When the teams were announced yesterday and there was no place for Sol Campbell to say I was 'surprised' would be an understatement.
The Quay were reporting that he has been 'injured' in the warm up, but he was not even part of this warm-up. Then after the game he was said he picked up a 'back injury' in training on Friday, so he had to sit it out.
It did not take long for 'rumours' to circulate around Fratton Park that he had been involved in a 'bust up' with Harry Redknapp and Peter Storrie over the much published disagreement over the clubs 'ambition' when he was basically told to shut it...
You will see in the forum the talk of this and more than one person shared views with me on this via text yesterday, before, during and after the game, with a reliable source - again I must stress that this source is not someone that I claim has 'inside knowledge' merely connections in the media - telling me that the papers were not buying the 'Sol was injured line' and were trying to push the club for answers.
Today 'reports' in the Sunday papers are 'linking' him with a move to Newcastle, something they had a week or so back.
As I have said several times recently he is still a fantastic footballer but time is catching up with him and I feel that he is concerned by this so he wants someone to be signed who can act as 'cover' for him every now and again so he can be 'rested' when needed. As much as I would like to see this, we are not a bottomless pit of money, so if we had to choose between a defender and a striker I think I know which way we would go - lets just hope that we are not forced into needing a new defender...
To be honest I am not really buying into the 'he was injured' claims and do fear that there has been some sort of altercation, but you would hope that if there has all parties will be man enough to put this to one side and agree to get back to footballing matters.
All we can do now is wait and see how things pan out, I am not trying to alarm anyone with what is written here, or trying to be a 'rumour monger' I just share what I hear and what I think - this is no exception...
