It has to be 4-4-2 at home 'arry!

It has to be 4-4-2 at home 'arry!

Pompey should deploy a 4-4-2 formation at Fratton! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from storagematt's poll are thoughts that I completely share.

We are conceding very, very few goals at home this season but at the same time we are also scoring very few - most of us put this down to the fact that we will not play 2 strikers up top.

The lone striker has served us well away from home, but it just isn't doing the business on the whole at home, where it is often finding Benjani isolated, and on the whole this is not a job that Kanu can do on his own as he is nowhere near mobile enough.

This 4-5-1 - which is what it is, Harry Redknapp tries to kid us it is a 4-3-3 but lets be honest it is a 4-5-1! - worked well against Arsenal yesterday, but it does not give us enough options up top, Kanu and Benjani linked up well together and Kanu showed what he can do but in all honesty I would still prefer to see Benjani and Dave Nugent start up front together and then if needed see Kanu come on as an impact player from the bench, and I hope this happens against Boro at the weekend - although I doubt it will...

Maybe it is just a case of Redknapp not being happy with the options that he has to play a 4-4-2 at the moment, but surely if he does buy a goalscoring striker in January he will have no option but to revert to this and will be happy to?

What the poll asked - What formation should we play at home?

How you voted - 4-4-2 52%, 4-3-3 23%, 3-5-2 9%, 4-5-1 6%, 4-1-4-1 4%, 4-4-1-1 4%, 3-4-3 2%

Current Poll - Boro come to town at the weekend, this must be a great chance for us to break our baron goalscoring run at home... surely we will not get many better chances than this?

Boro at home would be a game that most of us would be expecting to win, it will not be easy but this is a game that we do need to take all 3 points from, but can we did it? What will happen - this is what pompeyrug wants to know with this - 'Pompey v Boro?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

dya not think 4-4-2 would have left you a bit open? we play the gooners at our place this weekend and I'm guessing Moyes will opt to play Cahill in a five man midfield rather than up for the Yak, but that's the beauty of our formation, sometimes it's hard to tell whether it is 4-4-2, or 4-5-1 and it seems to be working!

Good to see over half opted for 442. I think at times against the big 4, like y'day against Arsenal, 451 worked well. However with very winnable home games coming up against Boro & Derby, we should go for the throat & beat these team out of site. 442.

yep agree toffeetower, that against teams like arsenal the 4-5-1 did work - like matt also agree - but against most others, if not all others we have to go 4-4-2 as we cannot be treating these as games that would be 'a bonus' to get anything from, go for the throat in most other games with 2 up top...

If I'm being ultra picky about Harry, he is just occasionaly a bit too cautious with the formation and tactics. 4-5-1 last night was fair enough against Arsenal, but with the January sales now upon us, it's time to go out and buy a top banana striker and go 4-4-2 at home for the rest of the season....

I'd like to see 4-4-2 against Boro on Saturday - of course we change the game plan against Arsenal, but hopefully next time we can go for it.

Yes lets go for it, the Boro are there for the taking, so lets give it a go, maybe its the time for Nugent to get a go, he looks great in the warm up!!!

At times against the gooners we were playing 4-6-0!

I did suggest we would play 4-6-0 at Anfield & sometimes you need to. If we played 10-0-0 at Old Trafford next month & got a 0-0 we would all take it. As long as we are winning the games in between.

ah but you see we are all wrong, the christmas daimond 433 suits us down to the grouind because we are little pompey and 6 games without scoring at home....we,ve never had it so good

Whatever formation we play aginast Boro (and I agree it should be 442) There needs to be movement up front (irrespective if it's Kanu, Utakak Benjani or Nugent who plays) No movement fron tour front one (or two) limits the midfield and makes it hard for James to find an option when he is looking to clear the ball.

Evans - Right back or right midfield?

Drew Talbot and Adam Buxton are fit but Gareth Evans continues to fill in at right back. Should this change? If so where would it leave the battle between Evans and Carl Baker?
