Benji targets 20 goals!

Benjani had previously targeted 10-15 goals - but he is not content with that, he is now targeting a lifetime best of 20 as he has told The News: 'I'm very, very happy. My target was between 10 and 15 goals, but now, as I've scored 12, I need to push more. Maybe I can even get more than 15.

'If I score more it will be a bonus. In France I scored 16 in one season and in South Africa I scored 19 and I would like to beat that'.

In typical Benjani fashion though he was not concerned about scoring himself, simply winning was something that he was more concerned about and wanted more: 'it was just a relief to score in front of our fans on Saturday. We didn't win for a long time at home so I'm happy and the fans are, too. We hope to continue winning at home'.

15 goals was my aim for Benjani this season, if he can stay injury free and we keep creating him the chances and - most importantly in my opinion - we can get a goalscorer to play alongside him I reckon he can make 20 goals.

If he can get 20 it will be an incredible return and will well and truly stick 2 very big fingers up to those that had ridiculed him over the years - although in fairness he has already done this!

another hat trick this weekend would be nice :-) i honestly never thought i would hear benji saying things like this - and really didnt think i would believe it even if he did but i honestly think he could get 20 goals this season now...
pompeyrug
Anything above 15-20 would be great. Anybody else for double figures?
storagematt
its going to be pretty hard from the looks of it for anyone else to get double figures isnt it... if nuge could start scoring then maybe as he has what 4 in the cups so far? altho having said that if we can get a real goalscorer in then i reckon he could get into double figures - if we managed 2 strikers in double figures then i think we will finish pretty high - higer than ever in the premier league anyway...
pompeyrug
I think you are wrong Rug. If we get a new striker as you suggest, Benji in many games could be forced to play wide, he does not score from that position.
007
Its a realistic goal, but he needs to regain his consistency, and as James Bond stated we shouldnt play him out of position where he's ineffective. As for who else could make it to double figures, I would pick Utaka, if he heats up a bit he could be hard to handle
whitestones
Utakhahahaha?? Stones man, i have to disagree.
pompey4me
Its great to have targets and set them high - I think he can do it, he's already over half way there. We have to get Kris Kamara to cover our matches for Sky more often, every time he does Benji gets a hat-trick!
tracyc
if 'arry has what he considers a 'goalscorer' in his squad then i am certain that we will go 4-4-2, which will not mean benji being pushed out wide - he will play benji alongside whoever this is and both will benefit... just my thoughts. also have to agree that unless utaka comes back from africa with a much better attitude and work rate than that he had before he went i cannot see him getting double figures either - there is already 'talk' that he could be sold in the summer?
pompeyrug
Benjy is just a stop gap wide player and i am sure Harry wants him as the lone striker or up front with a decent partner, what Benjy doesnt get many of is tap ins from shots being saved from fellow strikers, he makes his own chances,Guy, Walshy and Quinny made an art of being in the right place at the right time to smash home from inside the box.
Owenspompey
benji is no "fox in the box" - but who honestly cares? he makes goals for himself and others, and tries harder than any other player on the pitch! he will thrive in 4-4-2, and seemed to really enjoy playing alongside nugent. but 3 more hatricks, and he is on 21 goals...so nearly there!
pompeycarpet
Carpet, 3 more hat tricks would not be bad, i hope he gets a decent strike partner, or a target man of quality who can give him a hand. I would enjoy playing with Nugent as he would make me feel and look good.
Owenspompey
If you add on our impressive cup run to the FA Cup final then Benji's got an excellent chance of getting 20 goals this season !
StuartM
owenspompey - this time last year, benjani was putting a lot of effot in, working the goals for our team mates, but not scorring. this year, nugent is running his socks off, trying hard, working the goals for other players, and is in the right positions to snatch the chances if benjani misses them. just becasue he missed agaoinst derby, his record for scorring/starts is still good, although he is running vey low on confidence. give the lad a chance!
pompeycarpet
Carpet, no-one wants him to suceed more than me, but he just does not look like a Premiership player, he reminds me of Earnshaw, Howard, Hulse, Beattie and other Championship strikers who just wont do it in the bigger league, he is running out of time mate and i think Harry will lose patience with him soon, or when he has a striker available.
Owenspompey
Benji should break the 15 mark, that will be a first since the Yak, a Hat-trick should have boosted his confidence sky-high

My Mate at work is a Zimbabwean and he informs me in the home land Benji's nickname was the "Undertaker" because buried so many. So lets hope he can continue with this. Rug,Geof, Rugs Bro Daryl, and another -we got a spare tkt now will be at Fratton this weekend as they take on our Local team down here in Devon- we will be having a pint and meeting my old fella in the Brewers Arms in Milton if any one fancies saying hello. - i will be wearing a a plaque of some description attached to my Pompey shirt to identify where i live- but we are obviously hoping Benji and Nugent will have a hat-full of goals so we can live in peace down here
plymouth graham
dont worry graham i will be producing and publishing an article in a day or so's time asking people that want to meet us for a pint before the game to do so - a few of your fellas have my email and mobile, but in that article i will ask anyone that wants to meet up that doent to get in touch with me and i will exchange numbers with you - clwarly i dont want to publish this on the net tho :-)
pompeyrug
Rug, Graham... I'll be up for a beer fellas.... if I can manage to stagger from the Barn to the Brewers that is ;)
Chix
On another note, Benjani is the nicest footballer i've ever had the pleasure to meet. Therefore he deserves to meet his goals. "Benjani woooooah…"
stillthewhizz
Benji will get 20 if Nugent plays alongside him. Bring back Kanu and Benji will be lucky to get another goal and Kanu wont make up for it. Utaka could do well in the centre paired with Benji or Nugent. He certainly has to do better than his efforts on the wing so far. Diarra and Muntari together will be great and both are capable of scoring from 25 yards so no team will take chances with them so it will leave other players free to score more regularly. Well thats my theory anyway.
frattonaussie
what about crouch and benji - could that work...
pompeyrug
i think with crouch, we would play more of a long abll game. wasnt it nice not to see james booti the ball upfield against derby?!
pompeycarpet
i keep disagreeing mate - crouchy isnt a long ball player, he doesnt like it when liverpool do it... his strength is on the ground, so we wouldnt need to play the long ball unless desperate - he holds the ball up as well as any player - kanu aside - that ive seen, he's the english kanu but not as lazy!
