'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Let January bring us a striker!

Pompey need to sign a striker during the transfer window! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from pompeyrug's poll are thoughts that I completely share.

It was no great surprise that a striker and a right winger topped our list of most wanted, these are clearly areas that we do need to strengthen, and have since last summer - without doubt as far as the striker situation goes.

If we get to the end of this month without strengthening these two areas I will not only be surprised but will be bitterly disappointed...

Why the 'goalkeeper' area picked up such a high amount - even though it was still low - I cannot understand? England's no.1 David James isn't too shabby is he, and his deputies Jamie Ashdown and Asmir Begovic are not too bad either are they!

What the poll asked - Where do we most need to strengthen out squad during the sales?

How you voted - Striker 58%, Right midfield/wing 31%, Goalkeeper 4%, Left midfield/wing 3%, Central midfield 2%, Central defence 1%, Right back 1%, Left back 0%

Current Poll - Business can now begin again and areas that are needing looking at can be serviced - hopefully...

We have highlighted the areas that need looking at, and hopefully they will be looked at but how many players will we sign this month - this is what eastneydave wants to know with this - 'how many players will Pompey bring in during the transfer window?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

I'm not sure I do agree with these results. I think a creative central midfield signing could make the greatest difference. Someone who could unlock defences at Fratton Park. If we want new options on right midfield we've got Niko, and Nuge as a new striker option.
NorthStandDan
fully agree northstanddan, we ned more creativity in our midfield, as we just havnt had the ability to break nteams down on our small pitch

i dont know why we dont try matty on the left with niko as a central player! thats where he played for his country in the world cup!
jbaker
Harry might have to try that very soon, Niko needs to be the hole player to be at his most effective, but i cant help thinking Nigeria must be short of a decent centre forward if Kanu is their man!!
Owenspompey
Martins, Anichebe and Yakubu, he must be brilliant to keep them out, or am i missing something?
Owenspompey
...is kanu REALLY there first choice striker?
pompeycarpet
It would appear so, along with Utaka!!

I love the small pitch story we bought Africans to play on a small pitch who turned out to be, well, Africans who are not apparently suitable to play a small pitch. But harry is keeping us on our toes with his press pronouncements. "No one is being sold I cant afford to let anyone go", the following morning "some will be going". The start of the season was "for the first time we have a full squad and will be able to deal with the African departures", now we are treated to.... " well it's a massive problem we will have to try and scrape by , i've only got 14 players" I was also amazed that the "massively tired Kanu" was brought on to replace Benji and instead of Nugent, I had thought that with the impending ACoN Nugent might get a run of games. A cynic might think that once again Harry's blind loyalty to his man is affecting his decision making or the rumor's of a Lita Nugent swap deal are more credible than i had originally suspected.

i often thought that people like wes brown, alan smith and stewart downing must have had something over spineless steve for him to keep pciking them for england when he did... im starting to think kanu might have something over 'arry, as no matter how little he does he still makes it in ahead of other 'fresher' players... hmm interesting, as is the point about nigeria and having better players than kanu - i know he is 'the king of africans' but nigeria are not short of talent are they, im not complaining tho as im glad that he will be gong away for a while... i must clarify, i do like kanu however!
pompeyrug
maybe kanu just plays amazingly well in trainings, and tires himeself for the matches? But i think that whilst harry tried to let us play a tight game, the re-amergance of johnson, and the emergance of kranjcar and davis is great players - and his 5 man midfield, has made our game more suited to passing football - arsnal style, than agressive football - blackburn style, whilst the lack of pace (other than utaka...and benji) has reduced our capacity for long ball football (bolton style)

I want a 35 year old Spanish CF on loan.
Lysimachus
35 year old spanish forward?
pompeyrug
I think I agree with NorthStandDan right at the top of the thread - its a creative player we need (as well as a right winger and a striker) somebody that can play the killer ball to Benji or Utaka to run onto - it's gonna be interesting to see who Harry gets hold of and remember fellas the first person he signs doesn't necessarily mean that that is his priority...
Chix
Defoe or Crouch.
storagematt
Get D'allesandro back and give david nugget a decent run in the side he is just lacking confidence and i think he will be ok but if pompey went out and bought a world class forward then fair enough do it but i just cant see them forking out 10M++ for any body
