as we had arguably done enough in the 2 games against Chelsea this season to have got all 6, let alone the solitary 1 point we have - had we ended up with none it would have been more than unjust.

I doubt many other teams will be able to boast an unbeaten record at home again 'the big 4' come May...

Players like this just make us so proud to be all things Pompey. Long may it continue. Top class players brought here by a top class manager.

Diarra and Defoe (and some others) are already showing us what top class premiership players can do... Just think we are raving about them (and quite rightly) but, .. It just goes to should the quality we are getting. Defoe and Diarra (and Baros come to that) struck up a great understanding yesterday and they had only played in one training session together before that... Imagine what they are going to be like once they train together on a regular basis... With the last three signings Pompey are entering a new age of intelligence.... the 3 of them together with Niko and Muntari (and I'll also include Distin .. and maybe Johnson) are not just good players they are clever players... thinkers of the game... It is really gonna show in the next few weeks and we are going wipe the floor with a few of the 'pretenders' I'm sure... before the transfer window I thought we'd struggle with the games coming up against Villa, Everton & Man Citeh... not now... based on yesterdays performance they should be worrying about us ....... If we can click quickly Europe is there for the taking..

Been a real rollercoaster season for HR. England job, Newcastle, being arrested and of course Benjanigate. Add to that our away run and the home drought. But at last he can get down to managing a team which has the players he wants and turn them into a top side. Yes Europe should be there for the taking if we continue like yesterday.

I just want to say that yesterday was one of the best games Ive been to for a very long time, I dont know how you guys felt but the atmosphere was electric, Fratton felt like Fratton again & put a massive smile on my ugly face for the rest of the day...yesterday reminded me why im a pompey fan & why I love the club so much, just a fantastic day!!!!......This may not come as a shock now, but Diarra, in my humble opinion, is by a mile the best player on our books...I mean this guy is seriously good. When Harry said he was one of the best midfielders in the prem I took a step back....but my god he can really really play.......but, my man of the match was the whole team!!!!! I love this game!

I agree CC, Diarra is an awsome player and will set the tone for the rest of the team. I said before, I can't see us losing for the rest of the season. Diarra would walk into any prem team!

Chrlie I've done the same and agree too ... I was worried about Everton, Villa and City before the transfer window... but not now.... On the atmosphere point... I had goose bumps on my neck when we sang 'he didn't want to go, but now we've got Defoe... Ben..Jani....Every part of Fratton rocked yesterday, the North Stand were on their feet and the South Stand all joined in ..... The just to spoil it all we were reminded that "Fratton Park is an all seater venue, and those not complying will be ejected".... I would have liked to have seen them trying to eject 17,000 Pompey fans ... All in all brilliant... I'm still high now and it's Sunday Lunchtime !... time for a Stella I think...

I agree with you all. I can't imagine how my brother and I sound in the South Stand Upper though - we basically sing for them.

I thought it was one of the best performances I've ever seen by a Portsmouth team. We'll do really well to keep a hold of Muntari, Diarra and Kranjcar in the summer. I can't believe we've got Diarra and that is down to one man - Harry Redknapp.

Evans - Right back or right midfield?

Drew Talbot and Adam Buxton are fit but Gareth Evans continues to fill in at right back. Should this change? If so where would it leave the battle between Evans and Carl Baker?
