'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No new faces, but old ones stay

Harry Redknapp has said that no new faces will be arriving before the FA cup game with Ipswich this weekend but 4 familiar faces will still be here...

Redknapp again stressed that he 'will not' have money to spend and will be 'patching up his side with loan or free transfer signings' but no one will arrive before we go to Ipswich on Saturday. He says that he does have some names in mind though.

However our African quartet of Sulley Muntari, Papa Bouba Diop, John Utaka and Kanu will all be available for this game as we have refused their respective countries permission for them to leave early for training camps - they will be heading off next week though.

To be honest, as much as I do want to the win the cup game - along with the cup itself - I would prefer it if they were not available in a way, as we would then have to use several of the players that you would expect us to during the African players absence anyway.

I only hope that none of the mentioned quartet suffer a convenient injury which would rule out the African visit!!!.
007
well if they did then it would rule them out for us too - so there would be no benefit would there... we want to win the cup tie, but i also want to see some of those that will have to step in anyway play their part at the weekend.
pompeyrug
Rug, understand your point of view, but a small injury not lasting one month would be benificial!!
007
Boring Boring Arry, got to what til next week before any activity. What will the rags fill their back pages of speculation with for the next few days!
bluedr
well at least 2 of them (kanu+utaka) have been threatened that they will be dropped if they dont attend the pre-tournament...could this be aharrys plan?
pompeycarpet
Letthem go early! given the vague play of Utaka and Muntari, the "massive tiredness" confirmed by the lack of mobility of Kanu where is the loss, i agree with Rug, let them go, it is where they want to be and we get to put out an 11 man team for this game, something we havent really done since the 1st week of december
russellm
I,ve said before, I'm quite sure Muntari & Diop have 4 bookings each. If they get booked against Ipswich, they will serve the suspensions whilst in Africa. If not, they come back, get booked & then will be suspended. Get them booked, take them off & play those who will here. Kanu can stay in Africa & Utaka need a Leopard up his backside.

So let's see what bertie Vogts is made of then.. as Carpet has pointed out they were told that they would be dropped it they didn't attend... On this basis it means that they are either really *****ed off that Harry has kept them back thus ruining their chances or not that bothered about the tournement anyway... Seems a bit of an odd situation to .. I can't understand why harry just doesn't let them go and have done with it.. all this mucking about must be unsettling for the players concerned and the rest of the squad..
Chix
yep, lets them go - we have to do without them anyway, so why not start from this weekend and give others that deserve a chance this chance... starting with dave bloody nugent, either play the fella or let him go its that simple!
pompeyrug
well put rug, we need nuge n matty getting into the full flow before the get thrown into the bug time in the premier league games
jbaker
i bet pompey fans are hoping utaka and kanu are dropped.probably also hoping ghana crash out in the first round.
kaybee
Not really Kay, we have known about the tournament for a while and we cant blame anyone but ourselves if we do not have cover for the 4 guys going out to Ghana. The tournament means so much to the Africans and they are entitled to see the best players that they have like we have in Europe.
Owenspompey
yep agree we made our bed so we have to lay in it - no one else can be blamed, we know this comes around every 2 years so if we sign the african players this is something we have to live with... tbh im happy for utaka and kanu to be going, utaka has been given too many chances without delivering, at least someone else - even if it is franck songo'o - can get a chance! as for kanu, the fella is fantastic and i like him but his constant selection when he can barely walk let alone anything else is starting to make me resent him... papa bouba diop has been inffective recently, as too has muntari - so, yep they will be missed but at least others will get a chance because 'arry has no other option but to do so, and this could be the best thing for us tbh?
pompeyrug
it appears that dropping utaka made him consider his performances, because i think his last two games for us have been his best since bolton and derby. and yes franck songo'o. oh wait, harry didnt sign him, so he wont play him
jbaker
dont see what all the fuss is about, 4 players are going, only 3 start on a regular basis, and one has been rubbish, Utaka, and has only just starting to show us the quality he has. Only muntari will be heavily missed, as diop can be replaced, so like i said, dont know what the fuss is about. I think teams like everton will be sweating more though, with yakubu goin and yobo, so i dont know why everyone looks at us, and rug is also right, our fault.
PompeyGleamer
diop will be the most heavily missed during the past games we have lost diop has been working so hard to start attacks and tackling. muntari is solid but not as influential as for kanu nugent is probably faster and more lethal
