Benji targets 20 goals!

Benji targets 20 goals!

Benjani had previously targeted 10-15 goals - but he is not content with that, he is now targeting a lifetime best of 20 as he has told The News: 'I'm very, very happy. My target was between 10 and 15 goals, but now, as I've scored 12, I need to push more. Maybe I can even get more than 15.

'If I score more it will be a bonus. In France I scored 16 in one season and in South Africa I scored 19 and I would like to beat that'.

In typical Benjani fashion though he was not concerned about scoring himself, simply winning was something that he was more concerned about and wanted more: 'it was just a relief to score in front of our fans on Saturday. We didn't win for a long time at home so I'm happy and the fans are, too. We hope to continue winning at home'.

15 goals was my aim for Benjani this season, if he can stay injury free and we keep creating him the chances and - most importantly in my opinion - we can get a goalscorer to play alongside him I reckon he can make 20 goals.

If he can get 20 it will be an incredible return and will well and truly stick 2 very big fingers up to those that had ridiculed him over the years - although in fairness he has already done this!

another hat trick this weekend would be nice :-) i honestly never thought i would hear benji saying things like this - and really didnt think i would believe it even if he did but i honestly think he could get 20 goals this season now...
21/01/2008 15:23:00
Anything above 15-20 would be great. Anybody else for double figures?
21/01/2008 15:31:00
its going to be pretty hard from the looks of it for anyone else to get double figures isnt it... if nuge could start scoring then maybe as he has what 4 in the cups so far? altho having said that if we can get a real goalscorer in then i reckon he could get into double figures - if we managed 2 strikers in double figures then i think we will finish pretty high - higer than ever in the premier league anyway...
21/01/2008 15:36:00
I think you are wrong Rug. If we get a new striker as you suggest, Benji in many games could be forced to play wide, he does not score from that position.
21/01/2008 15:56:00
Its a realistic goal, but he needs to regain his consistency, and as James Bond stated we shouldnt play him out of position where he's ineffective. As for who else could make it to double figures, I would pick Utaka, if he heats up a bit he could be hard to handle
21/01/2008 16:32:00
Utakhahahaha?? Stones man, i have to disagree.
21/01/2008 16:43:00
Its great to have targets and set them high - I think he can do it, he's already over half way there. We have to get Kris Kamara to cover our matches for Sky more often, every time he does Benji gets a hat-trick!
21/01/2008 17:04:00
if 'arry has what he considers a 'goalscorer' in his squad then i am certain that we will go 4-4-2, which will not mean benji being pushed out wide - he will play benji alongside whoever this is and both will benefit... just my thoughts. also have to agree that unless utaka comes back from africa with a much better attitude and work rate than that he had before he went i cannot see him getting double figures either - there is already 'talk' that he could be sold in the summer?
21/01/2008 17:49:00
Benjy is just a stop gap wide player and i am sure Harry wants him as the lone striker or up front with a decent partner, what Benjy doesnt get many of is tap ins from shots being saved from fellow strikers, he makes his own chances,Guy, Walshy and Quinny made an art of being in the right place at the right time to smash home from inside the box.

Duo sign professional Pompey deals

Will Jez Bedford and Theo Widdrington be the future Pompey midfield? We'll certainly hope so, clearly the Blues do too or they wouldn't have signed professional deals at Fratton Park.

Nathan Thompson - A Swindon perspective

Prior to his departure for Wigan, Paul Cook wanted Nathan Thompson at Pompey. Interest was retained by Kenny Jackett, who completed his free transfer signing from Swindon last week.
