'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lets play good football...

...this is the message that Harry Redknapp has delivered with what he has said on the Pompey Site: 'we want to play, that's all I ever say to the players.

'We've got good footballers here and I want to see them pass the ball. I hate it when we lose the ball by just kicking it anywhere.

'When I had Rio Ferdinand at West Ham all those years ago he would maybe make the odd mistake once a year but I would still encourage him.

'If you tell him not to play what are you looking for? Do you want him to kick it up field or into the stands?

'That's the easy way out and too many people do it.

'Look at Niko and Pedro passing the ball around - they were fantastic'.

We do have to keep things in perspective, as with all due respect to the opponents it was Derby and we should be beating them at home but we did look good at the weekend and looked as though home form could return.

There have been a few times this season when we have played some bad football - against Boro in particular just after Christmas we were awful and we basically reverted to a long ball tactic for 90 minutes. This was not only ugly, but it did not suit us - but in the main we have played some fantastic football.

Sadly most of our best football has been away from Fratton Park this season, but now that we have got that monkey off our back and scored some long over due goals, as well as picking up a win with players seemingly having returned to their best form and others arriving we could see some great stuff at home for the rest of this season...

Good for HR. Passing football is great as long as you retain the ball. At home this season we have given the ball away too cheaply and hence not scored the goals we should.

Diarra was hungry for the ball; I think that rubbed off on others
UKTony
Yes this is why so many people like Harry - because his teams play football.
tracyc
we have players that are confortable on the ball, so long as they use it in the right way and others are intelligent enough to see what they will do - which most are - we should see some fantastic stuff at fratton from here on in i reckon...
pompeyrug
th problem was, MOTD clearly didnt think it was a good game!!! i hope/think we will be seeing some fantastic stuff at fratton - but i would also like to see our away form pick up again...particulyl when we play man u...

If Harry wants to play good football, I want to watch it!

Play as quality team & you'll always beat a team of quality individuals.

If its good entertaining football HR wants then he needs to leave Kanu out of the squad.
frattonaussie
Or, play to his strengths, not put him up front on his own.
pompey4me
agreed p4me - im ok with kanu playing if he is used in the right way and to his strenghts, not up top on his own...
pompeyrug
Nor in midfield where Nigeria played him today.

frattonaussie - as I read the article, my response came to me ..but you've taken the words right out of my mouth.... and, not even up front with another P4me .... Sorry, think he is a lazy good for nothing waste of space who ploughs a tiny furrow in the pitch every time he plays due to his lack of movement .. Oh and yeah doesn't he hold the ball up well (yawn).... other than that I agree we have some excellent ball players all they need to to pass and move into space..

Kanu stretchered off for Nigeria means he could come home early or not even play at all for a while...that might please some folk here.

After this weekends results we're back in the chasing pack and only 3pts off the Europe boys. Granted we've got United and Chelsk coming up but we're a stubborn team when we want to be and why can't we pull off a shock?
stillthewhizz
He wasn't strechered off because he was injured; he was stretchered off because it was to far for him to walk. I didn't see any of the game but I understand Utaka didn't do to well either.
frattonaussie
It wouldn't be a shock if we beat Chelsea or Man U; it would be miracle. I happened to be reading some French Newpaper reports on Pompey so I'll quote some to show how things are viewed differently and all of these are about Pompey. My translation may be a little awry but they are fairly accurate: "one of the powerhouses of European football", "Stylish play with flair that many French clubs could learn from" "such a strong, quality squad already and getting stronger. Few French teams could match them" "Are now one of the EPL top clubs so it is little wonder French players are clamouring to join them". Just shows that we don't always appreciate what we've got already.
frattonaussie
if only tge english media - more of them, not just some - could think the same way eh mate... seems like we are making waves overseas - lets hope we can do this in a european competition next season! i reckon we can surprise united or chelski and really wouldnt be surprised if we managed to beat 1 of them tbh. a draw isnt out of the question at old trafford - maybe more...
pompeyrug
its always really nice to see other fans reactons to our club. seeing another team commenting on the way you play football the way its meant to be played, seeing them suppor you when you are threatened by injustice (ie newcastle)...it would be great to see us beat chelsea or man u. our global brand is bulding much faster than our english one, but who cares? there are more good players out pf england than in it...

Pompey have a strong support base in Africa, a building support base in some parts of China, a following in the UAE, and a growing fan base in Europe now Sasha has got his way and we are looking at non african players as well. Even Iceland now knows about PFC. Seems strange that people from Southampton don't support Pompey when they don't have much to support in their town. This is said with apologies to the Southampton Aged Care Bowls Club who are a great bunch.
frattonaussie
I can remember a time when there wasn't much to support in Pompey... never thought of supporting Scum though!.. If they've nothing to support that's tough, not sure I'd want them here,,, not even the Southampton Aged Care Bowls Club ..sorry ;)
