Redknapp pleased with festive payout

Over the Christmas period we played 4 games - against Liverpool, Arsenal, Boro and most recently yesterday against Reading. From these 4 games we took 4 points, a return that Harry Redknapp was relatively pleased with.

He told sky sports after the Reading game: 'we have had four games over the period.

'Liverpool away, what can you expect to get there? Arsenal at home, where we took a point and the one disappointment was Middlesbrough.

'We would have been delighted with five points but we will settle for four. We have got 34 points now and it is a great position to be in'.

The defeat to Boro really hurt us, this was almost - as much as you can have such a thing in this league - a 3 point banker, so to have got nothing from it was very poor, even worse than the performance itself... but we have moved on from that, we reacted in the right way against Reading now we have to build on this.

We now have the transfer window to start working in and the welcome break of the FA cup next weekend. This game against Ipswich will not be easy at all but it will be interesting to see who plays and who does not - as this should indicate who will and who wont still have a future with Pompey beyond this month...

Good result yesterday against Reading and hopefully gets us back on track, we just need arry to produce 2 or 3 little gems in the market to stabilise the squad levels. Happy New Year All!

yep the reading win got us back on track, 3pts against boro would have made for a fine festive return - it didnt happen, but as said its a good start to the year, and is hopefully something we can build on.

If we can beat Sunderland and Derby then we can relax and just go for it, i would think that we are more than capable of doing that.
Owenspompey
had we beaten boro, we would have jumped 3 places in the league - its that close in the race for europe this season!!!
pompeycarpet
we really messed up, come the end of the season when u look at games that have cost us, I'll be looking at derby away, spurs home, west ham home and boro home

Its been quite a dodgy little spell over the period really - we played badly at Liverpool and should have done better - as for Middlesbrough - enough said about that the better! At least we can hope we're back on track after the fine result at Reading.

...and liverpool home (missed penalty!)
pompeycarpet
in fact, come to think o it...had that penalty gone in, there would now be 5 teams on 36 points!!!

We were talking about Pompey and missing penalties pre season, i think in the eighties we missed a load on the trot. Maybe we could have a short corner instead.

Better start to the new year but as for this article i don't think Harry is telling the truth, he said in November we needed maximum points in December, what has changed. I think we have been flattering to deceive for a little while now (incl the Reading win) and December saw us play some of the worst football i have seen in two years. Sorry HR you are under a bit pf pressure, but you spent the money so the old stories wont wash, time to fess up forget about the england job and crack on. Looking once again opn the positive side we won at reading when we might have lost and as i said to Rug i am hoping that the ACoN departures will force us to freshen things up a bit.

everyone has a blip in a season, and i mean everyone even the very best... hopefully this little patch just been is our major blip? if that proves the case then i will be very happy come may... of course im not suggesting that we will not lose again this season, but hopefully we will not have as bad a run as this again - well at least playing wise, if we play well and lose you can deal with it, playing badly and also losing is different. it was a disappointing xmas period overall lets be honest, but we've started the new year well - lets re-build on this...

ironicly, at the beggining of the season, i thought we were nailed on to score every penalty that came our way... looking at the side, we have 3 players (taylor, kranjcar and muntari) who are good enough to score every time, then hreiderson, utaka, distin, campbell...etc can all take a strong penalty - what has happened since we beat the penalty masters in asia???

So harry is 'satisfied' with four point but would have liked five... that presumes he tought we#d lose to Liverpool, get a point out of Reading and Arsenal and beat Boro.... Looking at it on that basis he should have been expecting five as a minimum.... Oh well what's done is done and hopefully the poor performances are behind us now and we've another two away matches before we come back to Fratton ... It might help that there's a bit of gap between the Boro and Derby games afterall..

We do sometimes get a point at Liverpool, we normally draw with Arsenal at home, we usually beat Boro & Reading. At best we would get 8 pts. On average expected 6pts but 4pts is pants.
