'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ref, where's the respect...

Pompey were poor at the weekend and deservingly lost to Spurs, whilst I am not using this as an excuse at all the ref - Martin Atkinson - was poor.

From what Sylvain Distin has told The News it does not appear that it was only several of his decisions that were questionable, Distin feels he also showed a lack of respect and his telling him to 'shut up' has led him to question his 'lack of respect': 'The referee was frustrating. Every time we had contact with them shoulder to shoulder it was a foul for them.

'I told him this once or twice and made my point.

'He didn't like that and didn't respect me.

'It's good to protect the referees, but we are also men on the pitch.

'When you tell someone to shut up you cannot expect a good reaction'.

To be honest I do get feed up with refs being harassed by players, it is uncalled for an unnecessary and as hard as it can be at times - with some more than others! - they do need to be respected, but at the same time they have to show respect to the players too.

Distin feels that he may 'get into trouble' for what he has said, but with no biased view at all I cannot see what he has done wrong, so why should he? All he has said is call it as it was and said that all he wants is to be respected, then in return you will get this from him.

Sylvain is right. All the shoulder to shoulder decisions went against us, it reminded me of refereeing a few years ago when 'little sides' could not touch 'big sides' or it was a foul but never the opposite. That was ripe in 1987/88 when we had players sent off for ridiculous reasons and the Uniteds, Evertons and Liverpools got away with murder!! Well said Sylvain!!

I dont think this is a case of sour grapes, I know what you mean, when ever your team loses, you look at these things, believe me i've done a lot of it this season! I only seen highlights and cant comment on the shoulder to shoulder stuff but if the ref has told any player to shut up then they need to be addressed, they are there officiate, not to act like the all mighty!
Shropshire Yid
take the rough with the smooth, one day (hehe) you get the penalty one day (haha) you don't

The words I told you so ring true on tis frosty Monday morning. Mid season chokers. Thast what I said on Friday and what your lot qualified at the weekend!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahah The best team won - Listen to your manager!!! freaks Clean sheet as welll I bet Robbo will be dining out on that for weeks. Unlike your keeper who can't even conduct a conversation in his native lanuguage 'I am sure the language barrier won't be a problem, if he needs an INTERPRETATOR (hahahaha) we'll let our football do the talking on the pitch - as seen on Sky Sports......... .Losers

At the end of the day it wsa DIstin who he was speaking to. I'd have probably told him to shut the feck up!

We had a bad game & so did the ref. They do have a school headmaster attitude which at times works but not all the time. David Ellery esque.

What on earth is an 'INTERPRETATOR'?! :-S Long-time Spurs fan here, but after 3 years studying in the Anglesea Building on the Anglesea road (obviously!), you develop a liking for Pompey. I think we were worth the win on saturday, although it's a pleasure to see Portsmouth up the top end of the table. I just wish that Spurs were up there with you at the moment, too! Apologies for the numpties who're kicking off... There's one (or a few) in every club... As Shropshire Yid says, if the referee wants respect, telling players to shut up is not really the way to go about it.

there is a difference between 'shoulder to shoulder' and 'shoulder to chest' and 'shoulder to shoulder blade' had the challenges been fair, then free kicks wouldn't have been given! Get over it - you lost to the better team on the day (at last spurs have played well away from home!)
dannispur
why cant more of you spurs fans act like some of the other fellas that have come on vital pompey over the past few days instead of the complete tossers that some of you are? it is those of you that behave in such a way - and there are alot of you that do discredit spurs - that do just that, discredit spurs and basically make so many 'dislike' you... bullers, mate what was the point in half of that rubbish you just spouted?
pompeyrug
dannispur, no one has ever doubted the fact that the better side won - we have openly admited that spurs won and deserved to, we can admit our failings... if you are trying to imply that pompey have not played well away from home this season i think you might want to look over most of our away games, and try checking out the results weve got...
pompeyrug
Blimey, you Spurs fans do love our Pompey site don't you. This isn't about 'getting over it' or otherwise, its a discussion about respect between the player and the ref. In any case, can't we discuss the failings or otherwise of our own team in our own website? As for a 'keeper who can't conduct a conversation in his own language' Bullers, you've lost me? Who is that?
tracyc
i think that he might be talking about the new keeper that 'one day' will buy in january tracy... the ref was terrible on saturday, i could tell that without even watching the game - listening to it and watching some extened highlights showed enough of this. as you rightly say this debate was - infact still is - about the ref, and a lack of respect, how come he can get away with talking to a player like that, but a player cant get away with talking to him like that?
pompeyrug
I'm gald a couple of spurs fans who have more than an onuce of grey matter have been on this post I was really begining to worry about them - Bottom line (and I was at the game) The rest had a really bad day at the office.. Pompey had a really bad day at the office .. Who was at fault for Pompey losing ? Pompey ! Spurs (and all Pompey fans know how hard it is for me to admit this) deserved the three points....
