Once again David James has refused to call time on his England career, so as long as Fabio Capello wants him in the squad and will give him a fair crack of the whip as he told The News he hopes to carry on: 'if the new manager fancies it, it would be nice to be in the frame'.
For a good 18 months no matter what anyone might try to tell you there was no better keeper in England, so why James was not even in the squad for the vast majority of that time, let alone not the no.1 only Spineless Steve can tell you - now James can tell us of his frustration at those times under the spineless one: 'I was slightly frustrated with being asked to come back in and then being put on the cusp of the squad.
'Scott Carson is a very talented keeper and will be number one for a long time.
'But you look at the way things panned out and ask "why?" I think Scott could have been blooded 12 months ago instead of thrown in against Croatia.
'It was very frustrating being in the England squad under Mr McClaren because I played half a game.
'At the end of the day we went out of the tournament so something wasn't right.
'I was thinking I must have done something wrong somewhere but I was playing well for Portsmouth and training well'.
I think James has basically said everything that all of us have, and had been saying all along…
What Capello will do only he knows, but if James retains his top form then I would like to think that he will not only retain him in the squad, but give him the chance again that he deserves.
James is 37, what of it - but a 'young' 37 though - 37 or 17 if you are the best in your field then you have to be the one that plays, if he remains just that - as he is - then he should be the England no.1 again and let the others put pressure on him, not him having to 'put pressure' on them.
Many will say that carrying on playing for England will 'hinder' his Pompey career; I personally do not buy into that.
