Nugent's chance to impress

Dave Nugent took only 5 minutes to make an impact as a substitute for us against Ipswich yesterday, scoring the winning goal that saw us into round 4 - for the next 15 minutes or so after that he was almost unplayable...

His movement, mobility and pace - which is lightening compare to Kanu - caused plenty of problems for the Ipswich defence, and now finally it looks as though Harry Redknapp is prepared to give him his chance after telling sky sports: 'this will do his confidence some good. It is up to him now.

'It has been difficult for him to get into the team, but he will get some games now and we can see what he can do.

'Hopefully he can prove a success'.

He can only prove a success if he is given a chance, something which he has not been given before - with this now almost forced upon Redknapp lets hope that he gets the chance he deserves and can 'prove a success'...

So Harry if it is 'up to him' that surely must mean that a) He ain't going nowhere in the January Sales and b) You are going to give the lad the starts he yearns for... Otherwise what is any different and why make the comment... So on the basis that Kanu has gone to the ACN and Nugent is going to be given his chance are we gonna see a 451 with Benjani replacing Utaka on the right and Nugent the sole striker up front.. or a more conventional 442 with Nuge partnering Benny... also if it is now 'up to him' does that imply that whoever you bring in (striker wise) will not automatically demand a place in the starting line up... As usual 'H' you've told us nothing...

shame really....could get reasonable money for Nugent...I would 100% rather have Lita than Nugent, i guess im in the minority???
CharlieChimes
i just fear that 'arry is saying what 'we want to hear' but i still worry that he wont actually give him the chance? the news that ive had is that the club are torn, some want him sold as we are getting no return on the investment - because he isnt played enough - but others dont want him sold becuase they are worried about the 'damage' it will do our reputation... either way we are screwed... altho i find it quite simple really we either play the fella and find out he is crap - which i dont believe - or we let him go and get ridiculed for a while at wasting some money, but soon get over this and regret his sale... its simple really isnt it...
pompeyrug
...e could be saying that nugent will have the chance to show himself off - at another club, where he is guranteed football...he never mention "at pompey"...but i doubt that...he has a great chance to make it in one of the best clubs in the premiership, only a fool, or a very very unlucky man would mess it up
pompeycarpet
Nugent will give his all. as he does on the pitch, you cant fault the lad, he can only show us if he is good enough when he is selected. Mind you he looked great alongside that bloody carthorse Kanu, who is getting slower and lazier, he must need a holiday in the sun.
Owenspompey
yeah - I reckon Kanu needs a good five or six year break well way from Pompey somewhere.. I know a lot of you fellas can see what I can't but with my eyes all I see is a lazy sid who is just taking us for a ride... All that fuss over the contract... all those threats to and from Harry and what do we get for it .. anyway Back to Nugent ... this lad has bundles of energy and enthusiasm and should be left loose on Derby and Sunderland to see what he can do... We'll still have time to sell him after that if he can't cut it ... but I'm confident he will....

Re Chix's first comment Benjani is too valuable to be risked yesterday. Hew can play up front or right side and we need him fit during ACON. But what a miss by Utaka!!
eastneydave
pompeyrug and i have had quite a bit of chat about Nugent and we both feel the same way, my journo rat mate reckons the pompey Nugent conundrum has got them all enthralled. A few games and goals would do him no harm, but the info i have is that the club are just not sure about him, so we will have to wait and see. Hopefully another poor Kanu performance with Utaka's dreadfully lazy miss yesterday will convince them to keep Nuge and may be add Lita or our long term ( 2 yrs now??) target French U21 target Boukari
russellm
i say this as i feel we need a striker (ruling out Utaka) to match the speed of Benji. Personally really I hope when both Kanu & Utaka comes back they are on the bench and dont get an immeadiate 1st team start. I think the club has abided totally in it's part of the bargain with the Nigerians and Kanu goes to the tournament Nigerian captain and Utaka as a 1st team choice. My own personal point of view is we have been carrying them both for most of the last two months and sacrificed two league places for thatcommitment. I do want them back but they must work to get in the team.
russellm
today whine over, i'm going to bank 14.07p
russellm
With RH's missives becoming more vague and repetitive one begins to wander who is pulling the strings. Lets just play our strongest team and that includes Nugent and Taylor.
007
agree russ - we cannot afford to carry passengers, no matter how much they cost or how much they are 'favoured' by 'arry, progress will never be made if we do that... i keep saying it, but im beginning to dislike kanu because he is offering little or nothing, yet he still keep playing - just think we will have to put up with this next season too, as his new contract will be kicking in soon wont it...
pompeyrug
agree we have to play our best team 007, but as much as i do like matty taylor if i am being totally honest im not sure that he would be included in that now...
pompeyrug
what has happened to Nugent? I thought he'd go on to great things!
merlin
a bit like wright phillips eh merlin? we need to keep matty and nugent for the african nations, unless we want to start with benjani and kranjcar as the only attacking players
jbaker
Taylor is off no question. I'm still not sure about Nugent and I'm not going to get excited just because of one goal against a Championship side. (Neither Utaka or Kanu could score though!) I've made my feelings pretty clear about Nugent and I'd love to be proven wrong and you're all correct - he needs the chance for us to decide if he really is a star or a flop.
stillthewhizz
mttyaint leaving untill someone has come in to replace him! (aparantly) - although how soon that is is questionable...he probably still will leve by the end of the month, but we may yet see him wear a pompey shirt again!
pompeycarpet
i think he will be staying unless harry has already agreed deals for other players and proven players i think the boy has massive potential and hopefully the acn will give him the time he needs to prove himself if not i think he may be off later but definately not now.
pompeyboy
sorry, that was mnat to say "matty 'aint" at the start of my previous post...but he wont leave unless someone else comes...first!
pompeycarpet
exactly my thoughts
pompeyboy
in a perfect world we could keep and play both nuge and matty taylor... but as we know this world isnt perfect...
pompeyrug
but it does a good job trying to be perfect...you know, if you scaled the world down to the same size as a ping pong ball, it would seem perfectly smooth!
pompeycarpet
I think Nugent will have scored a few goals by the time Kanu and Utaka come back - and just like Niko and Matty, the form player will play - I thought he gave a great deal more than Kanu against Ipswich - and now Sol has a better target for his long balls !
StuartM
if matty and niko play well on the left and right respectively, will niko replace utaka on the right, meaning matty can stay on the left?
jbaker
sorry, just realised that would mean we couldnt play 451, because u wud have nugent and benjani in amazing form ;o)
jbaker
stuart - i would rather didnt have to resort to long balls, and watched more videos of how arsnal play - without the ball ever leaving the ground! (well, almost never)
pompeycarpet
jbaker - i think that we could change to 4-4-2 over the next ew weeks, as w simply dont have enough midfielders any more (we lost 3!) - if that works, we could still keep it when the africans get back
pompeycarpet
We are playing teams like Derby & Sunderland that are championship sides in Premiership clothing. Nugent scores against these types of sides & must we give him a go.
storagematt
i think you are right storagematt, it would be a travesty not to play him in those games and training issues or not it is what we bought him for
russellm
I still think that we've two options when considering Nugent and Benjani together..we either stay 451 with Benjani replacing Utaka on the right and Nugent as the sole striker up front.. or a move to the more conventional 442 with Nuge partnering Benny... I can't se us playing any other way that those to formations.. A Taylor Niko swap ain't gonna happen otherwise t would have by now .. and now we have drawn Plymouth Nuge has (as somebody said earlier) championship sides to play in succession Sunderland, Derby & Plymouth... these teams should be bread and butter to Nugent (like Ipswich) If ever there was a time to play him and see how good he is and at the same time build his confidence it is now .. surely
Chix
You'd have thought!
