Pompey face Preston in the cup

The draw for the 5th round of the FA cup has seen us drawn against Preston with the match taking place at Deepdale - so if fit and selected Dave Nugent will be making a quick return to his old club.

With only 6 top-flight teams - including ourselves - left in the draw we had a good chance of avoiding a premier league side and we managed this. Chelsea and Liverpool would be 'expected' to go through, but with United facing Arsenal this will give us an even better chance of glory... providing of course we overcome Preston.

Again this will not be an easy game by any means, but I would 'expect' us to win and this is a draw that I am not unhappy with at all to be honest.

most certainly - it will not be easy but we 'should' win... united or arsenal will fall, so if we can get through and get a favorable quarter final draw we can start dreaming big time!

Bit Harsh about Nugent Matt? Give the lad chance, he will come good, just think people underestimate how hard it is to make the step up to the Prem. Even Benji has said the game is mauch fatser in the prem than abroad, and the proffesional players underestimate that, so maybe you are underestimating it too. Dont hang him yet, given time im sure he will come good.

Gleamer said he was going to Preston - sooner than he thought. Owens you want to play the winner of the carrot-crunchers derby in the quarters eh! We shall see - but with Middlesboro at Sheff Utd and Manure v Arsenal there might be only 4 Prem teams in quarters. That is not good for our Euro chances as winners or runners up get a place and if they are NOT both above us there will be one less place to play for in the leagu.

We have played Preston three times before in FA Cup but always at Fratton, winning two and loing the other. In 1939 we played them in the Quarter Final on the way to winning the cup - omen or not?

EastneyDave 2 good points there - I hadn't thought about that UEFA cup place issue. Lets just hope the omen comes good. As for who we get in the next round - scummers or any other lower league side would be handy!

its a good draw for us, preston have been struggling in the championship so we shouldnt have much of a problem with them, and besides we're better on the road anyways :)

Pompey vs Scum quarter final is a dream. A semi would be even better but that's with us both missing the big four in the next round.

Scum, Wolves, Boro, Liverpool, Man Utd, Pompey, Coventry and Chelsea for the next round.

If lady luck shines our way, which it usually doesn't, we really could be going to Wembley. Just got to play better than we did against Plymouth.

too be perfectly honest, we could not have asked for a more perfect draw! its away, to a club that has not been doing great in the championship, and one of man u or arsenal is going out. of course, getting liverpool and chelsea together would have made it the PERFECT draw...but thats as good as they will ever get. sheffeild uinited to beat boro? i think so!

Boro are pretty average - in fact they're the worst team I've seen at Fratton Park this season and we lost to them! But I think if they get Alves, they'll go through.

This draw reminds of the year when Millwall made the cup final - all the premiership teams kept playing each other and knocking each other out. Lets hope Chelski play Man Utd/Arsenal in the next round. But I reckon we will make the Cup Final this year and get into Europe this way.

Paul our name is on the cup - it has 1939 written in front of it!! But you never know but in the past the draw just has a nasty habit of thwarting us. Look at 1992 when we reached the Semis we drew Liverpool (who we should have beaten) but missed Norwich and Sunderland who we would have buried.

I am going to jump the gun here. Semi final teams (and i know we are not thru even the quarters yet) MAN U, CHELSEA, POMPEY and dare i say it SOUTHHAMPTON.

if those were the last 4 in the hat what way would you want it tho... scum in the semi's and a place in europe assured if we won, or a possible pompey v scum final...

dont push it, scum arnt good enough to beat man u or chelsea! no, it wold be pompey scum that i would want in the semis if that were the case. But i wont get too cocky, i would be happy if we "only" made the semi finals. its still a trip to wembly!!! (oh, and last time we won the cup, we went to war...if we won it again, could we go to war again? (and then hold it for another 7 years ;-))

As you say Preston will be no pushover. After all they beat Derby at Derby by more than we could at Fratton only one week earlier. Add to the fact that Premier sides are a bit thin on the ground would suggest we could still be in for more upsets. Middlesborough will have to watch their step too, and one of the big guns is certain to fall....

MAN U v Chelsea and Pompey v Saints for the semi's. Even if we lost, heaven and Harry forbid, a south coast team would be in the final for the 1st time since Jesus played left back for Jerusalem. So based on pure skill ability and logic it would be a Man U v Pompey final with Pompey winning 4-1. And pigs might fly to.

I'll happily take Preston in the 5th.. Bristol Rovers in the 6th... Hudderfield in the semis and Wolves in the final... and maybe we'll win 4-1....

i would rather there were no south club teams in the final than we lost to scum in the semi's... scum were in the final a few years back dont forget.
