Pompey sign a striker...

...sadly I cannot see him making much of an impact - if any - this season... Sorry, I hope that I did not get your hopes up fellas?

Danijel Subotic has become our first signing of the transfer window, arriving form Swiss club Basel for an undisclosed compensation fee.

The highly rated 18-year-old striker has signed a 3 and a half year contact after impressing during a recent trial.

Harry Redknapp has told the Pompey Site that he is 'one for the future': 'he was recommended to us so we brought him over for a few days' training and he did well.

'We've taken a gamble on him and hopefully he's one for the future.

'We'll just have to see how he goes'.

If he played at all this season, let alone in the next I would be surprised to be honest fellas so although it is good for us to have made our first signing, and again for us to be looking to the future he will not really help us much at the moment will he...

is he good? yes - for an 18 year old. will he play this season? - depends on if benjani or nugent gets injuured (god forbid!). Is he a good signing? I dont see why not, it shows that pompey will have one of the best sides comeing through in a couple of years time - we are putting he money in!

right done a bit of research - turns out that in the first 2 games for the swiss u19s that i could find, he was a substitute (a 2-1 defeat to hungary, and a 1-1 draw with wales)...he isnt EVEN a starting or an u19 side...

The squad number he had for the first game against Hungary was 2. Strange for a striker.

Is it just me, or does HR have a habit of buying 'one for the future' and then never playing them?

That's what he means by 'one for the future'. "You know, I'll play him later ok?".

Sorry Matt we don't need Anelka to 'carry' us. We're a team not a one-man band. I'm not denying his quality we just need a little bit more than someone who'll want to leave come the summer. Back on the subject - I always find it hilarious when we sign these youngsters because don't they realise they have little chance of ever getting in the team? Doesn't matter if you're a 'nearly-there' or a 'one-for-the-future' you just don't get it under Harry.

I keep reading the article and have a problem linking two phrases. 'we are taking a gamble on him' and 'three and a half year contract'. Seems an awfully big gamble, so he must have impressed on trial

Duffy has been with us about 3 or 4 years, roughly about the same amount of apperances hes made

if he is really "one for the future", then he isnt going to impress this year - or next year, and possibly only i the later stages of the following year. that doesnt exactly leave much room on the end of his contract does it? if your going to take a gamble with "one for the future", your not going to offer them a 1 and a half year deal, as thats hardly the future is it?

I like the signing, it sends a message that we want to have a really good youth side and actually produce our own players for a change, im sure he barely cost anything (especially since it doesnt look like he was setting the world ablaze in amateur football) so i dont see anything wrong with the signing

I'm with your Whitestones.. we can bemoan the fact that harry brings these players in and never gives them a chance but (Nugent the exception) we have to trust his judgement... How many players did Arsenal sign and then let go before getting a Fabregas.. We have to accept that not all of these kids will make it or even get a sniff at a first team place but that's the name of the game if you want quality for the future... How many times did Bentley, or Upson or Alliadiare, or anybody else for that matter play for Arsenal before they were shipped out.. and also Harry did bring through Carrick, Lampard, Cole, Ferdinand, Reo-Coker, to name a few.. Not every young signing is gonna make it... but the odd diamond will ...

like with songo'o. do u think is sour grapes with harry? hes sold every other perrin player. and okayish signing, not what we need now, and with the club improving lots, for this guy to play in a few years, he would need to be amazing to get near first team.

Trouble is with any striker we sign, unless they are a young foreigner, who will be paid relatively low wages and be prepared to maybe play every once and a while in a cup game, then we are going to struggle. The likes of Defoe, Crouch etc are going to cost us 10m or so to buy and 60k a week wages and demand a starting place every week. We do need to invest in our youth developement at Pompey, and it chokes me to say it, but Scum have a really good accadamy and look who they have produced through the last couple of seasons. The last lad that came through our ranks was Gary O. Maybe if we can secure the illusive 6th place and get into Europe then we can offer better opportunities and exposure for the bigger players. But whatever we think, Harry's ultimately got the decision on squad and team starters and all the while he delivers (and I don't think we are doing too bad [Boro the exception]) lets get behind our team and support whichever 11 run out in our colours.

i do agree and have always said that if you are one of 'harry's boys' your in for the long haul, songo'o isnt and that is why i can never see him getting a chance no matter how few players we have - hopefully im wrong... but also agree blarmy - we must get behind the team, and in all fairness we do dont we.

responding to blarmy comment, I think we could get defoe for less than 10 mill (i'm thinking 7-8) because ramos has said that he can go (although defoe says he wants to stay, it nevertheless looks better for us getting him)

I think we generally do get behind the team and only complain/moan about those players who do not 'seem to' perform,, if somebody is not pulling their weight do we as supporters/customers do not have the right of reply or should we just sit back and accept whatever drivel is put n front of us... I'm not suggesting for one minute any current Pompey players are drivel but there are a few (Utaka & Kanu especially at the moment who in my opinion do not derserve to wear the shirt.. and if another is chomping at the bit I rather see them play even if they are not quite as good... Players like Anelka, Berbatov, Defoe etc.. are class acts but if they don't feel like it the attitude seems to be that it is tough ... Some current players need to realise they are only at the club for a short whie and should therefore give their all... supporters are'generally at a club for life and therefore should be respected for that and for the hard earned money they shell out week in week out to watch them play... The bottom line to all this is that I'd happily see the Songo'os of this world play in place of the kanu..etc.. but only if they are up for it ...
