Is Sol injured, walking or going?

When the teams were announced yesterday and there was no place for Sol Campbell to say I was 'surprised' would be an understatement.

The Quay were reporting that he has been 'injured' in the warm up, but he was not even part of this warm-up. Then after the game he was said he picked up a 'back injury' in training on Friday, so he had to sit it out.

It did not take long for 'rumours' to circulate around Fratton Park that he had been involved in a 'bust up' with Harry Redknapp and Peter Storrie over the much published disagreement over the clubs 'ambition' when he was basically told to shut it...

You will see in the forum the talk of this and more than one person shared views with me on this via text yesterday, before, during and after the game, with a reliable source - again I must stress that this source is not someone that I claim has 'inside knowledge' merely connections in the media - telling me that the papers were not buying the 'Sol was injured line' and were trying to push the club for answers.

Today 'reports' in the Sunday papers are 'linking' him with a move to Newcastle, something they had a week or so back.

As I have said several times recently he is still a fantastic footballer but time is catching up with him and I feel that he is concerned by this so he wants someone to be signed who can act as 'cover' for him every now and again so he can be 'rested' when needed. As much as I would like to see this, we are not a bottomless pit of money, so if we had to choose between a defender and a striker I think I know which way we would go - lets just hope that we are not forced into needing a new defender...

To be honest I am not really buying into the 'he was injured' claims and do fear that there has been some sort of altercation, but you would hope that if there has all parties will be man enough to put this to one side and agree to get back to footballing matters.

All we can do now is wait and see how things pan out, I am not trying to alarm anyone with what is written here, or trying to be a 'rumour monger' I just share what I hear and what I think - this is no exception...

not injurred...well, probably not anyway...and also probably not going. he likes walking out on people, as it is the only way he knows to show his emotian - but he is getting on a bit, so i doubt he will be mooving on.

Get rid while you can, but let him come to WHL so we can give him his traditional welcoming before hand!! He always looks like he wants to walk off the pitch when he plays at The Lane...I wonder why????

don;t really know if we need him noe did fantastically well yesterday. Distin as a captain impressed me maybe sol needed a break? or maybe he is looking at newcastle (the final payment)

tough one that matt..sss - maybe its becasue he just doesnt see the point in sticking around when we are so obviously going to win? no, thats a little harsh - i hope he doesnt leave, as he IS a good player, and i had previosuly thought that between this season, next season, and the one after, he might slide into the tony adams role, who i think will go away, to get a bit of experiance as a manager...(before possibly returning, to take over after harry retires?)

Interesting, wouldn't surprise me at all if he did leave although think he has done a good job for us since his arrival.

i dont want him to leave - cant imagine he is short of a few quid so he wont need a final payment, but time is catching him... he has been fantastic for us and i want him to stay and do hope that is was just a case of him being 'rested' but im not sure tbh? when all is said and done tho no one is bigger than the club, so if he wants out he must go, if he doesnt he just has to stop the whinging and also accept a 'slapped wrist' when given him...

Lancs Evening Post are quoted as saying Keegan wants him. On that basis alone, I think he'll stay. But, if he is throwing toys out of prams, do we want him?

Im a bit suprised about how people feel about this one...No matter why he wasnt there I wouldnt want to see Sol go! totally agree that hes slowed a bit & not quite what he was, but Sol is still in my view a fantastic defender...Im not gonna go slagging the guy off just yet, i mean no one knows what happened, it could be anything.....

not quite what we/i was saying charlie - i WANT him to stay, i think he WILL stay - but when your players arnt playing at there best, are demanding mooves, and complaing at the way the club is run (not being specific to sol - this is a generalisation) you dont necesserily want them do you?

CharlieChimes, i think you might have got the wrong impression mate - i dont think anyone is slagging him off or putting him on the 'scrap heap' yet as we have all basically said he is still a fantastic defender, and we do want to keep him - but it has been noticeable recently that time is catching up with him... i just think that the 'talking' off the pitch from both sides needs to stop and lets just concentrate on playing football and doing the job that we want - which is to finish as high as we can, hopefully in a european place...

pompeyboy, pamarot did okay, but a couple of times he let players past him, and he made a few mistakes, if it was against a diff team we would have conceded a few more, pamarot cant cover for sol every game, if sol is still "injured" against plymouth, why not try aubey at centere back? he was signed as cover for any of the back four, just this game came to soon for him...

I hope he stays, Distin does the speedy stuff at the back, if you need to see how far we have come, compare Sol to big Darren Moore!

If Sol; wants out, he'll go, no matter what we may want. Great as Sol is, Distin has the legs that Campbell doesn't. It woul;dn't be the end if he leaves but the timing is what is important.

yep agreed, i want sol to stay and if he does go i hope he can delay this until the summer as leaving now would not be good timing at all... i guess all will become clearer this week?

...the week in which we sign a creative playmaker, and a 20 goal a season forward...for free! i quite like the idea of theo walcot coming on loan... and maybe pederson coming too ;-)

This story has got Sol Campbell written all over it and yes he would cash in enjoying the sunset of his career on the south coast for a few extra pounds up in the smokey north. You guys did him a favour a got him back on track after Arsenal and now he will repay that with absolutley no loyalty.

Well we did say a couple of seasons ago "The Campbell is coming aha aha". Perhaps now it's a case of "Campbells Soup, have it while it's hot, concentrated or not it could be off !!!"

It'll be interesting to see what if anything the papers pick up on (both locally and nationally.. also be interesting to see if that 'back problem' get reported as an injury.. as all injuries must get reported within 48 hours... ummm let's wait and see shall we

I would be gutted if he left (esp right now when we have no cover) but I am concerned, because this stinks to high heaven. Too many conflicting reasons why he wasn't there on Saturday. I think he's got the same kind of "back injury" Matty had last weekend. I think its becoming a code word. Hope I'm wrong, or that Arry can talk him into at least staying till the summer, hopefully Linvoy will be back by then and we will have more chances to replace him.

I like a Sol a lot, cant say love him as i am a straight guy with kids lol. I dont really want to see Sol go, but Distin more than makes up for Sol now. Dont get me wrong, when Sol is at his best he by the far THE best. But when he loses foucs on the team etc, he slips fast down the pecking order. He made noises when Harry was touted to be leaving, and i think Sol takes a while, and needs time out to decide what he wants. agree with above, Noe and Distin work well together, so if Sol does want out, lets atleast offload him and make money.
