Redknapp on Pompey's tactic

Harry Redknapp has hit back at Arsene Wenger who was 'critical' of our approach against Arsenal yesterday - saying we were 'too defensive' - telling sky sports that he was pleased with the performance and that had we been completely open we would have been ripped apart - which we would have: 'to keep a clean sheet against Arsenal is always a fantastic performance, they are an outstanding team.

'We worked hard, we closed them down and we looked to play and looked to break.

'I'm delighted with the performance and the result.

'We're not defensive. It's difficult when you can't get the ball. When you haven't got the ball you have to defend that is the logic of football.

'There is not a team in the country which is more difficult to get the ball from than Arsenal.

'You have to be disciplined otherwise you get ripped to pieces. Are we supposed to let them rip us to pieces? Is that what the game is about?

'We came out and worked our socks off. That was a great point, thoroughly deserved'.

Another goalless return at Fratton was disappointing, but to have seen Arsenal also fail to score meant that I was more than happy with the result - I would have happily settled for a 0-0 before the game in all honesty.

I have nothing but respect for Arsenal - they are a fantastic side - and Wenger - who is a great manager - but sorry, the fella had no right to say what he had, he cannot have expected us to have given Arsenal the freedom to have done as they pleased!

We played to a system that we have used all season - whether we like this or not - so it was nothing new, we were the home side but that does not mean that we had to launch an all out assault on them to have won - if we had done that we would have lost, and probably lost heavily...

4-4-2 is the way that I would like us to go at home, but in my opinion Redknapp was spot on with his selection and tactics yesterday and this saw us gain a point when few had much hope we would get even that.

We have to - and I feel sure we will - be a lot more adventurous against Boro this weekend, by that I mean play 2 up top, they are not a patch on Arsenal so we will create more clear cut chances, we just have to make sure we take them.

Its up to any team how they play and its up to the opposing team to break down a side, I dont see a problem with this

I agree that it is up to us to break Pompey down, Wenger was a little unjustified. But, he did give, albeit grudging, praise for the way you guys defended. The thing is that Wenger is totally and utterly committed to the beauty of the game and I find it astounding that the media criticise him for this, he prizes the entertainment for supporters above everything which is very commendable in an age of increasingly dull top flight football (anyone who thinks the PL is the most exciting league in the world really needs to glance Spainwards). Credit to guys, you had a gameplan and executed it very well (with a little help from a couple of defenders we know very well!) Oh and thanks for finally putting a roof on the Milton End, any chance of toilets that aren't constantly flooded next year?

No doubt we defended in hope for at least a point. What did they expect for to attack them & lose 5-1?

wenger likes 'the beautiful game' and altho we have plenty of players that can play great football we are not a patch on arsenal - we had to do what we had to to avoid defeat, we asked questions and arsenal couldn't provide answers... but lets not forget we also asked questions to and came arguably the closest to answer with benji's glorious chance when played through. delighted with a point, hard earnt and well won.

Really enjoyed the game, Arry did what he had to do with the game-plan, we like to play football too, but we're not stupid. Just put a note on the other article commending the Gooner fans - they sang all match and also sang for Tony Adams and Sol.

he played benjani AND kanu from the start, in a formation we have played almost every week - the fact that we barely ever got the ball was a sign of how good arsnal were, but it wasnt for lack of trying. I was a litle disopointed jamo didnt play the ball out quickly more often, but other than that, we DID normally try to run the ball out of the defence...arsnals job to break us down, but i do see where arsne is coming from - it was a little dull! the only consolation for arsnal though is man u ALSO got a draw here, so they didnt loose anypoints in relation to us HERE...

All fair comments fellas and if I said that I wouldn't have settled for a point before the game I'd be lying ( I had us down to lose 3-1 !!) BUT... although the game plan worked I'm not convinced it worked as well as it could have , If we had had a striker that could run we could have won the game in the last ten minutes by hitting Arsenal on the break at they came forward looking for the winner... as I said I'm happy with the point but still think we could have won it if perhaps we'd had a threat on the pitch ... What difference would it have made to swap Kanu for Nugent with ten to go ... Absolutely none .. Kanu could not move at all during this phase of the game.. I'm not knocking Kanu for the sake of it, OI actually thought he played well but he was knackered and useless in the last ten minutes..
