Defoe still an option?

Today's Independent claim that Pompey could still be in the running for Spurs striker Jermain Defoe - who has been a long-term target of Harry Redknapp's. Villa are also keen admirers of his...

The Spurs striker was apparently told yesterday by Juande Ramos that he can leave White Hart Lane and the thought is that we had made a loan enquiry about him, which if true was understandably rejected as Spurs want to sell rather than loan.

Defoe is said to be one of several players that Spurs are trying to offload this month, but with it always said that he would like to move to one of the 'big 4' clubs not to mention the fact that we cannot afford - or apparently cannot - the £10m asking price it seems more and more likely that such a deal will not happen?

The England man himself is insisting that he does not want to go and does want to sign a new contract, so this saga appears that it will have some time to run yet...

A succession of knowledgable Spurs managers have not rated this bench warmer so why should we consider him to be the holy grail of strikers? I can't be the only one who see's him as an expensive luxury? Peter Crouch is worth TWO defoes.

Peter Crouch is worth TWO defoes...only if youve got a dry cleaners
craigspur
So why is he a permenant sub?
Et_tu_Pompeii
Not for me, rather spend £4m on James McFadden!
bluedr
Berbatov and robbie keane

£10m is too much isnt it, but that is the kind of price we will need to play for a goalscorer... as much as i have campagined for defoe and thought he would sign - rumours on the pompey pages are that he was 'spotted with 'arry yesterday' - i cant see it now and probably would prefer crouchy to come back, but again we couldnt afford him! other rumours on the pompey pages are that lita is having a medical this week?
pompeyrug
mcfadden is a quality footballer isnt he bluedr - that would be £4m well spent.

We'll never sign Defoe.

The Defoe saga has been going on for so long now... infact we should ban all defoe talk (only joking). Being serious though it does concern me that he is happy to play this role as rolling sub.... I would rather have some like crouch (cant believe I am saying this) that really wants to score goals and play games.
Sachas_Brother
Defoe is much in the same bracket as Yakubu, you know he won't track back and put in the work of a Benjani, but he knows where the goal is

defoe has been playing well for tottenham recently, and i dont think he'll cost £10m, so i have no problems with us signing him, just depends on how much hary wants him and how much he's willing to spend
jbaker
i dont understand why we want him??? he isnt rated highly by many managers - i would rather keep the £10 million, and try one o the new lads
pompeycarpet
I do like defoe but I would prefer a cheaper option like lita or mcfadden. Crouch and defoe have experience but they never amounted to all people hoped they would but in order to get them arry would need to spend way too much money to get them and I dont think either of them would be worth the 10 mill figure that has been mentioned

craigspur- Crouch is the SIZE of two Defoe's. I like Mc Fadden, and Lita... and Crouch and Defoe..but 10mil..cant see it but mainly because i believe Defoe's ego is so big he would not deem it right for someone of his calibre to join us. Crouch too will now see himself above our level of status. However .. Lita i think would jump at the chance and i think work well with Nuge-despite my initial misgivens about his quality that i stated in the summer
plymouth graham
i dont think mcfadden is consistent enough for us, and would be a bai of a risk, i think as everyone says, lita is best choice. and pedersen for matty would be nice too
jbaker
Defoe is he signs (which I hope but doubt) is gonna have to prove himselr to the Fratton crowd ..opinion is already mixed so if he come and play well all power to him.. but if he's now gonna put his heart in to it ,, then he can stay at Spurs and keep the bench warm
