James and Johnson in England squad

With all the activity, talk and the 'will they will they not transfer dealings' involving Jermaine Defoe arriving and Benjani going go through - which as we now know involved him signing and him staying - the announcement of Fabio Capello's 1st England squad for the friendly with Switzerland next week was overlooked slightly, but this contained 2 Pompey players.

This 30 man squad - which will be cut to 23 tomorrow - includes both David James and Glen Johnson, and both will be hoping that they avoid the cut... well James is a nailed on certainty to remain as only 3 keepers have been named, and he has to beat Scott Carson and the recalled Chris Kirkland to regain the no.1 spot.

David Beckham has been left out but former Pompey target Curtis Davies - now at Villa - has got the nod, along with his Villa teammate Gabriel Agbonlahor. This is the 30 man squad in full:

David James, Scott Carson, Chris Kirkland

Wayne Bridge, Ashley Cole, Curtis Davies, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, Nicky Shorey, Wes Brown, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, Matthew Upson, Jonathan Woodgate

Michael Carrick, Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard, Jermaine Jenas, Owen Hargreaves, Joe Cole, Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Bentley

Gabriel Agbonlahor, Peter Crouch, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Emile Heskey.

Good call naming Johnson; no Sol Campbell though. Is this the beginning of the end of his England career?

tbh i think that maybe sol's career full stop is coming to an end? i know all players have bad spells but his dip in form has been a huge dip... i hope i am proved wrong with sol, i really do

im delighted that johnson has been called up, even if he gets cut from the 30 at least he is in the running... jamo will surely become england no.1 again now - wont he?

bravo Glen Johnson - I always had faith in him!

Great news about Johnson and Jamo. Sol is running on empty and that may well be the end for his England career. What a night last night was. Defoe and Benjani would seem a great partnership, but how must Benjani feel now...And what about the club's finances???

GJ is maturing, a few England caps will no doubt alert Man U who are looking to replace Gary Neville. 10m & he may be off in the summer.

Well I didn't but since he came back he's been terrific and deserves his call up. As Pompey fans, it's hard to believe the quality of our squad these days and if Germ Defoe gets his bottom in gear he will be back in the team - just imagine an England team containing 3 Pompey players! (not including Nuge) Unbelievable 3 years ago, let alone 5. Hopefully Cappello is not agist and Jamo gets to be No. 1 which is only fair.

Sorry should have read 'Well I didn't have faith in him'.

I'm sad for Sol, he does seem to have been found out these days. I thought Distin would take the difficult attackers and leave the easy one's to Sol but I'm not sure that's happening. Still worth having in the starting line-up though.

Delighted for both of them. Not sure if GJ will make the final line up or start this time - but its looking good for the future for him. I think Jamo will start. Sol is very important to Pompey, but I do think his international days may be coming to an end. Once Defoe starts scoring regularly that'll be 3 regular England players then!

this england call up will no doubt raise his price and interest, teams will be bidding in for him in the future, hopefully we make a nice chunk of change for him

getting money would be great, but dont we want to hold on to the ever improving youngsters in our side?

we do NOT want to be selling him. we should NOT be a selling club, and should NOT seel players when they are playing at the peak of there abilities (well, unless that peak isnt good enough). In the same way benji should NOT be sold, GJ should NOT be sold.

Both of them deserve their place in the squad, well done boys it reflects the great job that they have done for us this year and in past performances.

Curtis Davis, no way he must be there to ensure the loan of the Villa team bus or something like that.

Has Capello only watched Villa or something? Shame about Sol but there are a lot of Central Defenders in the squad. It would be a shame for such a distinguished international career to end on such a sad note as Croatia at Wembley.

In a Nutshell....... james must be Englands no1 now..... Johnson will be cut but feature again very soon I'm sure...... Sol... We'll never see in an England shirt again....... But the futures bright and there's Defoe and maybe (but a long way off at present Nugent looking over the horizon)
