Lauren ready to prove his worth

Lauren insists that we have not seen the best of him and there is plenty more to come - as he told The News: 'I am back in the team and although I feel a lot from my best I have to take it step-by-step.

'I will get better if I keep playing and not getting any injuries, people will be able to see that.

'The fans haven't seen the best of me yet, I just hope I can continue to play and then I can get to my level.

'I am enjoying it but you think you can do more, that's how I feel.

'I can do much more, better passes and getting forward. I will get used to that.

'My time at Portsmouth has been frustrating. You try to get by and then you have massive problems with injuries over and over again.

'I played a few games over Christmas, which has helped me. Now with one or two more games I will get to my best, definitely'.

As he says his time with us so far has been severely hampered by a series of injures - he just cannot seem to get a run of games going, then Glen Johnson returned last summer and is now the first choice right back.

Lauren played in a right midfield role against Derby at the weekend, and although he did ok he is not the answer we are looking for in this area and although he offers more defensively I think that at this point in time Franck Songo'o would offer more attack wise, so hopefully he will get a game at the weekend? My thinking is that both could play with Johnson rested anyway?

Harry Redknapp seems content to use Johnson and Lauren on the right, if this carries on being the case it seems to make much more sense to push Johnson forward in a midfield role and play Lauren at right back... I think this will offer us much more offensively and we will not lose anything defensively, arguably gain more strength - despite the fact that Johnson has improved immensely as a defender this season.

Lauren is a fantastic footballer, all his years at Arsenal prove this and whilst you do not become a bad footballer overnight my own thinking is he is nowhere near the player he was and the injures have taken their toll on him to be honest.

So no-one has come in for him, so he's stuck here & hope's to make the best of it?

Haing watched a few old games recentky with either Arsenal or Cameroon he is certainly a player who can do better than he has shown in his games for us. Now is the chance for him to prove it.
eastneydave
he is a good player - no doubt about it! the problem i, GJ has been playing extremly well lately, and so he just hasnt had his chance. oh, and on songo'o, i WANT him to plat well, but i think he will have to go out and have a succesdul time on loan, as his period at crystol palace was a failure.
pompeycarpet
a touch harsh dont you think matt? if he wanted to leave im pretty sure that he could thb despite the fact that i fully believe that he will not be anywhere near the player he once was... he does have a chance, but i dont like him in the midfield role tbh, this is why i think songo'o could be worth giving a go while utaka is away... apart from chelski and united our other games are 'easier' so why not give him a go to see what he can do...
pompeyrug
i didn't think he did that bad against Derby, i also think a run of games should see him much improved though, meow storage

well it appears that we are not going to go for the much needed right midfielder but for a striker instead, so we are stuck with him and songo to cover on the right. He is a decent player and it isnt a bad idea to keep him around at least as a role player or a backup for the right back slot, but him in midfield is a waste, he doesnt offer much offensively and it just puts more focus and pressure on krunchie, we need someone creative and attackminded on the right to give krunchie more space to work with and give us more avenues to create plays from
whitestones
i would agree that someone creative is very important - as important or more than a striker - as we need someone who can split open a defence. but they are as hard, or harder to find than a forward!!!

Lauren hasn't been outstanding but he hasn't been bad either. He has done his job in a workman like fashion and given the chance his touch will improve again.
frattonaussie
I've said before, he is a quality right-back, average midfielder, thing is GJ is a better right-back
paultsmouth
lets say we sign this striker we want - for arguments sake lets say it will be baros, this doesnt mean we still cannot or will not sign a right midfielder...
pompeyrug
how much money do you think we have in the bank? and how much do you think the striker would cost? I dont think we have more than 10 million to spend and a quality striker like the ones we have been linked with (baros, defoe, crouch, fred) all cost at least least 6 million to 10 million. I read a press release stating from Baros' agent stating that he is pondering a loan move to pompey with an option for a transfer, I like that kind of move its always a good idea to take ur car out for a test drive before purchasing
whitestones
Although I think he should, I can't see Harry playing Johno in midfield and Lauren at right back... Lauren hasn't show us what he do yet, but how long do we wait ... I think he has to face the fact that he's a good 'squad' player but ain't gonna hold down a first team place on a prolonged basis..
Chix
whitestones, if it is quality and the players will come here - which is the toughest thing sometimes, getting them to want to come here - i think we have the money...
