Hughes staying with Pompey?

There had been a lot of talk that Richard Hughes could move on during this transfer window, but having got his first team place back - and being likely to hold onto this for the foreseeable future - it is looking less likely that he will be going anywhere.

Sheffield United have 'reportedly' been interested in signing him, but with him now back in the team with a number of players going off to the African nations shortly, after the impact he has made since returning to the side it looks as though he will not be going anywhere - for now anyway...

One player that does look like going to Sheff United though is Hughes' former club and international team mate Nigel 'the relegator' Quashie.

Hughes always does a job when he comes, he never lets us down and always does his best for us. He may not be the most gifted of footballers but he keeps things simple and does not over elaborate, not trying things that he cannot do so I have no problems at all with him filling in as he has been, and probably will for a while longer.

Same old, same old, Richard Hughes. Doesn't start the season, ends up coming in in the second half when the troops are low, serves us well and then the cycle starts again.

just not very creative - thats all... but still a great player to have, and he never complains, and he has served the club well

we will keep him until the summer - then he will move on and get the regular football that he deserves... with respect to hughesie - who i have always liked - we wouldnt get alot for him if we sold him now would we, and i doubt he is on a fortune so he wouldnt even be worth selling - not that i would want this anyway.

Yep, this guy is very reliable and should be kept. He provides that little bit of defence midfield that teams need sometimes and plays the kind of role Sean Davis can fulfill. If he does stay longer term then this may mean Pedro Mendes will move on as when the ANC is finished we will have a glut of central midfielders again.

A fine fella; always gives his best when asked. We shouldn't "get rid" but neither should we stand in his way if he asks to leace.

Yes Mr Reliable - always get the call from HR when the top 4 need stopping and does a great job - remember Arsenal on Boxing Day where he protected the back 4 brilliantly. We need players like Hoghsie in the squad.
eastneydave
i don't think he is prem class but he does that break up job very well against the so called big four
russellm
he would be a great signing for a teams lower down the league, who look to break up the play of others - but he would never be brought in when you are playing a lower class oposition, as he just lacks creativity...which is a shame

Dont ever knock Hughsey, every season he comes in and does a job for us. We depend on players like him who know their limitations and does the work without telling us how good he is, like Quashie did, where is he now, languishing in West Ham Reserves. Hughsey you are a star for us mate.
Owenspompey
im not knocking him, i am suggesting that his talkent would actually be put to better use further down the table, as however good a person he is, he is not creative. nd im not suggesting he doesnt do a great job for us - its just he only does it (at his most useful) against 4 teams - and for him, surely he should be looking for morethan just 8 games a season. for us, he is the perfect man...

You need some fire in the belly, no nonsense players & RH is one of them. For what he l;acks in star quality he will make with graft. You sometimes need a team who can mix it. Much rather have him than not.

I love Hughesie for all the same reason as everybody else but don't you think it odd that he's prepared to stay, not play in the reserves and just bide his time waiting for the odd game... I'm not complaining mind as I think he always does good job when he does step in.... Interestingly though when I saw that Sheffield United were interested I wondered if a swap might be in the offing for Rob Hulse...
Chix
you're very keen on hulse arent you Chix? the fella is okay but tbh i dont think he is what we are after...
pompeyrug
I dont think hulse is that good, but he has the assests that I like, english, hard worker, strong, and is an alright finsiher, but I still think that we could do alot better.
