'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Paper links Pompey with Kuranyi

The 'links' are growing thick and fast now with the January sales just around the corner... the latest name thrown at us by The Mirror is Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi.

I am pretty sure that most of us know who he is, but he is an interesting fella.

He was born in Brazil but his footballing career hopped between Brazil and Panama in his early youth before he went to Germany in his mid teens when he signed for Stuttgart. He apparently holds Brazilian, Panamanian and German citizenship, so there would be no problems with a work permit and with him being a German international he would not be off to the African nations - ever!

Kuranyi has a strike rate of nearly a goal every other game for Schalke, a rate that was just as impressive with Stuttgart before them, but his record of 19 goals in 44 internationals for Germany is outstanding.

The claims are that Ian Broomfield was sent by Harry Redknapp to watch him and he is viewed as 'an emergency arrival in the transfer window' - I am not sure what to make of this statement to be honest...

I do know the fella is top class, but with Schalke playing in the champions league I would not be holding my breath that such an arrival will be happening in the New Year to be honest.

By shear fluke I watched the Frankfurt - Schalke game on Setanta last night. Good game 2-2 with late goals and plenty of fiesty action. Left back Westerman scored both Schalke goals and Kuranyi had good stats but I was not watching him as I would after this article. Used to watch games at Fratton in the late 1970's with a German lad called Gunther who was a Schalke 04 fan.

Time to start the A-Z of possible signings.

oh we've already been doing that for a while matt ;) I agree with you Rug, I just cant see him coming to Pompey since Schalke did make it to the knockout stages of the CL
whitestones
it depends what motivates him more i guess, champions league football now - maybe putting him in 'the shop window' for later - or a move to a club with huge ambition...
pompeyrug
I dont know about that rug, Schalke are not a small club, they will not have to sell him in the future just to keep afloat, so I think that them progressing further in the CL will only make him stay longer
whitestones
Yeah I think I agree Whitestones but he might be a target in the summer depending on how well Pompey and Schalke do this season.. he might have to choose where he wants to play his champions league football !!!
Chix
whitestones, i did not mean it as in schalke were a small club or anything - im not entering a spurs mode of pompey supremacy over everyone else :-) - i just meant it depended how much he wanted to come to the premier league now, or if champions league football this season - and maybe a chance to maybe 'sell himself' to another club meant more...
