Pompey's run of 6 successive away wins in the league finally came to a halt yesterday when we lost 4-1 to Liverpool at Anfield, a result that was fair even if the scoreline was a touch flattering perhaps?
Harry Redknapp told sky sports news after the game that seeing this run end at Liverpool was always possible and that any points against the 'big 4' are basically bonus points: 'If it was going to end anywhere there is always a possibility it could have ended at Liverpool that's for sure.
'They are a terrific side, but we didn't start well and got sloppy and were punished.
'We came back when we got the goal at half-time and I thought that there might be something in the game for us because Liverpool had gone off the boil.
'But, it has been a great run. Six consecutive away wins, but this is a difficult place to win.
'That's how it goes. The four games against the big four are almost bonus games. If you can pick up results in those games you take that'.
There was no shame in defeat, Liverpool are a fantastic side and if Rafa Benitez could get his side to play consistently well like this week in week out they could still challenge for the title.
The one thing that I did slightly object to though were Redknapp's thoughts that any points against the 'big 4' on our travels are 'bonus points', yep they are tough lets make no doubt about that but if you have that attitude you may as well not even bother playing! But again I just think that this is 'arry in his way doing what he does - we know what he is like.
Our away run has ended, but it should not be all doom and gloom, we have had a fantastic start to the season and we are in a position that I would have easily taken when the season started.
We cannot expect too much, but then again we cannot start expecting too little!
With some new faces in January anything is still possible, and this will remain the case even if we do lose again to Arsenal on Boxing Day - this will be another tough, tough game but if nothing else I just hope that we put in a performance at home, something we have been lacking for some time now...
