Benjani STILL a Pompey player...

The proposed transfer of Benjani to Man City has not gone through after all according to the Man City Site!

A City spokesman - Paul Tyrrell - said: 'due to the late arrival of the player in Manchester we were unable to complete the transfer'.

So not only did we sign Jermaine Defoe we also kept Benjani.

This could not have been some ploy to keep Benjani and get Defoe as well - surely not? - as Harry Redknapp had been speaking to sky sports news shortly after the Defoe deal was confirmed, and he said: 'It's a good move [for Benjani] and we've more than doubled our money.

'It's great business'.

Someone has made a balls up somewhere, but this has worked in our favour, although it will be interesting to see what sort of reaction we get from Benjani as it will not be easy coming back to Pompey and having to look Redknapp in the eye knowing that he was happy to sell him...

What price Benjani starting up front alongside Defoe this weekend though fellas...

i had gone to bed, was about to turn my phone off and jbaker text me to say the deal hadnt gone through - i couldnt believe it, im chuffed, but it'll be alittle 'awkward' at training tomorrow wont it... surely this wasnt arranged to happen like this...
pompeyrug
Don't want to put a dampner on things but every where i've seen Harry quoted he's said the Defoe deal was dependent on Benji going, we may not have heard the last of this yet.
Steve C
I can't see it being awkward though because he's got such a great relationship with everyone at FP. Very, very, interesting and our team is even stronger even if we are seriously IN DEBT. Oooh bloody errrr.
stillthewhizz
this is the best news of the year! i doubt benji will make it to trainig in the morn, as he had a medical around midnight (we should even allow the best of players some sleep). talking of sleep, id better retire for the night/morn, and im expecting some happy fans!
jbaker
Yeah i've got a funny feeling there's some kind of cancellation period. Another headline grabbing saga bought to you by Portsmouth Football Club.
stillthewhizz
as i said to jbaker we'll just have to make sure that we get into europe to wipe this debt out, defoe, baros, benji, nuge, utaka and kanu between them 'should' make this happen - shouldnt they...
pompeyrug
surely we wont back out of the defoe deal will we? the way i see it if sacha has money why couldnt this have happend in the 1st place... just imagine if defoe had to go back to spurs after what he's been saying....
pompeyrug
we might not even have to play kanu (unless he proves he can run) which could be good. finally harry has his man, and to no expense (as of yet). perhaps benji not going meant we couldnt afford spiderman?
jbaker
I don't think Sasha will get any sleep tonight.. after all he's the one who has to come up with the money..
Mighty_Pompey
he can just ask his dad for some cant he... oops, he doesnt do that ;-)
pompeyrug
welcome to vital pompey Mighty_Pompey by the way...
pompeyrug
Thanks PompeyRug..
Mighty_Pompey
I've seen the pictures on the Official Pompey site of Defoe, we can't be backing out now. What a fine mess. I need to go to bed this is ridiculous.
stillthewhizz
yep, im going back to bed again now - hopefully when i wake up in the morning its not to bad news...
pompeyrug
Great news if it is correct. If it is correct someone will have a sore backside tomorrow for the stuff up. I just don't understand that so many reports came in that Benji was having his first medical in the late moring and his second around 4pm and that he was already at MAN CITY ground. Everyone knew the timetable. How did it go wrong - unless it was deliberate and HR never intended Benji to go it the first place and it was arranged just to get Defoe. I am not saying HR would be that devious, no never...lol
frattonaussie
Benji obviously was not in Manchester during the afternoon. From what we can see he arrived around 11pm, the medical needed to be thorough, and they missed out. Defoe has officially signed so we've got him. And Sacha's going to have find an extra 9 million from the Bank ! I actually think Harry will warmly welcome Benji back but also let him know that he can't guarantee him first team action ..... except in the Cups !
StuartM
I'm thinking a midfield diamond, with Muntari on the right, Diarra in the middle, Krunchie on the left, Benji at the front with Baros & Defoe as the pure strikers. Wow.
Toronto4Pompey
LOL. I find this story so funny. Although it's gotta be a good thing for Pompey. I know many on the vital Spurs site were hoping that this would scupper the Defoe deal. No such luck. :) Good luck to you.
spurjon
I read that he stayed in Manchester after the United game, should Defoe return to WHL he will find one hell of a big padlock on the gates and a Brazillian's car in his parking spot. Hope Sashas piggybank is full or maybe it will be a whip round at your next home game, 18,000 fans @ 500 quid each should do it.
TergeHauge
You must be delighted, why you would want to lose Benjani for Defoe was a mystery in all honesty. Could this see Baros going back to what ever stone he crawled out from under?
col8
Latest rumour, and I stress just a rumour, is that Benji didn't want to leave Pompey so he got himself "lost" on the way to the final medical. Whatever the truthis I say well done Benji and welcome "back".
frattonaussie
OH MY GOD.... RIG DO I GET PREDICTION POINTS FOR THIS!! THIS IS WHAT I POSTED ON THE DEFOE THREAD ABOUT 7PM LAST NIGHT! Umm so he's (Defoe) coming then .. that'll probably spark the merry-go-round with Benji signing once Defoe is announced but if he's hangiing on for a big club .. maybe they'll be no time for Benji to go ..Imagine fax arrives at Eastlands @ 00:01 saying ok then.. whoops too late .. We have Defoe and keep Benjani.. Chix BRING IT ON - I NEVER THOUGHT WE'D END UP WITH BENJANI, BAROS & DEFOE ... SATURDAY IS GOING TO BE INTERESTING.... OH MY GOD!!
Chix
Happy Birthday & Chritsmas. Great to have both, fckin amazing. Let's hope Sasha isn't too upset.
storagematt
Crackin result! Deligted to have both.
wakey
Who? what? When? Christ I go to bed and it all happens!
paultsmouth
frattonaussie...i have a feeling you could be right about that one ;-) (although i wouldnt actualy put it past harry to have been the one to suggest it!!!) its great news in footballing terms, and hopefully it will just be "spend less over the summer now" - not "sell benji over the summer". Will be awquard in training, unless harry had something to do with the benji not making it, but hey, give him a good reception at FP, and all will be forgoten. Play Up Benjani!!!
pompeycarpet
Apparently it was flight delays, God bless airport security! Defoe was only 7m and we were getting 9 for Benj!
paultsmouth
Chelsea don't stand a chance on Saturday - stand by for bogey exorsism. At the moment I can't see us losing for the rest of the season. Europe: bring it on!
Et_tu_Pompeii
I'm off to work a happy bunny!
paultsmouth
I reckon that Benji was the way of keeping spurs in the real world on Defoe's price. You know, cant pay more, funded by Benjani sale, etc etc etc. Don't reckon Harry had intended to sell ?????????
wakey
what shirt number is defoe gettin???
Gleams
Wow; I went to bed a bit depressed but wishing Benji all the luck for the future. Now I find that we still have him AND we've got Defoe. Conspiracy theories abound, but I bet they both start tomorrow. Chelski watch out!
UKTony
Aha!!! The perfect outcome!! Maybe not for Mr Gaydamak who will have to wait until the summer to get some mullah back in his pockets, but to have Benji AND Defoe is fantastic for now!
Tantona
I wonder what Baros is thinking this morning.... or Nugent come to that !! ... If 7m is wgat we oaid for Defoe.. it makes the Nugent fee look a bit out of sorts ...either we paid to much for Nuge or we got Defoe for a snip... Sachas gonna have a big overdraft this morning
Chix
This isn"nt the last you will hear on this story, just seen an asda lorry turn up at fratton park with a delivery of bread and water driver said it was for the players lounge, god times must be hard.lol. if pompey dont get to europe i think there will be some high profile players leaving in the summer
pompeyjas
Nice one Jas .. We can no excuses about having no firepower now.. and we still have Benjani who can play in the FA Cup whereas Defoe couldn't because he is cup tied... Happy, but expensive, days ahead I reckon..
Chix
this is pompey and you just know that something will bite us on the arse, when do things like this ever go right
pompeyjas
Yeah you're probably right Jas.. but for the time being I've got a smile as wide as a Cheshire Cats and I'm going to enjoy it mate.. Welcome to the site too not seen you beofre (but not been around myself that much in last couple of days). Hope you enjoy Vital Pompey .. it's by far the best Pompey site on the interweb .
Chix
Arrrrrghhhh that bloody Sky Sports News intense music is ringing around my head still. It's poisonous.

Just waiting for the Pompey camp to speak up now. Sven must be *****ed.
stillthewhizz
Who delayed the plane that Eastleigh Airport? What were those storage crates doing on the runway? Good news but leaves a big financial whole in the clubs finances.
eastneydave
i honestly dont think that benji wanted to go, but surely this wasnt a 'ploy' for him not to go, he wouldnt have delayed - and even more 'surely' - 'arry wouldnt have been a part of it... 'arry must be in his eliment now, he has plenty of strikers to choice from, my own choice would still be benji and a n other - almost certainly defoe - what a partnerhsip that'll be, but also think defoe and nuge could work in the long term - i bet baros is a bit *****ed off, but maybe not as much as sacha!
pompeyrug
i still cant believe it, i went to bed with tears in my eyes - but then jbakers late text made these turn to tears of joy... i just pray this hasnt landed us in grave financial trouble...
pompeyrug
We now have the England goalkeeper, a solid back four, two quality international strikers BUT it is in midfield where we have our strength. Happy days eh!!
eastneydave
Surely benji can still be loaned out to city for the rest of the season, - and then they will buy him at the end minus the wages they have already paid.

Don't want to put a downer on it but thats what I see happening.
sneakay
the deadline has gone tho hasnt it - we had already asked the fa for some leeway on the defoe deal apparently but we were told 'its midnight' apparently all premier league clubs were told no exceptions would be made... we 'could' in theory still loan him to a championship side, as they can loan players for a while longer i think...
pompeyrug
Sorry to cut and paste and to repeat what is elsewhere but: The Premier League are to examine the paperwork over the proposed transfer of Portsmouth's Benjani Mwaruwari to Manchester City. It had been thought the deal was off after City failed to complete the signing of the Zimbabwe striker on transfer deadline day. City stated that due to the player's late arrival into Manchester on Thursday they did not have enough time to seal the deal. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp was confident of the deal going through following their capture of Spurs' Jermain Defoe. Despite initially appearing as though Benjani would be staying at Fratton Park, it now seems the Premier League could yet allow the deal.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Fantastic news for you Pompey. I bet Nugent feels a bit sick now?
will it ever happen
yeah loans can be made to championship sides or worse. but why loan benji? the only reason we were selling him is for the money.
jbaker
