'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Even Campbell can see it...

Papa Bouba Diop has missed some howlers since he arrived at Pompey - I can recall at least 3 golden opportunities with virtually all of them open goals.

Sol Campbell on the other hand scored his first goal of the season against Reading yesterday but even this came after another miss from Bouba Diop - thankfully Campbell followed up.

A horrendous error from Marcus Hahnemann gifted us our opening goal, but even Campbell - as he told The News - cannot believe that Bouba Diop missed the chance to score before he finally bundled the ball over the line: 'A goal is a goal and however they come is nice.

'But I have no idea how Papa missed it in the first place.

'The keeper dropped it, it was an open goal and Papa's managed to head the ball straight at the guy's head.

'But luckily for me, it landed near me and I managed to stick a leg out'.

If Bouba Diop could learn to pass, shot and score golden opportunities he would be deadly...

In all seriousness Bouba Diop has been good since he signed but he has gone off the boil recently - as have many in fairness to him. Maybe his mind is elsewhere? He really does need to brush up on his shooting though, as this has been embarrassing at times and I fear that his shocking misses could sooner or later eventually cost us more than they have so far.

papa is due for laser eye surgery this week, and so will not be playing for portsmouth for about a month, as his eyes will be a little sore...

Something about our midfielders, Davis and O'neil last year, now Papa Smurf has caught it, then there is Mendes this year, Hughes forever, I wouldn't mind betting James has more chance

i taught he has been good in winning you guys balls and he seems to be a very hardworker. he might be one of those lads that score few goals every season but always perform consistantly.
kaybee
ok...i agree kaybee, he has been a hard worker, and he wasnt brought into the side to score goals...but still, he has missed some sitters hasnt he!

Perhaps in the same way we shout 'Quashie' at players who whack it into row Z from 25 yards, we might start taunting players who smash it over from 5 yards with "Papa Bouba Diop'... doesn't quite roll off the tongue in the same way though!
NorthStandDan
its just easier to keep shouting 'quashie' at him :-)

booboo went to the 50 pence heading school with Crouch and the johnny Wilkinson school of kicking

In his club career he averages one goal every ten or so games so he's definatley overdue at Pompey.. the interesting thing is that for his country Senegal he has scored 9 in 38 games .. that's 1 in 4 .. do they have bigger (wider and taller) goals for internationals ... It'll be interesting to see if he scores during the Africans Cup of Nations ...
Chix
He'll be top scorer in the African Nations (we must play it every other year to be difficult) Cup.
