Kanu and Utaka stay in Ghana...

...for the time being that is anyway.

Nigeria faced the prospect of being humiliatingly eliminated from the African nations at the group stages but managed to get through tonight after beating Benin 2-0, as Mali were thumped 3-0 by the Ivory Coast.

However as a result Nigeria now face Ghana on Sunday - so by Monday morning we know for sure that John Utaka and Kanu from the Nigerian camp or Sulley Muntari from the Ghanaian will be on their way back to Pompey.

As much as I think Muntari coming back would be the best option at the moment despite our need for a striker, I hope that Ghana can progress to be honest.

Papa Bouba Diop and Senegal face almost certain elimination on Thursday so he could be back by the weekend, but even if he is it would be unlikely that he would be back in time to face Chelsea.

Well if it's a choice of having Kanu & Utaka back or Muntari, the quality of Muntari is so prefable to the quantity. So against the odds it may be, we cheer on the Super Sparrows of Nigeria.

...but kanu is injurred anyway! i think we can expect to see muntari staying there though, as i expect the (or ivory coast) to win the tournament!!!

At last some good news!!

Does Kanu return to Pompey for treatment, when eliminated, or does he disappear abroad for a few weeks.
007
007 i think pompey send them to either france or germany depending upon the injury, however given kanu's pre tournament efforts coventry would be a bit more suitable

dave, what do you mean? even i have to admit it has not been ALL bad news, shame about Nugent and whilst im not impressed with baros or our recent signing of future loan outs. diarra is quite a good signing, even better if we can get him to stay a year or three. I have seen Aubin play in france and he seemed quirte impressive and Mvuemba seems to have lost none of his spirit. whilst my small brain thinks we will lose against the Mancs my heart and money says if the defence is awake from the off we are capable of scraping a draw
russellm
the beauty with diarra is that if he does well we should do well - so its a win win situation... if we do well we might do very well then who is to say he will want to go anywhere? chances are he will, but you never know...

Kanu and Utaka stay in Ghana... and they can stay there - is what i was tempted to say, but it will be good to have them back - eventually i guess.
pompeyrug
'Eventually' being the operative word Rug.... what.. say .. June! ;)

ohh, this is sooo tempting, but I wont do it! Know what i mean?!

Would having Utaka (although lacking in penetration/running in the last few games for Pompey) provide us with more balance though? Kanu would be a bonus, but hopefully if Baros is near match-fit, Kanu can then give Benjani a rest if need be (once he's fit). I agree though that Muntari is the quality, but we do have options in centre-midfield already at least - especially with Davis coming back, and Pedro in form...

Well, even a poor Utaka is currently better than Lauren who doesn't seem to have a clue when he gets the ball. Why are we so poorly off for right midfielders? They used to be ten a penny at one time. BTW, is Jonas 'Peter Parker' Gutirrez a right midfielder? Papers say we are still after him - fun signing that would be, but he does look good on YouTube. Oh, and Man City have bid 5 million for benji, apparently.
Et_tu_Pompeii
yep, as you say apparently we are still amking moves for spiderman, who is - i believe - a right sided player...
pompeyrug
did anyone see motd on saturday? the way they analysed walcott, and showed what he did in the game, thats exactly what utaka is missing, he doesnt use his pace enough. when he does, its devastating, newcastle, bolton, reading etc, but thats what utaka is missing. we should really try hard to get walcott in on loan, even tho hes from the other lot. and of course utaka being back would be a bomus, we cant afford to only have two fit strikers, else we cant change thigngs about at half time if its not working, look at the sunderland game! we had noone on the bench to come on and turn it around.
