'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Berger king

Sky sports is reporting that we are plotting a 'shock' move to bring Patrik Berger - the man who scored our first ever premiership goal - back to Fratton Park.

The veteran, who has seen his time at Villa ravaged by injury was thought to be preparing to move back to his native Czech Republic but the 'reports' claim that Harry Redknapp is prepared to 'gamble' on our former star and offer him a 1 and a half year contract.

However Villa, who have one of the smallest squads in the top flight, maybe in England full stop are unwilling to let him leave at the moment according to his agent Pavel Paska who told ISM Football: 'Aston Villa don't want to hear about releasing him at present'.

Even with this, it is thought that we will be trying to tie up a deal in the next 10 days.

Paska, who also acts as agent for Adam Hlousek and Libok Kozak has also confirmed that the teenagers are on trial with Pompey and if they impress he has hinted that they could stay longer, maybe to be joined by their fellow countryman: 'if they impress there, it is not ruled out that they could stay there for a longer time'.

Berger is one of many footballers that should never have been allowed to leave Pompey when he did, but that was Alain Perrin for you fellas...

I am pretty sure that someone mentioned something about us making a move for Berger in a comment recently - with it said that Villa wanted Jamie Ashdown in return?

A guy mentioned this on the Sky Sports Transfer Forum last week and I thought it was another of those clowns who had spotted C Ronaldo in Plymouth with his name on the back of a Plymouth Shirt! Anything in this?

This could be doable, but it would have to be a swap deal, because we can't afford to lose any more players. If Matty Taylor was still there, that might have been ideal. Oh well.
Carlosio
Can't see the point of this one. Yes he was a good player but nothing that special now that would make a real difference.
storagematt
it is a good move in my opinion.
Midge
He is good down the left, and would provide cover for niko.
Midge
I don't personally see why you need him, he isn't the player he was, but he is a player that we would let go.
Carlosio
WE DON'T NEED PLAYERS OF LESSER QUALITY LIKE THIS - ARE YOU MAD? PERHAPS WE COULD RE-SIGN KARADIS, MAYBE? OR MORNAR? BONUS IF WE STILL HAVE HIM. SHAME DERBY GOT TO LOREN ROBERT BEFORE WE DID. WHO'S ANDY COLE WITH NOW?
Et_tu_Pompeii
Now Milan Baros is a decent player who could do a good job of work for us. Always thought he played well when Liverpool visited Fratton. And has something to still prove. Rather have Guiza though.
Et_tu_Pompeii
He would give us cover down the left but he is 34 now and appears to be used by Villa as an impact player from the bench. Must be someone younger about worth a try?
eastneydave
well said et_tu, good player previously but could be too much like covering old ground, I say move forward sign new players and drive the squad forward, saying that I will now contradict myself, I just read something about a 9mil bid for crouch... now that would be a welcome return!
Sachas_Brother
Christ! great player and all that but how injury prone? If it is true, we better start planning for the one game when will be available!
WalshWasGod
Not too keen on us going back to Berger. He was great for us but he's not really good enough for us now.
stillthewhizz
they often say never go back - sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt... im sentimental so that part of me wants him back and it oculd go one of two ways, he will be inspired by it - be able to stay injury free and be inspirational for us, or he will return, hardly play and those that didnt know him before will just think he is rubbish! what i will say is if he does return i dont like the idea of a 1 and a half year contract - i say a deal until the summer with the option of another, if it doesnt work out he goes back to the czech republic having ended where he had some fantastic days during his english career...
pompeyrug
Greta memories of Bergers sweet left fot...but, thats how it should stay, as a memory. Old ground, one that we shouldnt go back to.
pompey4me
im not too keen on this signing, he would be a short term cover solution, I would not want to sign him to a 1.5 year contract, it would be a waste, he is old and with injury problems. If anything I would get him on loan or on contract untill the summer with an option (as rug suggested)
whitestones
NO NO NO, he is well past his sell by date, we have to think of better prospects than him. I would rather go for Ledley of Cardiff or Brunt at Sheff Wed, please dont bring him back, as if it goes wrong for him he will be remembered for the second spell rather than the good service he gave us the first time.
Owenspompey
not convinced on this one either. he is old(ish), and does not have the quality that others may have (although i still cant think who has the quality needed...). and is it a good idea to return to old players?
pompeycarpet
If he came, and thats a big if, I really can't envisage him playing more than 20 mins at the end of a game, his legs must be on the way out now
paultsmouth
that what ive thought for a while, but in fairness to him when he was able to play a few games for villa last season he looked the dogs and still had it - im torn, i do and dont want this, as said before - and as Owens also said - if he came back and it went belly up some might just remember that and not the magic from his 1st spell...
pompeyrug
Thanks for what you did in our first premiership season Patrick it'll never be forgotten.... Harry, move on ...
Chix
I can't see the point of getting Berger into Pompey. He is getting older and past his prime; he would struggle putting in 90 minutes at full pace. Harry says he wouldn't bring someone on just to take penalties and corners but isn't that exactly what he would be doing with Berger.
