Lauren primed for midfield role

Harry Redknapp looks set to play Lauren on the right side of midfield against Sunderland this weekend.

We used this against Arsenal, and although the defeat was not his fault at all it was clear that this partnership with Glen Johnson did not work, well not in the way it was set-up... but Redknapp has told The News that he has no reservations about doing this again: 'John's now gone and we haven't got any other right wingers who can replace him, that's an area we need to strengthen without doubt.

'But Lauren can play there for sure, he wouldn't let you down.

'He's just been unlucky that he's not in the team, Glen has been playing fantastically so it's always going to be hard to get past him at right-back.

'Lauren on the right-hand side of midfield is not a bad option at all, he played there in Spain, he's an experienced player.

'I think him and Glen can work well together on that side. They can go forward and attack as well defend together, I can see that working.

'Lauren can always drop in when Glen's attacking and will get us a lot more defensive strength on that side.

'It's definitely something I'm considering and he's not got any injuries at the moment, which has been a bit of a problem.

So, unless in the unlikely even that we are able to sign a right winger this week this looks likely to be what we will do against Sunderland.

Redknapp is not keen on Franck Songo'o - that much seems blatantly obvious - so with him not even being taken into consideration judging by Redknapp's own words, if we do go down that avenue again I think that I would not be alone in thinking, probably even hoping that it would be Lauren at right back and Johnson in a right midfield role.

I want to make it clear that I am not against the pairing - but in all honesty I would prefer not to see it but needs must so we roll with this, it is just as said I would much prefer to see Lauren behind Johnson and not the other way around.

I'd prefer Niko & Matty on the wide midfield roles, swapping throughoyt the match. I know it won't happen but...

Lauren is a good footballer and can play anywhere on the right. If he and Johnson can strike up an understanding they could form a good partnership with neither frightened about having to defend.

fair enough fellas - that cross field pass against liverpool was fantastic wasnt it.

I'd prefer either Krunchie on the right with Matty on the left, or possibly Lauren r/back and Glen in right midfield - but I've also learned to trust Arry. If he does this and we win, I'll have no complaints.

Lauren is not a wing back or midfield player and neither is Glen Johnson. If either of these fills this role it is because the squad is so thin and we have not got any natural right sided players. We need to get players in quickly, and it seems to have gone rather quiet!!

arry, go out and get Charles N'zogbia on loan. I reckon he could do a job for us, if not Walcott will do.

One thing Lauren can do is pass. Passing means creating and creating means goals, so I'm up for this move.

Yes, I would like to see him there, but I still think we need a right winger.

i would prefer kranjcar to play thee, and bring matty into the team. whilst lauren s a great passer of the ball, he doesnt even seem to have any attacking "flair" - so whilst he would nhave a great pass completion record, they would not be the defence splitting passes we would want...

in terms of down the right, i dont think nwe would see much difference between him and utaka - its just we would be without the one off, once a month run that utaka makes...

I really don't rate Lauren as a midfielder, full-back yes, midfield no

Not sure I like this either but what other options do we have .. Play him and right back and bring Johnno into midfeild ..perhaps... swap Matty and Krunchie,,, well that ain't goning to happen.. No I think this is what we will see and although it won't give us much attacking wise (does Utaka?) I'm happy that Lauren can pass and also tackle .. so all in all probably a better option than utaka anyway..

The way its going at the moment it won't be Harry picking the team any way. Wonder who Sam will pick?? or oh god it could be McLaren. On the hope he is still with us I seriously hope as jbaker has said that he swaps that around. I also hope that he gives Nugget a full run out and let the lad prove to us that he is worth 6m

like most of you I would have wanted to see krunchie and matty as the wide players but knew it wasnt going to happen, I think he will do well, he will keep things tight, defensively, and may make some decent passes. As for johnson in the midfield role I just dont think he is comfortable there, I think he is more comfortable overlapping the right midfielder, which in this case shouldnt be hard
