Benjani undergoing City medical?

It is being reporting that Benjani is undergoing a medical with Man City ahead of a proposed move away from Pompey...

Harry Redknapp has said that players will only be sold if others arrive, and L'Equipe have been reporting that Jermain Defoe will today finally seal a move to Pompey - so it could add up?

To say I would be devastated if Benjani left Pompey would be an understatement. As sad as I was when Gary O'Neil and Matty Taylor left, just the thought of us selling the fella leave me - and I will openly admit - close to tears...

All this is currently 'speculation' but it is gathering momentum, and as I said at the start of the day my worst fears were that Benjani might be sold - and it looks as though he might?

Benjani for Lazy git Defoe is not a good deal. Kanoute AND Benjani, now I'd like that.
Et_tu_Pompeii
its a ******** disgrace, sorry but defoe is overrated! HE hasnt played in ages, pointless, and selling him to european rivals city of all clubs, and for 6 million!! Stupid!!!!!!!!!
Gleams
The worst case scenario id Baros is in to replace Benji & no one else turns up! Though it will sad to lose Benji, he is probably at his peak for selling. At 29 & what 2 & a bit years on his contract, it does make some sense providing we get another striker in. If Sasha is selling to balance his books it's bad for us.
storagematt
if he stays, his heart wont be in the team anymore. ridiculus harry, what have you done!
Gleams
I really hope these reports are rubbish - it would be a terrible move if we let Benji go. I'd be devastated too! First Sacha's reported to be selling, then our top scorer is reported to be leaving - this is a stressful day!
tracyc
baros?? hes rubbish, i saw the game at old trafford, and his antics trying to win a pen, you dont see benji do that, milan is lazy, and wont ever fill half the committment benj puts in!
Gleams
Eurosport are reporting that Benjani's having a medical at Spuds, not City
yellowcheesemonkey
if sasha sells, we could get anyone, and american??? with the same ambition as hicks?? or an asian like the city guy. splashing money on anyone, no, we need sascha, and we need benji!
Gleams
spurs? that would nail on the head mean that defoe is coming, woopedo.
Gleams
that would be hideous aswell, they dont need him, he will become a bit part player there, this is stupid, im happy with the squad, why does harry think that he needs a goalscorer, we have one BENJANI!
Gleams
Another kick in the teeth in a day of a life being a Pompey fan.
pompey4me
more like a bullet to the head, suicidal if we lose him, in more ways then one.
Gleams
Oh Shut Up Gleams for god sake. You are not the Owner, you are Not the Manager, They know what they are doing. How many Said OH NO NOT Kanau... OH NO NOT Glen Johnson, yet on both accounts Harry waas right. He would not Sell Benji without reason, and i agree with StorageMatt it all adds up. He is 29, he is at his prime, he is already thinking about going home, so thanks for everything Benji, we WILL Miss you, but life goes on.
Midge
It's being reported on the Sky website now. Like I always say, I admire Arry tremendously as I'm sure most of us do, but at times he has a frustrating tendency to do whatever stubborn idea that's in his head, regardless of the cost. You see it in games when he won't change tactics even though conventional wisdom says he should - you see it in moves like this, where he may well give up the second highest scorer in the league to get back a lazy n'ere do well like Defoe whose potential he has obsessed about since West Ham. It's one hell of a gamble. Think he's got this one way wrong, but, he's the gaffer I guess.
Toronto4Pompey
I agree with you lot, i dont want to see Benji go either, i am not trying to be Anti Benji etc, but you said it Toronto. Potential, and Harry does have a way of developing potential into Legend, look at Glen Johnson and Sean Davis, they are BOTH 200% better than when they arrived. So dont lose sleep, as you also say he is the gaffer. remember he turned Newcastle down to stay here, so there is no way he going to make decisions that could jeopodise his future/job. Trust him, he knows what he is doing and why...
Midge
Hope you're right Midge. Just hope if the rumour is true, Defoe leaves his gnashing pigmy routine at White Heart Lane and comes her to play and not whine.
Toronto4Pompey
i'll be almost heartbroken to see benji go but 'arry must have one - or both, which is unlikely - of his long term targets waiting in the wins in defoe and/or crouchy... anyone else arriving in my opinion just wouldnt be good enough to justify selling benji...
pompeyrug
Good point Rug. Either that or the money will be spent to land both Defoe and Gutierrez (would way rather have Crouch than the gnashing pygmy though).
Toronto4Pompey
Well I would never have guessed this one, major mistake letting Benji go. If Sascha wants to fill his piggy bank before leaving he should think about saving the wage cost of that lazy arse Campbell.
bluedr
Be good to see anyone with a decent first touch up front to be honest - we were pretty poor last night in this area - Baros is certainly going to take time to come up to premier league standards again. It did leave me thinking that perhaps we should deploy crunchie as an out and out striker though....
WalshWasGod
Not got enough pace for that tho WWG, has he? (Krunchie)
pompey4me
But then again.....kanu....pace.
pompey4me
Rather have Bent from Spuds -at his best in a4-5-1 -better than that prima donna Defoe
yellowcheesemonkey
defoe over bent any day of the week for me, and this is not becuase i am a 'defoist'...
pompeyrug
this is on the sky website: Patrick Berger has just completed his medical for Portsmouth. No hitches over personal terms. Jerome Thomas is booked in for 1300 and another for 1600 and it's rumoured to be Crouch. Will let you know if there are any others but it is doubtful as Storrie is doing all the deals. Can anyone confirm or deny any of it?
WalshWasGod
Which web site WWG? transfer centre has none of it, portsmouthfc web site is down (convienient!) Had to take the afternoon off to be near my pc!
pompey4me
nothing on the official pompey site - which is the one that counts, i cant see anything either... sorry fellas but i have to go to work in abit so anything that happens will have to be caught up with later - altho pautsmouth should pick up the reigns when he get in from work...
pompeyrug
Every rumour I've read say we're after Defoe rather than Crouch....PLEASE, let it be Crouch
Toronto4Pompey
That's a shocking price for a player of his goal scoring ability
JonLFC
I'd love us to sign Defoe but he's denied us so many times why now when his future looks brighter under Ramos? I'll be completely gutted to see Benjani go - of all of squad Benjani would be the fans favourite and especially as he declared the rest of his top footballing career here. Usually when medicals are reported though it's the truth.
stillthewhizz
I know what they're up to - they start off with a rumour that the whole club is being sold - we all gasp in horror - then they say 'no its OK we're not selling the whole club, only Benji' so we're all supposed to heave a big sigh of relief and go 'oh thats OK then, phew!' Not me, I won't be happy with Benji going whoever comes in. (Unless its Ronaldo).
tracyc
Yep tracyc, me too. It doesnt matter to me who owns the club, but Benji is one i really dont want to see go, first GON, then Matty now this.
pompey4me
Tracey your doing a man impression. Your not thinking with your brain, only with whats hidden inside your pants. lol
Midge
felt gutted when i read the story but if we get defoe playing like he can then maybe it's a good deal. not so good for cup run as i think defoe has played for spurs in the cup!
knocker
james and johnson in england squad!
knocker
More importantly - this doesn't half ruin the calander this year! With Matty gone and Benji going that is both Feb and March that have players that have gone! Lucky enough my Spuds work colleague has JD as his Jan player, so I will cut him out, put him in a pompey shirt and add him to one of the pages if he joins. He will fit nicely next to Benji in March. On a more sensible note. I think we will all miss the work rate of Benji, but I am not too sure I will miss his finishing.

Breaking News -Pompey & Spurs agree Defoe fee -on Beeb site now
yellowcheesemonkey
NOOOOoooooooo! !!
Toronto4Pompey
The Mail says the clubs have agreed to a fee, now all Defoe has to decide is whether he wants to come here. Great. We give up a guy with a top notch attitude for an overrated sulking pygmy. This just *****es me off.
Toronto4Pompey
Sorry midge, i was overeacting, but I think that benji does a better job then milan and defoe, hope I am proving wrong.
Gleams
I DO NOT WANT BENJANI TO GO, but here s the devils advocate argument. Benjani has scored two hatricks, and one brace I think. That means he has scored 8 of his 12 goals in three games. That means he has scored the other 4 goals in 4 games meaning he has scored in just 7 out of 24 matches. Does this really reflect a prolific player? Would we have more points if we had someone who had scored 8 winning goals in 8 1-0 victories? Yep! Is Benji as prolific as he is made out to be, or has he just had a couple of lucky breaks?? That said, with devils hat off, I dont want him sold, cannot believe we are looking at selling for the same sort of cash we spent on David wheres the goal nugent. And I do not personally rate Baros, or Defoe. Dont know about this guiterriez or whatever. Please dont let this be a mistake. Now Harry make me eat my words!
wakey
Benji only goes if Defoe signs.
storagematt
Yeah, that may be so, but is it a good deal anyway? What is defoe's scoring record REALLY like? What is his attitude like? Does he work in midfield and defence when backs against the wall etc??
wakey
Boooooooo
pompey4me
All you need ask is why he's number 3 at Spurs...nuff said.
Toronto4Pompey
Yeah matt like I said in my topic earlier we're only buying if we can sell. It would be such a shame to see Benj go because although he's not prolific he works so bloody damn hard. Benjani and Defoe would be a dream partnership but Nugent's injury I believe has ruined Harry's plans.

More importantly he's the fans favourite and I shall forever cherish the memory of singing his name in the stands, getting the opportunity to meet him and singing his name whilst on holiday in South Africa with some African Benjani fans. Benjani is the heart of this current team.
stillthewhizz
So if we sign Defoe are we all going to give him a hard time?
storagematt
He's a fag if he leaves. Hasn't done much before this season, and suddenly when he starts playing well he wants to leave. But hopefully he'll stay at Pompey 'cos it's Arsenal's retirement home. :P
Thing
Who matt, 'arry or Defoe? I wont give Defoe a hard time, but I'd like to let 'arry know that I wouldnt have sold benji.
pompey4me
Defoe is **** in the air but on his feet and with the ball he's pretty sound. My mate is a Spurs fan and he's gutted that Defoe could be leaving. I know he's third choice but he's behind Berbatov and Keane who are both absolutely outstanding.
stillthewhizz
Benji = 166 league games with 39 goals which is 1 in every 4.25

Defoe = 249 league games with 90 goals which is 1 in every 2.77
sneakay
If he scores a bunch of goals and ditches the sulking gnasher pygmy persona, then no matt, we won't give him a hard time. On the other hand.....
Toronto4Pompey
sneakay, that stat doesnt cover team play and assists tho.
pompey4me
I won't be giving Harry or Defoe a hard time. Why should we? They're doing their job and in Harry's case - he's doing a top job trying to get us to play with the big boys. It the long term it's an amazing deal for us but right at this moment it's understandable that we should feel upset to be losing our favourite child.
stillthewhizz
defoe is an amzing player, but to lose someone who tries his heart out every single game is stupid. benjani tries every game, no matter what the score is. when the players arent giving him the ball, he goes searching for it. the only other players that did this for us were matt taylor and gary o'neil. and how much did we turn down for benji from juventus earlier in the season? and to get a combined value of 10.5m for benji gary and matty, when we spend 14 on nugent and utaka put together is bloody ridiculous. we dont have any other try-ers. if it wasnt for benji we would have lost against derby. we need benji, especially when we would now have defoe and baros up front, two unproven people who havent been able to hold down places at better clubs, and havent had a good scoring record anywhere. i would love defoe, but at the moment, id prefer to keep benjani. full stop.
jbaker
The point is he's number 3 at Spurs. Are we angling to be as good or better than Spurs ? If so, why are we not getting a striker who would be a number 1 or 2 over there ? It isn't likely that Martin Jol and Ramos are both wrong about him is it.
Toronto4Pompey
*********** ************ ************** - benji had better not leave! that would be truly miserable! i dont honsetly care about his goalscorring - which isnt great - its what he does for the team which is importnt, and t sell him when he is the 4th best player in the league is ridduclas! and for 6 million?!?!?!? no, he had better not leave. in fact, if he leaves, i go on strike! no, he doesnt want to leave, but if harry ccepts a bid for him, then how much choice does he have? oh, and midge - you said "He is 29, he is at his prime" - but that is exactly why we SHOULDNT sell him. we want players that are in there prime, and playing well, not "ones fo the future" and "has beens" - we want the best players we can get. dont ************ sell him!
pompeycarpet
and defoe is &%$£%$£ lazy, and think i have made my opinion of him pretty well known, so i would be extrmely upset to loose benji, and get defoe. no, scrap that, i would have seriosu trouble keeping my mind of it! please please please dont sell benji!
pompeycarpet
I disagree with you guys on Defoe. He is proven, he is a goalscorer and he is a great finisher. But why would Spurs play him when Keane is their team captain, a hero and his skills are outstanding? As well as Berbatov who would easily grace any team in the top 4. Being third choice doesn't mean you're a bad player, for most of the season a lot of you have been telling me how good Nugent is…

As for Baros. You don't get much more proven than being a Golden Boot winner as well as being one of the main reasons your team lifted the Champions League. He played under a ***** team at Villa and was sold when O'Neill came in with his ideas. He was also sold by Liverpool because Benitez came in and wanted to fund other deals to get them winning the Premiership. And look they're still trying…
stillthewhizz
Who is going to lead us to cup glory if Banjani goes? Nugent has only scored against the small boys and has not shown any potential against Premier teams. Kanu cannot be relied upon to more than play a bit part really, Baros has yet to prove himself as capable of scoring regularly now. ????????????????????????????????????????
wakey
OOOPPPSS Forgive the spelling in my last post!
wakey
defoe, it is true, is a prooven goal scorrer. unfortunatly, i dont think he is 3rd choice, and he has insisted on staying at spurs when he could move to a club of equal stature, AND get first team football. he is, in short, lazy. Benji is complety the opposite, and without matty and gary, who else is going to run at there team?
pompeycarpet
True. Benj defends from the front and I love that. This all hinges on Defoe making his decision. There's no other reason for a stupidly long medical.
stillthewhizz
All this doom and gloom reminds me of the last transfer deadline day when lots of peope were moaning about Harry signing Glen Johnson. Yes that's right the one who has just been named in the England squad! After all Harry has done for us, shouldn't we just trust him to get it right?
Pompey Half Pint
yes, but i iked glen johson (he reminds me of myself... ;-) ) - but i cant stand defoe, he is far too lazy for me. true, he wouldnt be a bad signing, but not for benjani! never for benji!!!
pompeycarpet
Some sites are reporting Everton making a last ditch bid for Benji, others saying that he's close to completing his medical at City. GUTTED if he goes.
NinjaTim
nonono pleeeeeaaaassssseeee noooooooooo
pompeycarpet
Carpet read my comment above. It all hinges on Defoe. If that goes through, Benji will go through.
stillthewhizz
i think defoe and baros can work as i see baros doing the running and defoe the finishing. i think could make the difference from those 0-0 games to 3pts
knocker
What a day to pick to have no internet access until now (17.45 hrs)! Sky sports now reporting that Man City are applying for a work permit for Benji;
UKTony
stillthewhizz - i read your earlier comment, and i am currently in the process of panicking, at the threat of seeing my 3 favourite players from last sason just disapearing. please, NO!
pompeycarpet
I'm happy with it all - now to ditch Nugent....
WalshWasGod
Just got to the net now (6pm) Got to admit I reckon Defoe will come and Benj depart, we lose work rate, but gain goals, Defoe will outscore Benji any day, I love Benji for the all the same reasons as eveyone else, but I've said before, if Defoe comes, does sod all for 89 mins then scores, I'm happy
paultsmouth
Gary, Matty and now Benji, they all gave 100%, more than can be said for high paid others. I wish the big move had happened, namely "HR" to Newcastle.
007
more likely however paultsouth, is that he comes, does sod all for 179 minutes then scores. his goal record isnt one a game, but benjani puts the effort in 100% of the time, and gets the odd goal sometimes too!
pompeycarpet
baros has been a failure wherever he has been and showed no potential against liverpool, trust me i paid £125 to get there and watch hyim. i cant understand why midge thinks we wouldnt miss Kanu, the really confusing thing is Harry said we must keep benjani as we are not a 442 team. OH YES I REMEMBER NOW its like i said before im gald harry is our manager but i also recognise he is a liar who will say anything at anytime to suit him
russellm
i wont go that far, but we quite simply cant go selling our best players, and the only ones who put effort in to buy lazy ones. we just cant!
pompeycarpet
paul, trouble is it was Benji's hassling up front that got us goals, I always saw him and Defoe together, If Defoe does sod all, no other bleeder does anymore, except Diarra, Who's gonna chase down the opposition? 007, controversial!! I was delighted when HR stayed, still am, but he does infuriate and bewilder me sometimes!
pompey4me
Presumably you wish we were at the bottom of the Championship and signing players of the calibre of Tony Dobson and Jamie Vincent because that is what happened before Harry!!!
Pompey Half Pint
this is the 78th tag on this story so i have not read any others realy as im just nipping while the kids have tea...If we get the reported £8-10m being touted and JD arrives it will be a good deal in the long run. Just compare their stats
plymouth graham
no. harry staying is good. BUT, we are loosing players who actually chase the ball down, and without benjani, we will only have diara left, and how long will he stay for? no, deofe COULD work, IF benjani stays. if not benji has to go to finance the move, then lets move on.
pompeycarpet
Right Defoe, give him the right service, he will get goals, 2 weeks we get some Africans back, the work rate will all be behind Defoe, it is up to everyone else to feed it through to him, anyone remember a bloke called Jimmy Greaves? He was called a goal-hanger, work-shy, the lot, his goals record was second to none, I think it is a step up if we get Defoe, not one back
paultsmouth
007 we all get frustrated with him sometimes, whilst the bar code affair was going on i was quite clear that "the timing was unfortunate but if he was to go at the end of the season i to would not have been that bothered". i am sure jackastorrie told arry then about the takeover deal then. I also worry that defoe will be another andy cole affair where the manager bought an inappropriate player he always wanted. by the way GOOD NEWS !!! Glen J & Jamo in the england squad
russellm
not a step up, not a step down - a step sideways in terms of quality. BUT, its not all about quality, and benjani is a great guy on and off the pitch. and generally everywhere. they are two very differnt players, but i would rather have benjani every time.
pompeycarpet
If he comes, give it until the end of May and see how you all feel then.
paultsmouth
still thewhizz, im not sure how good your memory is but it seems to me baros was one of those players who does well for one tournament then rides on that wave for a while, my boss at the time was a czech die hard sparta prague fan and he was more surpised than anybody about the baros golden boot. he didnt get into the scouse team when others were available, and he was rubbish at villa, the same french manger who arranged the liverpool move then arranged for him to go to lyon and he was considered at best average there. and forgetting facts, i was at the manu game and i thought he was very very ordinary.
russellm
he scored 5 goals in euro, WOW!
Gleams
paultsmouth whilst i have alwayse been upfront about not being a Defoeist if he is coming the discussion is pretty much over. So moving onto the practicalities im thinking given it is generally accepted by all that JD is lazy and stropey but, a proven goal scorer in a 442 system how do we go forward? Our africans were bought for the 4,5,1 system which according to our Arry (well until this morning anyway) was the system best suited to our play and balance how do you think it will work with two up front ?
russellm
and i have and probably you all have just heard that defoe most likely WILL be coming as he has been left out of the england squad and has comented that since going to pompey Sol campbell though not this timesquad, Jamo and Glen Jhonson are back in. How will he fit into what he called "such a small club"
russellm
Baros has obviously come to play, so I think Harry is definitely looking toward 4-4-2 again, in midfield I think he will mix it with Muntari and Diarra centrally, with both Davis and Diop getting a fair share of games, Kranjcar picks himself, and I still think he will persevere with Utaka on the right, Kanu will be lucky to get more than a subs role from now on
paultsmouth
I repeat my earlier question though, With Defoe cup tied, Nugent not up to the standard against the major teams, and with the evidence not there for Baros yet, does that mean we are relying on Kanu scoring the goals to challenge for the FA Cup? I think we have been scuppered by not being able to sell nugent to fund defoe, and Harry (much as I admire him), too bloomin obsessed with capturing defoe he has opted to raise money with the most sellable assest being asked for. Can we progress in the FA cup with Kanu???????????
wakey
wakey whilst i dont agree with you about Nugent and i think this striker move may even be a positive for him. you are right about harry getting obsessed, we only have to think about the Andy Cole and Kanu deals.
russellm
I'm surprised nobody has come in for Kanu !
Chix
ok, i have finally come to a conclusion. DONT SELL BENJI! no, thats a little biased...as that was my opinion before...but in truth, i would rather not have nugent (much as i think he is going to be a great player!) than not have benji. Sure, if defoe comes, i will give him time, but he will have to work ****** hard if does replace benjani, and not just wait for the ball to come to him. As for the FA cup - i was looking at that as a chance to win something, or at least play at wembly. surely we cant rest all our hopes on kanu! no, we NEED to keep benjani.
pompeycarpet
As you said Rug, sad to see them go, GON, Matty & now Benji but look who has come in & Defoe is agood player & Harry will make him better. Selling Benji is a good deal for Pompey. It jsut might not seem that way at the moment.
storagematt
As you said Rug, sad to see them go, GON, Matty & now Benji but look who has come in & Defoe is agood player & Harry will make him better. Selling Benji is a good deal for Pompey. It just might not seem that way at the moment.
storagematt
it would be an awful move for benji, as i doubt man city would apreciate his effort, and just look at his goal scorring, and would then sell him for about 1 million to a lower league club. its a bad move for us, as the team against mn u lacked effort, and without benjani, it would have just been diara running about - and he could be off soon anyway. we shouldnt be selling players who are at there peak - as we should be playing them. we are not a selling club anymore, and so please harry, dont sell our best players!!!
pompeycarpet
Its a plan lads, sell benjy to city for 8 million, buy Defoe with the cash, City fans slag Benjy because he is not as good as Marsh, Lee, Anelka or Goater !! we buy him back for a million. We get a top strike force for 9 million, come on down agent Redknapp mission accomplished.
Owenspompey
I bet you're all well shocked - selling your top scorer!
merlin
I will take number 100. Sad to see Benji go but he is 29 and Defoe younger. Benjani will be a Pompey legend without doubt.
eastneydave
merlin - its not just that! we are looking at selling a player who is 5th in the actim index (ahead of fabregas!!!) - despite having a patch of poor form for the last 3 months! he is our top scorer, and one of our best players, and the effort he puts in is incredible!!! i cant see why we are even considering selling him, and "shocked" is a bit of an understatement. at least in regards to me it is anyway.
pompeycarpet
His medical is taking a long time.. by my reckoning it's longer than GON's took already... It's not like he's unfit he played last night for gods sake... Come on somebody put us out of our misery !
Chix
GOOD OLD BBC ...... Only about 5 hours late 2129: BREAKING NEWS My colleague informs me that Benjani is on his way from Portsmouth up to Manchester, presumably for talks/a medical with City ahead of his possible transfer. Now if that doesn't get the old juices flowing, I don't know what would. WHATEVER NEXT ....
Chix
Defoe has agreed terms & is having his medical. It's all or nothing.
storagematt
not really all or nothing, as we wont sell benji till we get defoe - but we will sell him if we do get him...so its more one or the other...:-)
pompeycarpet
...but PLEASE...IM TIRED! i dont want to have to stay up till midnight to find out that benji is leaving...
pompeycarpet
Remember that Harry has said Benji's been carrying injuries as of late - maybe he'll fail his medical !
StuartM
...then we wont get defoe! harry has been playing the hokey cokey with our players today...in out in out (thats the players), shake it all about (thats the formation - 4-5-1, to 4-4-2) , you do the hokey cokey (well...thats obvious) and you tunr around (well, i hope not, i thought we were going in the right direction before now) thats what its all about...
pompeycarpet
There is a worry over his knees. You're not going to spend £8m unless you're 110% sure. Fck.
storagematt
Well if only we knew how this was going to pan out.. So Defoe omes to Pompey on the news that Benjani has signed but waking up the following morning.. we find Defoe is a Pompey player and Benjani is Still a Pompey player... We now have Benjani, Defoe, Baros, Kanu, Nugent... Striker problem.. what striker problem !! - will harry play 4-3-3 to keep them all happy ?? - Oh my god... Still can't believe what has happened ... Is this the end of it do you reckon ?
